Synchronization of estrus after treatment with Luprostiol in beef cows and in beef and dairy heifers
Four trials were conducted to study synchronous estrous response in beef cows and in beef and dairy heifers to Luprostiol (13, thia-PG-F(2)alpha analog) in comparison with other prostaglandin products. In Trial 1, 60 virgin beef heifers were observed for estrus for 5 d and artificially inseminated. Heifers not observed in estrus within 5 d were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 25 mg Lutalyse. In Trial 2, 75 multiparous, lactating beef cows were randomly assigned to receive either 15 mg Luprostiol, 25 mg Lutalyse or 500 mcg Estrumate. All cows received a second injection of the respective treatment 11 d later. In Trial 3, 96 multiparous, lactating beef cows were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 25 mg Lutalyse. All cows received a second injection of the respective treatment 11 d later. In Trial 4, virgin dairy heifers were palpated per rectum. Seventy-seven heifers with a palpable corpus luteum (CL) were randomly assigned to receive 15 mg Luprostiol or 500 mcg Estrumate. In all trials animals were artificially inseminated 12 h following observed estrus. Estrous response during the 5-d synchronized period was 44% for Luprostiol and 42% for Lutalyse treated heifers in Trial 1. It was 52, 56 and 60%, respectively, for Luprostiol, Lutalyse and Estrumate treated cows in Trial 2; 23% for Luprostiol and 19% for Lutalyse treated cows in Trial 3; and 68% for Luprostiol and 70% for Estrumate treated heifers in Trial 4. A procedure was developed for construction of industrial strains of distiller's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). It includes several steps: construction of congenic genetically marked haploid strains of opposite mating types starting from an industrial strain of hybrid nature, integrative transformation of the above haploid strains with a DNA fragment containing an expression cassette responsible for new technological facilities, and hybridization of transformants and isolation of final industrial homozygous strains under experimental conditions simulating commercial fermentation processes. This strategy permits the generation of strains that have desirable characteristics of traditional races of distiller's yeast along with new technological facilities determined by the particular expression cassette. We investigated the structure and seasonality of the proximity network in a group of polygynous western black crested gibbons (Nomascus concolor) using social network analysis. The spatial proximity changed seasonally and was affected by temperature and rainfall. Preferred proximity association was not distributed randomly among individuals. Kinship was one explanation for the social structure, as offspring preferred to maintain close proximity with their mothers. The proximity of infants to mothers decreased with age, and independent offspring had lower proximity to mothers than dependent ones. We found that the adult male had different proximity relationships with two different adult females. The frequency of proximity between the male and the infant-carrying female was significantly higher than that between the male and the female who had immigrated carrying one offspring of uncertain paternity into the group. Infanticide avoidance and/or predation protection for dependent infants might explain the proximity relationship differences. Temperature influenced group proximity association, with individual proximity increasing in the cold months and decreasing in the hot months. Experiments were performed: (i) to investigate potential age- and gender-dependent differences in mutagenic responses in T cells following exposures of B6C3F1 mice and F344 rats by inhalation for 2 weeks to 0 or 1250 ppm butadiene (BD), and (ii) to determine if exposures for 2 weeks to 62.5 ppm BD produce a mutagenic effect in female rats. To evaluate the effect of age on mutagenic response, mutant manifestation curves for splenic T cells of female mice exposed at 8-9 weeks of age were defined by measuring Hprt mutant frequencies (MFs) at multiple time points after BD exposure using a T cell cloning assay and comparing the resulting mutagenic potency estimate (calculated as the difference of areas under the mutant manifestation curves of treated versus control animals) to that reported for female mice exposed to BD in the same fashion beginning at 4-5 weeks of age. The shapes of the mutant T cell manifestation curves for spleens were different [e.g., the maximum BD-induced MFs in older mice (8.0+/-1.0 [S.D.]x10(-6)) and younger mice (17.8+/-6.1 x 10(-6)) were observed at 8 and 5 weeks post-exposure, respectively], but the mutagenic burden was the same for both age groups. To assess the effect of gender on mutagenic response, female and male rodents were exposed to BD at 4-5 weeks of age and Hprt MFs were measured when maximum MFs are expected to occur post-exposure. The resulting data demonstrated that the pattern for mutagenic susceptibility from high-level BD exposure is female mice>male mice>female rats>male rats. Exposures of female rats to 62.5 ppm BD caused a minor but significant mutagenic response compared with controls (n=16/group; P=0.03). These results help explain part of the differing outcomes/interpretations of data in earlier Hprt mutation studies in BD-exposed rodents. 相似文献
