Oviposition decisions and their fitness consequences for the seed parasite Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) were investigated. Female S. oryzae lay eggs inside seeds such as wheat [Triticum aestivum (L.)]. Because larvae develop to adult within a single seed, the resources available are determined by the behavior of the female parent and characteristics of the seed in which the egg was deposited. Females were demonstrated to lay more eggs in kernels 20 mg. Females initiated the chewing of oviposition holes in shriveled kernels but were less likely to oviposit in them. Progeny size increased with increasing seed size, but the probability of an adult emerging was not affected. Females accepted large kernels more quickly than small kernels and this contributed to increased oviposition in large kernels. The increase in the number of eggs per kernel appears to result from an increase in number of visits resulting in oviposition rather than an increase in the number of eggs laid during a visit. 相似文献

The ability of the gregarious larval endoparasitoid Cotesia glomerata L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) to adjust progeny sex ratio and clutch size was investigated. The sex ratios (proportion of males) of field clusters were diverse, but many (70%) were female-biased. Nearly 10% yielded males only, suggesting a low percentage of unmated females in the field. In over half of the clusters containing females, the sex ratio was below 0.3. Superparasitism was common in the field, and females were believed to increase progeny sex ratio when attacking previously-parasitized hosts. However, in a single oviposition bout, sex allocation was not precisely controlled both in the field and laboratory. In the laboratory, the number of eggs laid in a day tended to decrease with increasing female age. For females which were offered two hosts per day and for those offered three hosts per day, this value became nearly the same several days after the start of oviposition. The total number of hosts which a female could parasitize during her lifetime was often less than 40. Some of the old females which attacked more than 40 hosts produced male-biased clutches; this was due to sperm depletion, because sperm remained viable throughout a female's lifetime. The amount of sperm used in a single oviposition bout seemed fixed and was not dependent on the number of eggs laid. Females with much oviposition experience did not produce new eggs to compensate for deposited eggs, and the efficiency of egg use (deposited eggs/total eggs) was more than 80%. 相似文献

Time-related changes in the patterns of host discrimination may have a complex form depending on whether or not hosts are marked following first parasitisation, the persistence of chemicals in these marks, and changes in the host as a result of being parasitised. Here we present an experimental design capable of detecting temporal patterns in host discrimination of solitary parasitoids. This method is tested against experimental data from Aphidius ervi attacking the aphid, Acyrthosiphon kondoi. The results demonstrate that there are statistically significant changes in the patterns of egg distribution in aphid hosts held for intervals between 1 and 48 h between parasitisation. These changes appear to be attributable to increasing oviposition restraint by the superparasitising female as the time interval between attacks is increased. The form of this relationship is not significantly different to a sigmoid function and the rate of change of restraint was greatest between 6–8 h after the first oviposition. 相似文献

Host-discrimination behavior by the koinobiont parasitoid, Psyllaephagus pistaciae Ferrière (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae), the major biocontrol agent of the common pistachio psylla, Agonoscena pistaciae Burckhardt & Lauterer (Hemiptera: Psyllidae), in Iran, was investigated in the laboratory. The results demonstrated that P. pistaciae quickly detected and avoided freshly parasitized hosts, either after antennating or by probing with their ovipositor. However, this discriminatory ability declined with time, probably influenced by both external and internal markers left by the previous ovipositing female. The results also confirmed that female P. pistaciae responded to changes in host quality associated with the parasitoid's larval development 4 days after the initial parasitization, clearly indicating that the second female could detect the presence of the larvae and adjust her host-selection decision. In addition, psyllid nymphs treated topically with a solution of Dufour's gland were rejected by the parasitoid, showing that Dufour's gland secretion had a significant effect as a host marking chemical. The current study also showed that superparasitism increased the host-mortality and that the rate of encapsulation decreased, suggesting that, when two eggs are laid in the same psyllid nymph, only one parasitoid develops to an adult. 相似文献

The solitary endoparasitoid, Microplitis rufiventris, attacks and can develop in earlier instars of Spodoptera littoralis larvae with preference to third‐instar larvae. We used the last stadium (sixth instar), a stage which is not naturally parasitized. The newly moulted larvae (0–3 h old) of this stadium were more acceptable for parasitization by the wasp females than the older ones (24 h old). Parasitization by M. rufiventris wasp of last instar S. littoralis larvae leads to dose (no. of eggs + parasitoid factors)‐dependent effects which were more pronounced at 20°C than at 27°C. A single oviposition into a sixth instar host larva resulted in normal development of the host. However, superparasitization increased the proportions of developmentally arrested hosts and number of live wasp larvae. Development of supernumerary individuals of the parasitoid in the host larva leads to dose‐related adverse effects on host growth and development. The present study may provide interesting opportunities for studying the physiological bases of host–parasitoid interactions and parasitoid intra‐specific competition in the biological system considered. 相似文献

Decision to superparasitize based on larval survival: competition between aphid parasitoids Aphidius ervi and Aphidius smithi 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Oviposition by a parasitoid wasp in an already parasitized host (= superparasitism) may result in larval competition and the loss of offspring. Consequently, in solitary species, the decision to superparasitize should be based on the probability of offspring survival. Females of Aphidius ervi Haliday and A. smithi Sharma & Subba Rao (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), two parasitoids of the pea aphid, discriminated between conspecific-and heterospecific-parasitized hosts. Both species showed partial preference for aphids previously attacked by A. smithi, a result predicted from the fact that A. ervi is superior to A. smithi in larval competition under most conditions. Females of A. smithi selectively attacked conspecific-parasitized pea aphids when given a choice between these and self-parasitized hosts. Results indicated that females of both species responded to an external pheromone-like marker to discriminate between selfconspecific-and heterospecific-parasitized aphids. In addition, A. smithi may use internal cues to recognize, and avoid oviposition in, aphids previously parasitized by A. ervi.
Résumé L'oviposition par une guêpe parasite dans un hôte qui a déjà été parasité (= superparasitisme) pourrait conduire à une compétition entre larves et à une perte de progéniture. Par conséquent, dans les espèces solitaires, la décision de superparasiter devrait être basée sur la probabilité de survie de la progéniture. Les femelles de Aphidius ervi Haliday et de A. smithi Sharma & Subba Rao (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), deux parasites du puceron du pois, ont discriminé entre les hôtes parasités par des individus de la même espèce et ceux parasités par des individus d'une espèce différente. Les deux espèces de parasite ont montré une préférence partielle pour les pucerons préalablement parasités par A. smithi, résultat qui était prévisible du fait que, dans la majorité des cas, A. ervi est supérieur à A. smithi dans la compétition entre larves. Les femelles de A. smithi ont sélectivement attaqué les pucerons parasités par un individu de la même espèce lorsqu'il leur était donné de choisir parmi ceux-ci et ceux parasités par les même individu. Les résultats indiquaient que les femelles des deux espèces répondaient à une sorte de phéromone externe pour distinguer les pucerons parasités par le même individu de ceux parasités par un individu de la même espèce et ceux parasités d'une autre espèce. - 1 The larvae of many gregarious parasitoid species are usually non‐aggressive when they develop in or on a host, but those of Metaphycus flavus are one of the few exceptions known. Herein we describe their aggressive behaviour and the conditions under which it occurs, using observations in which larval development and physical conflict within parasitised and superparasitised hosts were mapped daily.
- 2 Metaphycus flavus larvae often engaged in physical conflict that resulted in consumption of the losing larvae (= cannibalism ) in superparasitised hosts, whereas such conflict and consumption occurred rarely when a single brood developed in a host.
- 3 Cannibalism among M. flavus larvae only occurred after the host resources had become scarce. Typically it occurred after the sixth day of development (fourth‐instar larvae) when the larvae in a clutch had separated from their aeroscopic plate and were freed of their attachment to the host's cuticle.
- 4 Female larvae in the initial clutch appeared more aggressive than male larvae when a second clutch was allocated 4 h after the first clutch. The probability of a larva being attacked and consumed by a brood mate increased as the number of larvae increased in the host. This partial tolerance might allow the members of the initial brood to defend themselves from offspring of a superparasitising female (= competitors ). Such post‐ovipositional regulation of brood size might be interpreted as high‐density intolerance among female offspring.

Abstract The diapause of two populations of Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (T. evanescens A and T. evanescens B), collected from different Iranian insect pests, was studied. T. evunescens A in the eggs of Corcyra cephalonica was easily induced to stable diapause with constant 8°C, 15 % and fluctuating temperature (11–23) C -11C. T. evanescens B could not be induced to diapause with the same temperatural regime and host. The experiments showed that the host of maternal generations and the ability of avoiding super-parasitism may play an important role in intraspecific variation of T. evunescens in diapause induction. 相似文献

Sex ratio theory has proved remarkably useful in testing theadaptive nature of animal behavior. A particularly productivearea in this respect is Hamilton's theory of local mate competition(LMC), which has been extended in numerous directions to includegreater biological realism, allowing more detailed tests inspecific organisms. We have presented one such extension, termedasymmetrical LMC, which occurs when egg laying by females ona patch is asynchronous, and emerging males do not disperse,resulting in the extent of LMC on a patch varying over time.Our aim here is to test whether the parasitoid wasp Nasoniavitripennis responds to variation in the degree of asymmetricalLMC. Specifically, we show that females adjust their offspringsex ratios in response to (1) variation in the amount of asynchronyin emergence between broods on a patch and (2) the number andproportion of previously parasitized hosts on the patch. Ourresults provide qualitative support for the predictions of theory,suggesting new levels of complexity in the sex ratio behaviorof this much-studied organism. However, our results do not alwaysprovide quantitative support for theory, suggesting furthercomplexities that must be clarified. 相似文献
