SYNOPSIS. Schizonts were found in the middle and lower third of the small intestine of two calves killed 12 and 14 days after they had been inoculated with pure cultures of oocysts of Eimeria auburnensis. The schizonts ranged from 78 to 250 μ long by 78 to 150 μ wide (mean 92 by 139.9 μ). They were usually located deep in the lamina propria near the muscularis mucosae instead of in the villi where most schizonts of Eimeria bovis are found. The schizonts of E. auburnensis resembled the previously described large microgametocytes of this species but were distinguishable morphologically and by histochemical stains. The microgametocytes were much larger than previously reported; one measured 91 by 287.5 μ.  相似文献

Grey, M., Finkel, Z.V., Pufahl, P.K. & Reid, L.M. 2012: Evolutionary mode of the ostracod, Velatomorpha altilis, at the Joggins Fossil Cliffs UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lethaia, Vol. 45, pp. 615–623. The estuarine ostracod Velatomorpha altilis was analysed for size and shape changes over a 2–3 million‐year interval within a portion of the Joggins Fossil Cliffs World Heritage Site. This represents one of a very few number of studies focused on evolutionary trends within marginal environments and contributes to a growing body of research that attempts to link evolutionary patterns with processes. We measured nearly 400 ostracod specimens and used a quantitative model‐based test to assess mode of evolution. Samples of ostracods were also analysed for their stable oxygen and carbon isotopic compositions in an attempt to supplement paleoenvironmental interpretations. Stasis was the strongly supported model for mode of evolution in both size and shape metrics, lending support to previous hypotheses that organisms from fluctuating, and therefore stressed, environments, should exhibit stasis because they are genetically well adapted to environmental change over geological time‐scales. Stable isotopic compositions indicate samples were diagenetically altered and thus do not preserve a primary signature of paleoenvironmental conditions. Future work should look to other marginal organisms to test whether stasis is indeed a trend in these types of environments. □Carboniferous, estuarine ostracod, environment, evolutionary mode.  相似文献

Acquisition of desiccation–tolerance and germinabilityduring development of Ricinus communis L. seeds.—J. exp.Bot. 36: 1906–1915. Seeds of Ricinus communis L. cv. Hale(castor bean) undergo a transition from desiccation–intoleranceto desiccation–tolerance approximately midway throughtheir development. Tolerance of slow desiccation is gained overonly a few days of development (between 20 and 25 d) and isachieved well before the completion of major developmental events,such as reserve deposition and the onset of normal maturationdrying. A tolerance of very rapid water loss brought about bydrying over silica gel is not acquired by this seed until nearmaturity. Coincident with the acquisition of tolerance to slowdesiccation the seeds gain the capacity to germinate upon subsequentrehydration. Germinability and capacity for normal post–germinativegrowth during the tolerant phase are not fully expressed unlessthe seed is dried at an optimal rate, which is dependent uponthe developmental stage of the seed. Drying presumably actsto terminate developmental processes and to initiate those metabolicprocesses necessary to prepare the seed for germination andgrowth. We present a decadal (1994–2004) record of carbon dioxide flux in a 160‐year‐old black spruce forest/veneer bog complex in central Manitoba, Canada. The ecosystem shifted from a source (+41 g C m−2, 1995) to a sink (−21 g C m−2, 2004) of CO2 over the decade, with an average net carbon balance near zero. Annual mean temperatures increased 1–2° during the period, consistent with the decadal trend across the North American boreal biome. We found that ecosystem carbon exchange responded strongly to air temperature, moisture status, potential evapotranspiration, and summertime solar radiation. The seasonal cycle of ecosystem respiration significantly lagged that of photosynthesis, limited by the rate of soil thaw and the slow drainage of the soil column. Factors acting over long time scales, especially water table depth, strongly influenced the carbon budget on annual time scales. Net uptake was enhanced and respiration inhibited by multiple years of rainfall in excess of evaporative demand. Contrary to expectations, we observed no correlation between longer growing seasons and net uptake, possibly because of offsetting increases in ecosystem respiration. The results indicate that the interactions between soil thaw and water table depth provide critical controls on carbon exchange in boreal forests underlain by peat, on seasonal to decadal time scales, and these factors must be simulated in terrestrial biosphere models to predict response of these regions to future climate.  相似文献

The permeability of plasmodesmata in the nodal complex of branch cells of Chara corallina was examined by measuring both the transnodal electrical resistance and transnodal fluxes of 36CI and 14C-buty-rate. Under normal circumstances, the resistance across the node was low, but increased rapidly in response to metabolic inhibition, pressure gradients across the node or excision of one of the cells. For each of these treatments, there was a substantial reduction in solute transport between the cells. Acidification of the cytoplasm by weak acids or alkalinization by amines did not affect either the electrical resistance or the flux of solutes through the node between whorl cells. The transnodal resistance was significantly higher in older cell pairs, but was unaffected by large transnodal voltage differences or by the passage of action potentials. There was no evidence that short-term increases in cytoplasmic calcium have any effect on plasmodesmatal permeability.  相似文献

A diagenetic case study of phosphatized soft-bodied squids from the lower part of the Oxford Clay of Christian Malford, Wiltshire, has dated mineralization in relation to burial history. Complete squids with mantle tissues were examined under the SEM as uncoated specimens at low KV. A simple stage attachment designed for this purpose is described. Soft-parts are preserved in three dimensions and must therefore have been mineralized prior to decay-induced tissue collapse. Such mineralization occurred near to the anoxic/oxic boundary in the 'soupy' upper layer of organic-rich sediment. In acrobic conditions, phosphates were liberated to pore-water solution from decomposing organic matter and became adsorbed to ferric hydroxides within sediment. The reduction of these ferric hydroxides at the anoxic-oxic interface liberated phosphates to solutions which were conccntrated in the decomposing carcasses of the squids. This mineral concentration was favoured by the development of a high pH reducing environment around the carcass and possibly by complexing with protcolipids liberated by decomposition of animal matter. ▭ Soft-part preservation, phosphatization, SEM techniques, cephatopod.
