Summary Bacteria utilizing high concentrations of acetonitrile as the sole carbon source were isolated and identified asChromobacterium sp. andPseudomonas aeruginosa. Maximum growth was attained after 96 h of incubation andP. aeruginosa grew slightly faster thanChromobacterium sp. The strains were able to grow and oxidize acetonitrile at concentrations as high as 600 mM. However, higher concentrations inhibited growth and oxygen uptake. Degradation studies with (14C)acetonitrile indicated 57% of acetonitrile was degraded byPseudomonas aeruginosa as compared to 43% byChromobacterium. The isolates utilized different nitrile compounds as carbon substrates.  相似文献

The interconnection network is one of the key architectural components in any parallel computer. The distribution of the traffic injected into the network is among the factors that greatly influences network performance. The uniform traffic pattern has been adopted in many existing network performance evaluation studies due to the tractability of the resulting analytical modelling approach. However, many real applications exhibit non-uniform traffic patterns such as hot-spot traffic. K-ary n-cubes have been the mostly widely used in the implementation of practical parallel systems. Extensive research studies have been conducted on the performance modelling and evaluation of these networks. Nonetheless, most of these studies have been confined to uniform traffic distributions and have been based on software simulation. The present paper proposes a new stochastic model to predict message latency in k-ary n-cubes with deterministic routing in the presence of hot-spot traffic. The model has been validated through simulation experiments and has shown a close agreement with simulation results.

The integrins alpha(vbeta3) and alpha(vbeta5) have been implicated in playing a key role in the process of angiogenesis. In this study, we examined the effects of hypoxia, an important stimulus of angiogenesis, on the differential expression of the integrin subunits beta(3) and beta(5). beta(3) and beta(5) messenger RNA (mRNA), protein levels, and alpha(v)beta(3) function were measured in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) cultured under normoxic and hypoxic (1% O(2)) conditions. Cells exposed to hypoxic conditions for up to 72 h showed gradually increased mRNA levels of alpha(V) and beta(3), peaking at 24 h, in comparison with cells cultured under normoxic conditions. However, beta(5) mRNA levels, under the same hypoxic conditions, remained at a constant level. Results from Western blot analysis of HUVECs, cultured under hypoxic conditions, paralleled those of the Northern analysis with an increased expression in alpha(v)beta(3) protein levels, measured by blotting with LM609, evident by 24 h. alpha(v)beta(5) protein levels, measured by blotting with P1F6, did not change for up to 72 h. HUVECs cultured under hypoxic conditions for 72 h showed increased attachment to fibrinogen, an alpha(v)beta(3) mediated process. These results indicate that hypoxia can increase expression of alpha(v)beta(3) in HUVECs, and that hypoxic regulation of alpha(v)beta(3) may be an important regulator of angiogenesis.  相似文献

Two derivatives of 2-(4-acetylanilino)quinolines (IIIa, b) were synthesized as scaffolds for synthesis of open chalcone analogues (Va-f) through Claisen-Schmidt condensation with a set of aromatic aldehydes (IVa-d). Derivatives (Va, b) were further manipulated into cyclic ??,??-unsaturated ketones by Michael-addition of acetylacetone and ethylacetoacetate affording derivatives (VI?CVII). Deethoxycarboxylation of derivatives (VIIa, b) afforded cyclohexenons (VIIIa, b) allowing formation of a mini library of ??,??-unsaturated ketones for screening their anticancer and synergistic anticancer effect with doxorubicin using colon cancer cell line (Caco-2). Two open enones, (Vb) and (Ve), showed significant anticancer activity with IC50 of 5.0 and 2.5 ??M respectively. Only one cyclic enone, (VIa) showed synergistic anticancer activity with doxorubicin at 10 ??M.  相似文献

The daily Egg Production Rate (EPR) of the three Acartiidae copepods namely Acartia clausi, Paracartia latisetosa and Paracartia grani in the North Lagoon of Tunis was compared to temperature and food availability every season from March, 2003 to February, 2004 corresponding to the major seasonal peaks of their abundance and over a 20-days period. The daily EPR was evaluated by assuming a direct correlation with chlorophyll a, particulate organic carbon (POC), and some easily extractable macromolecular compounds from the seston, such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. The results showed significant differences in EPR between seasons and species. Temperature and salinity negatively affected the fecundity of A. clausi and positively that of P. latisetosa and P. grani. The A. clausi EPR was supported by chlorophyll a and sestonic proteins while that of P. latisetosa and P. grani correlated with POC suggesting that these two taxa feed on microzooplankton and detritus more than on phytoplankton. Overall, EPR data showed potential population recruitment evidently the highest in P. latisetosa in summer, P. grani in autumn and A. clausi in winter. Our results indicate that temperature and food quality are the determining factors of both abundance and reproduction of the copepods under study.  相似文献

Sleep loss is among the most common yet frequently overlooked problems. This disruptive influence is associated with an adverse lipid profile (LP) and consequently results in an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, it has been well established that athletes are increasingly confronted with sleep problems. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of one night of partial sleep deprivation (PSD) on the cardiovascular profile and LP in young, trained athletes. Ten male Taekwondo athletes were randomized for three sleep conditions in a counterbalanced order: (i) following a baseline sleep night (BN), (ii) following PSD at the beginning of the night (PSDBN), and (iii) following PSD at the end of the night (PSDEN). Basal cardiovascular physiological measures were recorded, and blood samples were taken in the fasted state following each sleep session (i.e., in the morning at 07:00 h). The results showed that myoglobin and creatine phosphokinase increased significantly after PSDEN but not after PSDBN. By contrast, no alteration was observed in the LP and physiological parameters following the two types of PSD. In conclusion, these results show that PSDEN increases cardiac damage biomarkers significantly, even though they do not reach clinical significance. Thus, one night of PSD does not affect the physiological responses and biomarkers of LP in Taekwondo athletes.  相似文献

Objectives: Geraniol, a natural monoterpene, is an essential oil component of many plants. Methotrexate is an anti-metabolite drug, used for cancer and autoimmune conditions; however, clinical uses of methotrexate are limited by its concomitant renal injury. This study investigated the efficacy of geraniol to prevent methotrexate-induced acute kidney injury and via scrutinizing the Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1, P38MAPK/NF-κB and Bax/Bcl2/caspase-3 and -9 pathways. Methods: Male Wister rats were allocated into five groups: control, geraniol (orally), methotrexate (IP), methotrexate and geraniol (100 and 200 mg/kg). Results: Geraniol effectively reduced the serum levels of creatinine, urea and Kim-1 with an increase in the serum level of albumin when compared to the methotrexate-treated group. Geraniol reduced Keap1, escalated Nrf2 and HO-1, enhanced the antioxidant parameters GSH, SOD, CAT and GSHPx and reduced MDA and NO. Geraniol decreased renal P38 MAPK and NF-κB and ameliorated the inflammatory mediators TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6 and IL-10. Geraniol negatively regulated the apoptotic mediators Bax and caspase-3 and -9 and increased Bcl2. All the biochemical findings were supported by the alleviation of histopathological changes in kidney tissues. Conclusion: The current findings support that co-administration of geraniol with methotrexate may attenuate methotrexate-induced acute kidney injury.  相似文献

In the cold-shock protein CspB from Bacillus subtilis three exposed Phe residues (F15, F17, and F27) are essential for its function in binding to single-stranded nucleic acids. Usually, the hydrophobic Phe side chains are buried in folded proteins. We asked here whether the exposition of the essential Phe residues could be a cause for the very low conformational stability of CspB. Urea-induced and heat-induced equilibrium unfolding transitions were measured for three mutants of CspB, where Phe 15, Phe 17, and Phe 27 were individually replaced by alanine. Unexpectedly, all three mutations strongly destabilized CspB. The aromatic side chains of Phe 15, Phe 17, and Phe 27 in the active site are thus important for both binding to nucleic acids and conformational stability. There is no compromise between function and stability in the active site. Model calculations indicate that, although they are partially exposed to solvent, all three Phe residues nevertheless lose accessible surface upon folding, and this should favor the native state. A different result is obtained with the F38A variant. Phe 38 is hyperexposed in native CspB, and its substitution by Ala is in fact stabilizing. In 2003, a new fruit fly pest species was recorded for the first time in Kenya and has subsequently been found in 28 countries across tropical Africa. The insect was described as Bactrocera invadens, due to its rapid invasion of the African continent. In this study, the morphometry and DNA Barcoding of different populations of B. invadens distributed across the species range of tropical Africa and a sample from the pest''s putative aboriginal home of Sri Lanka was investigated. Morphometry using wing veins and tibia length was used to separate B. invadens populations from other closely related Bactrocera species. The Principal component analysis yielded 15 components which correspond to the 15 morphometric measurements. The first two principal axes contributed to 90.7% of the total variance and showed partial separation of these populations. Canonical discriminant analysis indicated that only the first five canonical variates were statistically significant. The first two canonical variates contributed a total of 80.9% of the total variance clustering B. invadens with other members of the B. dorsalis complex while distinctly separating B. correcta, B. cucurbitae, B. oleae and B. zonata. The largest Mahalanobis squared distance (D2 = 122.9) was found to be between B. cucurbitae and B. zonata, while the lowest was observed between B. invadens populations against B. kandiensis (8.1) and against B. dorsalis s.s (11.4). Evolutionary history inferred by the Neighbor-Joining method clustered the Bactrocera species populations into four clusters. First cluster consisted of the B. dorsalis complex (B. invadens, B. kandiensis and B. dorsalis s. s.), branching from the same node while the second group was paraphyletic clades of B. correcta and B. zonata. The last two are monophyletic clades, consisting of B. cucurbitae and B. oleae, respectively. Principal component analysis using the genetic distances confirmed the clustering inferred by the NJ tree.  相似文献
