An iron oxidizing strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been grown on solid medium using purified agar, carrageenan (Type 1) and agarose. This strain produces isolated and transferable colonies after 7 d incubation. Growth (increase in viable cells) by the direct plating method has been followed in relation to iron oxidation. The assessment of population structure is a valuable tool for studying the ecology of endangered species and drafting conservation strategies. As we enhance our understanding about the structuring of natural populations, it becomes important that we also understand the processes behind these patterns. However, there are few rigorous assessments of the influence of environmental factors on genetic patterns in mobile marine species. Given their dispersal capabilities and localized habitat preferences, coastal cetaceans are adequate study species for evaluating environmental effects on marine population structure. The franciscana dolphin, a rare coastal cetacean endemic to the Western South Atlantic, was studied to examine these issues. We analysed genetic data from the mitochondrial DNA and 12 microsatellite markers for 275 franciscana samples utilizing frequency‐based, maximum‐likelihood and Bayesian algorithms to assess population structure and migration patterns. This information was combined with 10 years of remote sensing environmental data (chlorophyll concentration, water turbidity and surface temperature). Our analyses show the occurrence of genetically isolated populations within Argentina, in areas that are environmentally distinct. Combined evidence of genetic and environmental structure suggests that isolation by distance and a process here termed isolation by environmental distance can explain the observed correlations. Our approach elucidated important ecological and conservation aspects of franciscana dolphins, and has the potential to increase our understanding of ecological processes influencing genetic patterns in other marine species. 相似文献

The rate of hydrolysis of fats during germination of peanuts decreased with the increase in the concentration of aflatoxins. Free-reducing sugars increased up to 96 h of germination, and thereafter their concentrations remained more or less constant. However, the rate of formation of free-reducing sugars decreased with increase in the concentration of aflatoxins. At all the stages of germination the rate of formation of sucrose decreased with increase in the concentration of aflatoxins. The aflatoxins stimulated the fixation of nitrogen during the preflowering stage, leading to an increase in the concentrations of soluble nitrogen in roots and protein in shoots: the maximum amount of total nitrogen fixed and that excreted into the soil was at a concentration of 2.5 μg/ml aflatoxins. 相似文献

A fractal analysis is presented for the binding and dissociation of different heart-related compounds in solution to receptors immobilized on biosensor surfaces. The data analyzed include LCAT (lecithin cholesterol acyl transferase) concentrations in solution to egg white apoA-I rHDL immobilized on a biosensor chip surface (), native, mildly oxidized, and strongly oxidized LDL in solution to a heparin-modified Au-surface of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensor (), and TRITC-labeled HDL in solution to a bare optical fiber surface (). Single-and dual-fractal models were used to fit the data. Values of the binding and the dissociation rate coefficient(s), affinity values, and the fractal dimensions were obtained from the regression analysis provided by Corel Quattro Pro 8.0 (). The binding rate coefficients are quite sensitive to the degree of heterogeneity on the sensor chip surface. Predictive equations are developed for the binding rate coefficient as a function of the degree of heterogeneity present on the sensor chip surface and on the LCAT concentration in solution and for the affinity as a function of the ratio of fractal dimensions present in the binding and the dissociation phases. The analysis presented provided physical insights into these analyte-receptor reactions occurring on different biosensor surfaces. 相似文献
