Plant endemism in two forests in southern Bahia, Brazil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An important factor in determining species rarity is the geographic distribution of species. Estimates were made of the level of endemism of the flora of two sites in the southern Bahian wet forest zone. Estimates were made for endemism in the Atlantic forest biome and for the much more restricted area of southern Bahia and northern Espi´rito Santo and are derived from analyses of the distributions of the species known from each area. The species checklist for each area is based on identified specimens resulting from intensive collecting in a forest near Serra Grande (40km north of Ilhe´us) and the Una Biological Reserve (40km south of Ilhe´us). Slightly less than half of the species (45.2% at Una and 47.7% at Serra Grande) have widespread distributions and 7.4% at each site are disjunct between the coastal forests and Amazonia. In the Una Reserve, 44.1% of the species are endemic to the coastal forest and 28.1% endemic to southern Bahia and northern Espi´rito Santo. At Serra Grande, 41.6% of the species are endemic to the coastal forest and 26.5% endemic to southern Bahia and northern Espi´rito Santo.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. Proteins of the membrane skeleton of Euglena gracilis were extensively phosphorylated in vivo and in vitro after incubation with [32P]-orthophosphate or γ-[32P] ATP. Endogenous protein threonine/serine activity phosphorylated the major membrane skeletal proteins (articulins) and the putative integral membrane protein (IP39) anchor for articulins. The latter was also the major target for endogenous protein tyrosine kinase activity. A cytoplasmic domain of IP39 was specifically phosphorylated, and removal of this domain with papain eliminated the radiolabeled phosphoamino acids and eliminated or radically shifted the PI of the multiple isoforms of IP39. In gel kinase assays IP39 autophosphorylated and a 25 kDa protein which does not autophosphorylate was identified as a threonine/serine (casein) kinase. Plasma membranes from the membrane skeletal protein complex contained threonine/serine (casein) kinase activity, and cross-linking experiments suggested that IP39 was the likely source for this membrane activity. pH optima, cation requirements and heparin sensitivity of the detergent solubilized membrane activity were determined. Together these results suggest that protein kinases may be important modulators of protein assembly and function of the membrane skeleton of these protistan cells.  相似文献

The importation of infected hosts and the arrival of windborne infected Culicoides (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) were considered unlikely mechanisms for bluetongue virus (BTV) incursion into a BTV‐free area during the recent BTV serotype 8 (BTV‐8) epidemic in northern Europe. Therefore, alternative mechanisms need to be considered. Air, sea and land transport networks continue to expand, and an important consequence of this is vector‐borne pathogen importation. One important aspect of bluetongue (BT) epidemiology not yet addressed is the potential movement of infected Culicoides via transport and trade networks. Therefore, a risk assessment model was constructed to assess the probability of a BTV outbreak as a consequence of the introduction of Culicoides via these networks. The model was applied to calculate the risk for a BTV‐8 epidemic in Spain in 2007 caused by the introduction of Culicoides from affected northern European countries. The mean weighted annual risk for an outbreak caused by transportation of a single vector from an affected northern European country varied from 1.8 × 10?7 to 3.0 × 10?13, with the highest risks associated with Culicoides imported from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany and France. For this mechanism to pose a significant risk to BTV‐free countries, a large number of vectors would have to be transported.  相似文献

A G protein-coupled natriuretic peptide-guanylyl cyclase receptor-B (NPR-B) located in plasma membranes from bovine tracheal smooth muscle shows complex kinetics and regulation. NPR-B was activated by natriuretic peptides (CNP-53 > ANP-28) at the ligand extracellular domain, stimulated by Gq-protein activators, such as mastoparan, and inhibited by Gi-sensitive chloride, interacting at the juxtamembrane domain. The kinase homology domain was evaluated by the ATP inhibition of Mn2+-activated NPR-B, which was partially reversed by mastoparan. The catalytic domain was studied by kinetics of Mn2+/Mg2+ and GTP, and the catalytic effect with GTP analogues with modifications of the /γ phosphates and ribose moieties. Most NPR-B biochemical properties remained after detergent solubilization but the mastoparan activation and chloride inhibition of NPR-B disappeared. Our results indicate that NPR-B is a highly regulated nano-machinery with domains acting at cross-talk points with other signal transducing cascades initiated by G protein-coupled receptors and affected by intracellular ligands such as chloride, Mn2+, Mg2+, ATP, and GTP.  相似文献

Acquiring sufficient nutrients is particularly important for insects that are unable to synthesize certain nutrient types de novo, as is the case for numerous parasitoid species that do not synthesize lipids. The lipid reserves of parasitoids are acquired from a single host during larval development. This imposes constraints on the quantity and quality of available lipids. In the present study, the lipid dynamics throughout the trophic cascade are investigated by measuring lipogenic ability, modifications in fatty acid composition and host exploitation efficiency in species at different trophic positions within the community of parasitoids associated with the gall wasp Diplolepis rosae L. (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae). The results obtained show that lipid levels remain stable or decline after feeding in all species, indicating that none of the wasps synthesize lipids. Fatty acid composition is highly similar between the gall wasp, parasitoid and hyperparasitoid species, with the exception of the parasitoid Orthopelma mediator Thunberg (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). The divergence of fatty acid composition in O. mediator suggests that this species is able to modify its fatty acid composition after the consumption of host lipids. The efficiency of exploitation of host resource, in terms of dry body mass acquired, varies among the species (41–70%), although it is high overall compared with the efficiencies reported in other animals. Hence, for parasitoid wasps that lack lipid synthesis capabilities, the efficiency of host exploitation is high and fatty acids are consumed directly from the host without modification, leading to stable fatty acid compositions throughout the trophic cascade.  相似文献

ABSTRACT A protein kinase (PK) was partially purified from NaCl extracts of the cell surface complex of Euglena using DEAE-cellulose chromatography. Tubulins extracted either from flagella or from the cell surface complexes of Euglena were readily phosphorylated when incubated with [γ-32P]-ATP and the PK. Protein kinase activity was augmented with 5 mM Mn2+ or Mg2 and was inhibited or had greatly reduced activity with 5 mM Ca2+, Co2-, Cu2+ or Zn2+. Incorporation was much lower when [γ-32P]-GTP was the phosphate donor. Serine and threonine were the major radiolabeled phosphoamino acids in tubulins; label was also found in phosphotyrosine. Alpha-tubulin solubilized from flagella was a relatively poor substrate for the PK, but a Euglena α-tubulin cDNA overexpressed as a Trx-fusion protein incorporated [γ-32P]-ATP into serine and threonine when incubated with cell surface extracts. Alpha- and β-tubulins from cell surface complexes were equally good substrates for the PK. No incorporation was observed in intact microtubules either from the cell surface complex or from isolated flagella. In-gel assays identified a polypeptide of about 30 kDa that phosphorylated tubulins in extracts of both flagella and the cell surface complexes, and dephosphorylated casein was a competitive substrate for the partially purified kinase. In vivo incubation with [32P]-orthophosphate produced numerous radiolabeled bands in acrylamide gels of NaCl extracts of the cell surface complex, but none of these bands could be positively related to tubulins extracted from surface complex microtubules.  相似文献

Abstract:  This paper describes the diversity, taphonomy and palaeoecology of angiosperm leaves that dominate a palaeoflora of Cretaceous (Cenomanian–Coniacian) age from the Mata Amarilla Formation in the Austral Basin, south-west Patagonia, Argentina. Twelve morphotypes of angiosperm leaves are recognized based on foliar morphotype analysis of more than 500 specimens. These were divided into six morphological groups based on major architectural patterns. The relative dominance of these morphotypes, mode of preservation and relationship with sedimentary facies were evaluated from two levels within the formation. This analysis identified two different plant palaeocommunities. The lower, María Elena, level (MEL) was deposited in a marine coastal area on a subaerial delta plain; the dominant angiosperm morphotypes preserved in it are group 1 (MA100) and group 2 (MA101, 102); morphotypes MA109 and 110 are scarce but exclusive to this level. The upper, Mata Amarilla, level (MAL), accumulated inland in flood-plain environments; the most abundant angiosperm morphotypes are groups 3 (MA103–105), 4 (MA106) and 1 (MA100); morphotypes MA103–105 and 108 are exclusive to this level. Comparisons with other floras of similar age from Antarctica, Australia and New Zealand indicate that the Mata Amarilla flora has a slightly higher morphological diversity of angiosperm leaves, providing the first evidence for an angiosperm-dominated early Late Cretaceous macroflora in south-west Gondwana.  相似文献

Background

Chronic venous leg ulcers (VLUs) are a common problem in clinical practice and available treatments are not satisfactory. The use of adjuvant therapies in combination with lower limb compression may lead to improved healing rates. Chronic wounds are candidates for new strategies in the emergent field of regenerative medicine. Bone marrow–derived cells (BMDCs) contain cells and secrete cytokines known to participate in wound healing. Thus, BMDC therapy seems a logical strategy for the treatment of chronic wounds. Our objective was to evaluate feasibility, safety and initial clinical outcome of autologous BMDC therapy associated with standard treatment in patients with VLUs.

Methods

We conducted an open-label, single-arm, prospective pilot clinical trial in four patients with six chronic VLUs. The study protocol was approved by the institutional and national review boards and ethics committees. Bone marrow was harvest, processed and then administered by multiple injections into the ulcers. All patients received standard treatment and non-healing characteristics of the VLUs were confirmed at study entry.

Results

Ulcer size and wound pain evaluated 12 months after BMDC treatment were significantly reduced (P < 0.05). BMDC treatment was safe and well tolerated in long-term follow-up.

Discussion

Despite the low number of patients studied, our results showed that autologous BMDC treatment could be a useful, feasible and safe procedure to enhance ulcer healing. However, randomized controlled trials with more patients are needed to address this question and translate this approach into clinical practice.  相似文献
