The efficiency of the conversion of photosynthetically activeradiation by C3 plants falls off with increasing intensity.Hypothesis: an increase in the productivity of direct solarenergy will be achieved if, by redistribution, it is interceptedat a more uniform and lower intensity by a greater proportionof the leaf area of a crop. A model is developed which usesestimates of the proportions of clear and overcast conditionsfrom site records of solar radiation to calculate the resultantphotosynthetic productivity. The amounts of diffuse light anddirect light are estimated for clear conditions. The model predictsthat redistributing direct solar radiation over twice the leafarea at half the intensity would give an increase of 22% inannual productivity. The model gives reasonable values for theproductivity reductions reported for two shading regimes. Tomato plants were grown for 21 d in three cabinets under regimesthat differed from each other only in the distribution of PARenergy over the daily photoperiod: (a) 103 W m–2 for halfthe photoperiod followed by 13 W m–2, (b) 13 W m–2followed by 103 W m–2 and (c) 58 W m–2 for the wholephotoperiod. The dry matter increase of plants under the uniformregime was 33% greater than the average of those in the twoasymmetric regimes. It is suggested that, in protected cultivation, screens of partiallyreflective material could be used to redistribute solar radiationfrom leaves exposed to high intensities on to shaded leavesand so raise the photosynthetic efficiency. Assuming an absorptionof direct light by the screens of 0.10, the increase in productivityis estimated to be 17%. An analysis is made of a peristaltic model of phloem translocationIt is postulated that the periodic action of contractile orbending organelles drive a longitudinal flow of solution withintubules which connect sieve pores in successive sieve plates Plausible values are assumed for the velocity of propagationof the contraction wave, the frequency, the amplitude, and theviscosity of the solution and its concentration. Using relationswhich describe peristaltic flow, predictions are made for thevalues of parameters such as the velocity of solution, the drivingpressure, and rate of energy dissipation. These predicted valuesare seen to be reasonable when compared with the known propertiesof other biological contractile systems. Thus the model is quantitativelyacceptable.  相似文献

Magenta Petrels Pterodroma magentae were caught at light-attraction stations on southwest Chatham Island, New Zealand, and most were fitted with transmitters. Of 52 captured since 1993, 71% were males, and all 36 tracked adequately proved to be non-breeders in the breeding season of capture. Our data indicated no sex bias in their probability of being captured at lights. Males provided 86% of trackings, and 87% of trackings of birds flying over the breeding area were males. Males landed 118 times; females 13 times. Only males were found on the ground, by night and day, apparently unassociated with burrows (three with and ten without transmitters), but subsequently digging burrows ( n  = 8). Of 19 birds banded as fledglings up to 2000, males were first recaptured nearing 4 years old (at lights and on the ground) and a female nearing 6 years old (in burrow). Among 37 fledglings, the sex ratio was even. Nine tracked males occupied burrows, as did two females, but the latter were older recaptures (10+ and 25+ years old). It appears that only males claimed existing, or dug new, burrows. They then attracted a mate to the burrow by means unknown, but from among females frequenting an inshore courtship area near the colony, or occasionally flying over the colony, at night. Females established in burrows, but then losing their mate, were able to re-mate there, by calling from near the burrow or by attracting a mate in flight or from the postulated inshore courtship area. Both sexes sometimes took years to pair or re-mate, possibly reflecting the dearth of available mates.  相似文献

Electrical and tracer techniques were used to investigate the movement of Na+, K+ and Cl? through discs of a range of thicknesses cut from the root tissue of sugar beet, Beta vulgaris L. cv. Amono. At low external concentration the electrical resistance across a discs is less than that of an equivalent volume of solution. This does not appear to be due to a low resistance symplastic pathway but rather, to an enhanced concentration of cation in the apoplast. The resistance is proportional to the thickness of tissue. Although measurement of diffusion potential gives about 25 mV difference across the disc for a ten-fold change in cation concentration, there is little discrimination between K+ and Na+. The observed tracer kinetics of 86Rb through the disc are consistent with those of diffusion, with a coefficient of diffusion, D, of 0.19 × 10?9 m2 s?1 and a tissue partition coefficient, k, of 0.27 (or of 2.7 if referred to the cell wall phase only). 36Cl gives a similar value for D, but has a k reduced by a factor of 3.3, a result that is consistent with the diffusion potential observation. However, a much larger discrimination would have been expected from the chemically measured cation exchange capacity.  相似文献

Data from a field experiment carried out on growth of lettuce,onion, and red beet were used: (a) to fit logistic, Gompertz,expolinear and ‘Scaife and Jones’ (Journal of AgriculturalScience, Cambridge86 : 83–91, 1976) functions using time,day-degrees and effective day-degrees; and (b) to test a mechanistically-basedmodel that combines the effects of potentially limiting variables,such as temperature and light, and allows for plant zone areain light interception (Aikman and Benjamin,Annals of Botany73 : 185–194, 1994). The use of day-degrees and effective day-degrees instead oftime, in general, improved the fit and gave a better estimateof growth parameters. The best fit was obtained by the Gompertzfunction for lettuce, and by the expolinear function for redbeet and for onion. The expolinear function seemed the mostreliable function in estimating the early relative growth ratewhich is the crucial value in all the mechanistic models. Thezone area model showed very good simulations for lettuce andred beet, but it requires a modification for canopy senescencein onion. A field experiment was carried out to analyse the growth oflettuce, onion and red beet in terms of: (a) canopy architecture,radiation interception and absorption; (b) efficiency of conversionof absorbed radiation into biomass; and (c) dry matter partitioning.Growth analysis, total solar radiation interception, PAR interceptionand absorption by the crop canopy, ground cover, maintenancerespiration of onion bulbs and red beet storage roots were measured.Models for different leaf angle distribution and ground coverwere used to simulate light transmission by the crop canopy. The three crops are shown to have contrasting growth patternsfrom both a morphological and a physiological point of view.Lettuce showed very high light interception and growth afterthe early growth stages but, throughout the growth cycle, thisleafy crop showed the lowest radiation use efficiency due tothe respirational cost of the high leaf area. Onion showed alower early relative growth rate than lettuce and red beet.This was due partly to the low light interception per unit leafarea in the later stages of growth and partly to the low initialradiation use efficiency compared with the other two crops.On the other hand, thanks to more uniform distribution of theradiation inside the canopy, to the earlier termination of leafdevelopment and to the very low level of bulb respiration, onionshowed high radiation use efficiency and was able to producea large amount of dry matter. Red beet leaf posture and canopystructure resulted in high light interception and absorption.Its radiation use efficiency was lower than that of onion, partlyperhaps because of the more adverse distribution of the interceptedradiation fluxes within the canopy and partly because of thehigh respiration cost of a continuous dry-matter allocationto the leaves. However, this crop can accumulate a very largeamount of dry matter as leaf blade development and storage rootgrowth can both continue almost indefinitely, providing continuouslyavailable sinks. Ground cover gave a good estimate of the PAR interception onlyat low values of light interception but, in general, it underestimatedPAR interception in all three crops. Ratios between attenuationcoefficients established by considering PAR or total solar radiationand LAI or ground cover were calculated. A Model for Growth and Self-thinning in Even-aged Monocultures of Plants   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
A theoretical model is derived from simple postulates to describethe rates of growth and mortality of plants in populations ofdifferent densities. The growth rate is described by a modificationof the logistic growth differential equation in which the increasein weight of an individual plant depends on its area, si ratherthan on its weight. The effective area for growth of a plantis reduced by an empirical function, f(si) with two terms: oneterm expresses the constraint imposed upon the increasing totalarea of plants by the limited physical area of the plot; theother term allows for a competitive advantage or disadvantagefor plants of varying sizes. Depending on the value of the parametercontrolling the relative competitive advantage term, intrinsicvariability between plants can be amplified or suppressed. Anindividual plant dies if the f(si) results in a negative growthrate for that plant. Computer simulations of the growth andsurvival of plants at different population densities were run.The results exhibit characteristics that appear realistic uponcomparison with published data: a survival of the fittest occurringduring thinning; a line of slope close to –3/2 boundingthe graphs of log weight versus log density; and the occurrenceof bimodality, associated with subsequent mortality, on frequencydistribution of log weight. computer logistic model, growth differential equation, density-effect, competition, mortality, self-thinning  相似文献

To test for the existence of an apoplastic unloading/reloadingstep in phloem translocation, as envisaged in the relay hypothesisof phloem transport, isotopic trapping experiments were performedon Ricinus comunis L. var. Gibsonii. A CO2 buffer system wasused to supply 14CO2 at constant partial pressure and constantspecific activity to a photosynthesizing leaf. The subtendinginternode was perfused with solutions of sugars or of mannitoland transolation of 14C past the perfused zone was monitoredby the collection of phloem exudate. Trapping of activity inthe perfusate was enhanced by the presence of sugars as wouldbe expected with an unloading/reloading process. However, therewas no evidence that introduction of the unlabelled sugars tothe apoplast also reduced activity in the phloem exudate. Moreover,the rate of loss of activity to the perfusing solutions representedonly 1% of the rate of appearance in the exudation. It is suggestedthat the trapping results may reflect an unloading of tracerfrom the phloem associated with a subsequent reloading by adjacenttissues rather than by the sieve tubes. To investigate the length of sieve tube continuity in Ricinus,a horizontal incision was made to the bark and the rate of exudationof phloem sap was monitored. Successive circumferential cutswere made above the exuding incision and progressively closerto it. In general, a girdling incision produced a transientdecrease in the rate of change of exudation rate (i.e. the firstderivative became more negative/less positive). The magnitudeof this response rose with exudation rate and fell with thedistance at which a girdling cut was made. Fitting an appropriatemodel yielded an estimate for contributory length of 69 ±6 cm. This was comparable with the distance of the initial tangentialincision from the stem apex, suggesting a continuous sieve tubesystem in Ricinus. A similar investigation on the petiole yieldedan estimate of around 7.0 cm. This lower estimate for contributorylength is believed to reflect a rapid sealing process that limitsthe distance of propagation of turgor-release rather than alimited length of sieve tube continuity. The results of this investigation do not support the relay hypothesisof phloem transport. Rather they suggest a continuous sievetube system which has a distributed capacity to load and unloadsolutes, and which may exhibit a sealing response when injured. Various authors have suggested that phloem contains structuralcomponents that provide interfaces at which surface movementcould be the mechanism of transport along phloem. Although surfaceflow at a liquid/gas interface or a liquid/liquid interfacecould be a sufficiently rapid process provided both media canflow with the interface, it is demonstrated that a liquid/solidinterface imposes an excessive viscous resistance. A calculated velocity for surface flow along stationary fibrilsof P-protein under a gradient of surface energy is much lowerthan observed translocation velocities. Moving fibrils wouldcarry little sucrose by the calculated absorption excess ofthe interface layer; moreover free fibrils would tend to movetowards the region of higher sucrose concentration. Similar arguments discount the plasmalemma and the tonoplastas suitable structures. A predicted value of attraction to theendoplasmic reticulum would not provide enough energy for anadequate driving force. Surface diffusion at a liquid/liquidor liquid/solid interface is not a sufficiently rapid process. The sole possibility speculatively requires that there be ahigh affinity between sucrose, or some other molecule, and thesurface of the endoplasmic reticulum, and further that it befree to flow from element to element with a continuous rateof supply of membrane components at a source, of their removalat a sink, and of their recirculation in some way. Since sucha system seems implausible, it is concluded that neither surfaceflow nor surface diffusion can be the mechanism for transportalong phloem.  相似文献

11CO2 was offered to leaves of sunflower, corn and ryegrassand 13N2 to root nodules of alfalfa and alder. Movement of thetracers out of the feed region was monitored along stems orpetioles using geiger tubes. Fluctuations in radioactivity werenot detected as statistically significant from random tracerdecay in the ‘background’ section of the time-activityprofiles before mass-flow commenced, but became highly significantin the mass-flow sections. These pulses of radioactivity couldbe followed from one detector to the next over 1–3 cmand were analysed for periodicity by cross-correlation and auto-correlationcomputer programmes. Periodicity was only rarely detected in11C runs, but was evident in many 13N experiments. Speed ofpulse movement (microfronts) were measured, both visually andby computer cross-correlations, and compared with rates foundby the ‘moving intercept’ of mass flow. Microfrontspeeds were faster. Speeds of 11C movement were comparable withthose reported for phloem, but 13N movements were often muchhigher, suggesting xylem movements. Fine structure pulses indicatethat movements of 11C photosynthate or 13N compounds are rapid,erratic and far more complex than expected by a simple Münchpressure flow mechanism.
