Different Spanish unifloral honeys (eucalyptus, sunflower, rosemary, thyme, lavender, citrus, anise, quercus, and lemon blossom) and one multifloral honey were studied by Free-Choice Profiling (FCP) analysis. Generalized Procrustes Analysis (GPA) applied to the FCP data allowed discrimination between samples and provided information on the attributes responsible for the differences observed. The honeys had significantly different sensory characteristics. Textural attributes were the predominant factor in discriminating between samples, and appearance (color included) was also correlated with GPA dimensions to a lesser extent.  相似文献

Recognition and acceptance of a suitable host plant by phytophagous insects requires the integration of visual, physical and chemical cues. The present study investigates the host cues that a specialist insect integrates to optimize oviposition decisions and whether these cues are weighted in a specific way. The study also determines whether the tomato fruit borer Neoleucinodes elegantalis (Guenée) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), an important pest on Solanaceae in Brazil, shows a preference for oviposition sites that differ in physical and/or chemical cues. When styrofoam balls are provided as artificial fruits, N. elegantalis deposit significantly more eggs on rough artificial fruits than on smooth ones. Hexane fruit extracts applied to the artificial fruits stimulate female oviposition strongly. Physical and chemical cues also affect the oviposition of females when offered together. Furthermore, certain parts of the artificial fruits are prefered, irrespective of the presence of chemical cues. Both physical and chemical cues affect oviposition decisions; hence, the fruit borer relies on cues of different sensory modalities.  相似文献

Seed ontogeny of Adesmia bicolor and Adesmia latifolia was analysed using light microscopy and standard histological techniques. Fertilization was porogamic. Linear proembryonal tetrads were observed in A. bicolor. The robust elongated suspensors possessed specialized basal cells. The nucellar epidermis became endothelial. The free‐nuclear endosperm produced a micropylar, filamentous and ephemeral haustorium and a lateral sac‐like haustorium at the funicular side. The cellular endosperm was initiated from the micropylar zone after the cordiform embryo stage. It mostly disintegrated in mature seeds. The sclerified bilayered testa was derived from the outer ovular integument. Different astrosclereid arrangements beyond the lens in both Adesmia species may be related to the different habitats of the two species. The occurrence of both micropylar and lateral nuclear endosperm haustoria has so far not been reported in Fabaceae and is the most distinctive embryological character of Adesmieae. The taxonomic value of the mostly uniform morphology of the suspensor in the Adesmia species studied could also be relevant. The nature of seed endothelia in many Fabaceae requires accurate redetermination prior to taxonomic use. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 158 , 602–612.  相似文献

Lepidopteran male mating success is recognized to be directly related to physical and behavioural traits such as ability, vigour, activity and persistence in courtship. In the tomato fruit borer Neoleucinodes elegantalis Guenée, the mating system is known to be monogamic and therefore males' sexual investment is apparently low. The hypothesis that recently mated males have a remating probability equal to that of virgin males is tested. The impact of body size in remating success and the cost of remating are also analyzed. Mated males show as much propensity to remate as naïve ones. Copula duration and the time taken to copulate are similar in mated and virgin males. However, spermatophore size is not related to male size. The results suggest the ability of N. elegantalis males to remate within 24 h between mating events and their propensity to remate are not affected by copula investment. © 2013 The Royal Entomological Society  相似文献

The sequence of the tyrosinase (Tyr) gene coding tracts has been obtained for the gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). The five exons of the gene were sequenced in three gorillas and in a normally pigmented human. The tyrosinase gene has been found to be a very conserved locus with a very low substitution rate. Some nucleotide and amino acid differences were found between the gorilla and human tyrosinase coding sequences. One of the gorillas included in the study is the only known case of albinism in a gorilla (‘Snowflake’). Mutations of the TYR gene lead to Oculocutaneous Albinism type 1 (OCA1), the most common type of albinism in humans (OMIM accession number 203100). The TYR gene encodes the tyrosinase enzyme (E.C. 1.14.18.1), whose activity was found to be completely lacking in ‘Snowflake’, indicating that a mutation in the Tyr gene is the likely cause of his albinism. Nonetheless, no nucleotide changes were detected that could account for the lack of Tyr product or tyrosinase activity in Snowflake, and explanations of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

A preliminary palynological characterization of Spanish thyme honeys   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Pollen was analysed in 25 thyme honey samples from Spain. The honey samples were provided by professional beekeepers, and pollen was obtained by centrifugation. A minimum of 8% of Thymus sp. pollen is considered sufficient to typify a honey as unifloral when considering pollen grains from anemophilous and nectarless plants. The quantitative analysis showed that nectar is the main honey source in the samples studied. The qualitative analysis of the samples revealed the presence of 53 taxa belonging to 27 families. The Spanish thyme honeys of the studied region are characterized by their medium to high numbers of grains of pollen (NGP; mean = 155 000) and their medium to high content of honeydew indicator elements (HDE; mean = 8300). Genista type (present in 100% of the samples), Echium plantagineum and Reseda luteola (90%), Eucalyptus type (80%), Calendula type and Olea europaea (75%), and Cistus monspeliensis (70%) may be mentioned among the characteristic accompanying species of this honey type.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 146 , 323–330.  相似文献

The existence of a pheromone emitted during copulation has been reported for Rhodnius prolixus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) Stål. Adults possess one pair of metasternal glands (MGs) from which female R. prolixus release volatiles mainly at night. We investigated whether these volatiles emitted by adult R. prolixus can modulate sexual‐related behaviours of opposite and/or same sex individuals. We first used a shelter bioassay to test if adult activity patterns can be affected by chemical signals emitted by opposite sex conspecifics. We observed that males left the shelter more frequently in the presence of females, showing higher activity and an increase of intrasexual copulation attempts. Females showed no shelter‐related activation in the presence of male odours. Second, we used a locomotion compensator device to investigate whether females or males show oriented responses to odours emitted by adults. We found that males oriented towards air currents carrying female odours but females did not orient towards odours emitted by adults. Finally, we observed that males oriented towards the female MG compounds. Thus, a volatile chemical signal emitted by females from their MGs promoted the activation of sheltered males and modulated orientation to air currents.  相似文献
