Previous studies of rodent appendicular morphology suggest that digging activity induces changes in long bones, producing shorter and thicker structures. Subsequent hypotheses have been tested in Ctenomyinae, a group of octodontid rodents globally adapted to subterranean life. Slopes of the equations calculated for extant animals and their corresponding confidence intervals agree with expectations in almost all cases. Results on fossil taxa are less clear, but suggest a morphocline from a plesiomorphic condition of the appendicular skeleton, present in the fossil genera, departing little from that of the current epigeous rodents, to a more derived long bone design in the species of the living genus Ctenomys , in accordance with their digging activity.  相似文献

The Palaearctic genus Arvicola includes two species: the south‐western water vole A. sapidus, and the northern water vole A. terrestris. The latter has semiaquatic and/or subterranean populations, while populations of A. sapidus are always semiaquatic. According to the current phylogenetic and palaeontological data, adaptation to semiaquatic life is plesiomorphic for the genus Arvicola. We studied the ontogenetic allometry of skull and long bones of the semiaquatic A. sapidus, a semiaquatic population of A. terrestris (A. t. italicus), and two fossorial populations of A. terrestris (A. t. scherman and A. t. monticola). Animals from fossorial populations were smaller than were those from semiaquatic populations. We found that most of the ontogenetic allometric exponents of characters linked to digging in the skull and in the long bones were significantly higher in A. t. monticola, a fossorial clade, than they were in the semiaquatic populations. On the other hand, there may have been an evolutionary lag between invasion of the hypogeic habitat and the acquisition of fossorial adaptations in A. t. scherman. We showed statistically that the morphological differences linked to the invasion of a hypogeic habitat are already present in juvenile animals and, according to these results, suggest that these morphological differences are the direct expression of genetic changes rather than the outcome of epigenetic factors of mechanical origin. Moreover, we tried to ascertain whether the apomorphic shape of the skull and long bones in the fossorial populations of A. terrestris (compared with the primitive condition that would have been retained by the semiaquatic A. sapidus) are the outcome of a heterochronic process. Optimization by squared change parsimony supported the hypothesis of an apomorphic reduction of body size linked to the invasion of the subterranean habitat. The comparison of the ontogenetic trajectories of both skull shape and long bone shape suggested that a heterochronic process was involved in this morphological transformation. By using the ‘clock model’ method, this mechanism was identified as ‘accelerated dwarfism’ affecting both the skull and long bones. © 2006 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2006, 87 , 381–391.  相似文献

The incidence of pneumatization in avian long bones was studied, by direct observation, in a large sample of species. Only proximal bones (humerus and femur) presented pneumatization in the sample studied. The incidence obtained was related to the variation of the maximum cortical thickness and mechanical properties, such as bending strength and flexural Young's modulus. Cortical thickness, bending strength and flexural Young's modulus were significantly lower in pneumatized bones than in marrow-filled bones. Furthermore, some congruence was found between pneumatization and systematic groups when compared. In this sense, Charadriformes was the only order studied with total absence of long bone pneumatization. Results on cortical thickness appear to be in agreement with modelling predictions previously made and with results obtained on other groups of flying vertebrates. The possible selective advantage of reduction in cortical thickness in relation to flying is suggested.  相似文献

Biomechanical reconstruction is increasingly being applied to the study of the mode of life of fossil animals. Different footprints from the fossil mammal Megatherium sp., the giant ground sloth, seem to indicate that it was able to use either bipedal or quadrupedal locomotion. By means of the estimation of the body mass of the type of the species Megatherium americanum , and using the published tracks, different mechanical parameters, such as speed, Froude number, indicators of athletic ability and bending and resistance moments of the vertebral column were calculated in both bipedal and quadrupedal conditions. Results on leg parameters are not conclusive as to the kind of locomotion to which Megatherium sp. was better adapted, but the calculations on the moments of resistance of the vertebral column and on the bending moment at breaking of the femur seem to indicate that Megatherium sp. presented adaptations to bipedalism.
