Species loss leads to community closure   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Global extinction of a species is sadly irreversible. At a local scale, however, extinctions may be followed by re-invasion. We here show that this is not necessarily the case and that an ecological community may close its doors for re-invasion of species lost from it. Previous studies of how communities are assembled have shown that there may be rules for that process and that limitations are set to the order by which species are introduced and put together. Instead of focusing on the assembly process we randomly generated simple competitive model communities that were stable and allowed for two to 10 coexisting species. When a randomly selected single species was removed from the community, the cascading species loss was recorded and frequently the resulting community was more than halved. Cascading extinctions have previously been recorded, but we here show that the relative magnitude of the cascade is dependent on community size (and not only trophic structure) and that the reintroduction of the original species lost often is impossible. Hence, species loss does not simply leave a void potentially refilled, but permanently alters the entire community structure and consequently the adaptive landscape for potential re-invaders.  相似文献

Intratracheal instillation of Sephadex beads induced a long-lasting inflammation in the rat lung as seen by an increase in lung weights. Repeated instillation enhanced this reaction and increased lung endothelin-1 content 3.5 times. Budesonide given s.c. abolished these effects and even reduced basal endothelin-1 content by 72%. The tissue content of the sensory neuropeptide neurokinin A were unaffected by both treatments. Endothelin has been proposed to play a part in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma. If it is so, the ability of budesonide to reduce endothelin-1 content could thus be added to the list of beneficial effects of glucocorticosteroids in these conditions.  相似文献

1.  Rats which survived hypoglycemia by insulin, hypoxia by 10% O2, or ischemia by carotid ligation and hypotension to 40 mm Hg, evidenced no changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) uridine. Animals which died soon after the above interventions or as a result of KCl-induced cardiac arrest had elevated CSF uridine concentrations.
2.  Injection of whole blood or the soluble contents of lysed blood cells into the lateral ventricle of rats reduced CSF uridine to less than one-half normal at 24 hrs but values returned to normal 3 days later. Changes in hypoxanthine resembled those of uridine, but were less dramatic, whereas xanthine concentrations were largely unaltered. Intraventricular injection of plasma or saline did not alter CSF uridine.
3.  It seems most likely that low CSF uridine concentrations previously reported in head injury patients may be secondary to the effects of blood cell contents in the cerebrospinal fluid, rather than responses to altered metabolism in neurons or glia cells.

Restriction endonuclease mapping of previously constructed dut plasmids has been carried out using the enzymes PvuI, PvuII and SacI. Various dut plasmids were also tested in the "maxicell" protein-synthesizing system. They all show two protein bands in common, one of Mr 16000 in agreement with the size previously reported for the purified dUTPase subunit (Shlomai and Kornberg, 1978). With the information obtained the structural gene for dUTPase can be assigned to a 950-bp SacI-PvuII fragment of the E. coli genome. Studies, described in the preceding paper, on the overproduction of dUTPase by bacterial strains carrying different dut plasmids strongly suggest that the dut gene is transcribed in the direction from the SacI site towards the PvuII site and that the SacI site is located within the dut control region. The second protein band observed in the "maxicell" experiments has an Mr of 23500. Its identity is unknown but it may represent a precursor of dUTPase or the product of a separate gene located between dut and pyrE.  相似文献

Sympathoadrenal activity was studied in 13 young piglets during hypoxia. The piglets were anaesthetized with chloralose/urethane, tracheostomized, paralyzed with gallamine and artificially ventilated. A femoral artery catheter was inserted and used for blood sampling. The piglets were challenged with 6 min of 6% CO2, 10 min of 12% O2 and 6 min of 6% O2 before and after theophylline (an adenosine receptor antagonist) treatment 20 mg/kg (n = 9) or saline (n = 4). Plasma samples were obtained before, during and after each hypercapnic or hypoxic period and analysed for their content of noradrenaline, adrenaline and neuropeptide Y. Hypercapnia with 6% CO2 and moderate hypoxia with 12% O2 did not lead to any significant increase of either noradrenaline (NA), adrenaline (A) or neuropeptide Y (NPY). However, severe hypoxia with 6% O2 increased the NA level from 30 to 66 nmol/l; the A level from 1 to 28 nmol/l and NPY from 140 to 213 pmol/l. After treatment with theophylline the baseline NA increased from 27 to 40 nmol/l, A rom 1.5 to 4.0 and NPY concentration from 65 to 171 pmol/l. Theophylline moderately enhanced the release of NPY, NA and A during the 12% O2 challenge. However, during the severe hypoxia (6%), the increase of NA (from 49 to 333 nmol/l), A (from 8 to 214 nmol/l) and NPY (from 184 to 385 pmol/l) showed considerably enhancement after the theophylline treatment. The results obtained before and after saline were similar showing that the duration of the experiments per se did not change the baseline levels or the effect of the challenges on NA, A or NPY levels.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The hydration characteristics of phosphatidylcholines and the effect of cholesterol on these were studied with differential thermal analysis and water vapour adsorption experiments. Also the water adsorption of egg phosphatidylethanolamine and the effect of cholesterol on this was studied and compared with corresponding qualities of phosphatidylcholine.The differential thermal analysis study showed that the monohydrates of egg, dipalmitoyl, and dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine tightly bind ~9 molecules of water per phosphatidylcholine molecule. Cholesterol is proved to somewhat increase the water binding of the phospholipids. Cholesterol is also shown to decrease the heat change of the chain melting transition of dioleoyl phosphatidylcholine, but not to abolish it completely.The water adsorption experiments indicate that the hydration of phosphatidylcholines takes place in two steps; a strong initial water binding and a second phase of weak binding. The adsorption isotherm of egg phosphatidylethanolamine is strikingly different from that of egg phosphatidylcholine. Cholesterol is shown, also by this method, to increase the hydration of phospholipids especially that of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine.The results in this study are in good agreement with those presented by many other authors. Starting with the accumulated information of the hydration characteristics of phosphatidylcholines the organization of the bound water around the polar group is discussed and the most probable model is evaluated.  相似文献

Species richness in mammalian herbivores: patterns in the boreal zone   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Latitudinal gradients in species diversity are well established for a number of plant and animal taxa. Both historical and present-day environmental factors have been suggested to be responsible for observed patterns. We tested the hypothesis that current environmental features of the environment (primary productivity and regional landscape structure) may explain the longitudinal variation in species richness of mammalian herbivores in the Holarctic boreal zone. Mammalian herbivore species diversity was strongly correlated with a number of environmental variables measured. We reduced the data set by a principal components analysis (PCA), and found that in the Palearctic, species richness is positively related to warm climate (high temperature sum), the number of hardwood species, and the area of boreal forest. In the Nearctic, species richness increases as the length of the growing season and the number of coniferous tree species increase. Thus indirect measures of primary productivity as well as tree species number may accurately predict species richness in mammalian herbivores. In addition, there seems to be a strong species-area effect at the regional level. The larger and more homogeneous in terms of forest coverage a boreal section is, the more species coexist there.  相似文献

Vascular effects of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and noradrenaline (NA) were studied in six human volunteers. Systemic infusion of human NPY for 40 min (5 pmol X kg-1 X min-1) increased arterial plasma NPY-like immunoreactivity (NPY-LI) from 12 +/- 2 to 356 +/- 30 pM. This concentration caused no systemic cardiovascular effects. The disappearance curve for NPY-LI was biphasic; the slopes of the two phases corresponding to half lives of 4.1 +/- 0.4 and 20 +/- 2 min respectively. Close i.a. infusion of human NPY in the forearm caused a slowly developing and dose dependent decrease in forearm blood flow (FBF) and increase in venous tone with maximal values of 44 +/- 6 and 235 +/- 81% of control respectively at 5 nmol X min-1. The corresponding values for NA (5 nmol X min-1) were 21 +/- 9 and 489 +/- 78% of control. A threshold concentration for a decrease in FBF was obtained at a plasma NPY-LI of 3.7 +/- 0.6 nM. The decrease in FBF caused by NPY was maintained for a much longer period compared to that of NA.  相似文献
