Vitis vinifera L. plants were grown in containers and each plant's single shoot was orientated upwards or downwards. Some plants were trained first upwards, then downwards, then again upwards (N-shaped plants). Vegetative growth was reduced in plants trained downwards compared to that in upward and N-shaped plants. Shoot growth rate slowed in downward shoot portions, but only after the apex had grown downwards for at least 10 internodes. Shoot hydraulic conductivity k h, measured after elimination of xylem embolisms, was lower in downward than in upward plants. In N-shaped plants k h was higher in the upward-growing shoot portions, and lower in the central, downward-growing portion. Shoot- and leaf-specific conductivities were also lower in downward than in upward shoot portions. Xylem cross-sectional area and xylem structure (number of wedges, number of vessels per unit xylem area) differed little in the three orientations. In contrast, vessel diameter and the sum of vessel cross-sectional areas were significantly smaller in downward than in upward shoot portions. These differences could explain the reduction in conductivity observed in the downward-orientated shoot portions. The measurements taken on N-shaped plants showed that the decreases in k h and in vessel size were a result of shoot orientation, not shoot bending.  相似文献

Metaxylem tracheary elements of roots have differentiation between end walls and lateral walls in both Euryale and Victoria End walls have narrower, more closely spaced bars and scalariform plates. primary walls of end walls (and, to a lesser extent, lateral walls) have striations that are thickened primary wall portions orientated in an axial direction. These striations are less common in Victoria than in Euryale. Although secondary wall strands between perforations occur in some dicotyledons, the report of primary wall striations is new; these can be seen with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) but not with light microscopy. Perforations occur irregularly and sometimes sparsely on end walls of tracheary elements of Victoria , but perforations were not observed in Euryale. Thus, Euryale satisfies one criterion for the presence of vessel (end wall different from lateral wall), whereas Barclaya satisfies another (perforations in end walls) and Victoria satisfies both. Vessel origins in Nymphaeaceae are important in illustrating that there may be multiple vessel origins in dicotyledons.  相似文献

Abstract At an applied nitrate concentration of 1 mol m?3, the proportion of xylem sap nitrogen as nitrate was < 15% for Cajanus cajan, Lupinus albus and Trifolium repens, 33% for Pisum sativum and within the range 57–62% for Glycine max, Phaseolus vulgar is, Stellaria media and Xanthium strumarium. At an applied nitrate concentration of 10 mol m~3 the value had increased to 66% for T. repens while at 20 mol m?3 nitrate values had increased to 46, 51 and 49% for C. cajan, L. albus and Pisum sativum, respectively, and 89% and 85% for 5. media and X. strumarium, respectively. Glycine max and Phaseolus vulgaris differed from the other species in that the proportion of their xylem sap nitrogen as nitrate remained constant (~ 60%) as applied nitrate concentration increased from 1 to 20 mol m?3. The proportion of total plant nitrate reductase activity in the shoot of C. cajan, S. media and X. strumarium increased as applied nitrate concentration increased from 1 to 20 mol m?3. Values at the lower and upper concentrations were, respectively, 26 and 72% for C. cajan. 48 and 80% for X. strumarium and 68 and 87% for S. media. The partitioning of nitrate assimilation between root and shoot in these species is discussed.  相似文献

Cytokinins are predominantly root-born phytohormones which are distributed in the shoot via the xylem stream. In the hormone message concept they are considered as root signals mediating the transport of the photosynthates to the various sinks of a plant. In this paper the cytokinin relations of Urtica dioica L., the stinging nettle, are described, based on the daily flux from the roots to the shoot. Trans-zeatin-type cytokinins predominate in the various tissues of Urtica (Wagner and Beck, 1993), and accordingly trans-zeatin riboside and trans-zeatin are the forms transported by the xylem sap. The daily time-course of cytokinin concentration in root pressure exudates and in xylem sap collected from a petiole after pressurizing the root bed showed high concentrations in the morning, followed by a substantial drop to a level of 15–30% of the initial concentration which was then maintained during the afternoon. This time-course is interpreted as resulting from continuous synthesis and exudation of cytokinins into the xylem fluid of the roots whose cytokinin concentration is then modified by the dynamics of the transpiration stream. Loading of cytokinins into the xylem sap could be enhanced several times by increasing the flux rate of the xylem stream to the maximal transpiration rate when a maximum export rate was reached. The total daily cytokinin gain by the shoot depended on the nitrogen status of the plant. Roots of Urtica plants grown on a sufficient nitrogen supply had a significantly higher cytokinin content and exuded more cytokinins into the shoot than those of plants raised under nitrogen shortage. A positive correlation was found between the steady rates of cytokinin export measured during the afternoon and the shoot to root-ratios of biomass which, in turn, corresponded to the nitrogen status of the plants.  相似文献

Three-week-old sunflower plants ( Helianthus annuus L. cv. Halcón) grown in nutrient solution at two K+ levels (0.3 and 2.5 m M ) were used to study the effect of 4 μ M abscisic acid (ABA) on the transport of K+ (Rb+) and water to the exuding stream of decapitated plants. Other conditions of the bathing medium of the roots were also assayed, such as presence of 10 m M glucose, aeration and time of ABA application. In the first 2 or 3 h after ABA application, ABA always promoted water and ion fluxes, even under the most unfavorable conditions such as low K+ roots without glucose or under anaerobiosis. The ABA-promoting effect on ion and water flow was higher with glucose in the medium. Under anaerobiosis the ABA effect disappeared after 3 h. With glucose and aeration the ABA-promoting effect appeared early and continued for several hours, although the effect decreased with time. If ABA was applied 24 h before excision, the effect was small or even negative. We suggest that ABA acts directly on membranes of certain root cells (endodermal or both endodermal and cortical cells) by increasing their permeability and thus releasing ions. This will decrease cell turgor pressure and, indirectly, the hydraulic conductivity of the whole root. Under conditions of higher hydraulic conductivity, the presence of ions and glucose in the root stimulates the transport of ions into the xylem. and thus increases the osmotic water flow.  相似文献
