Coccinella magnifica Redtenbacher lives only in close contact with species of the Formica rufa group. Laboratory experiments were set up to determine how this species may be adapted to living with ants by comparing its
behaviour with that of the closely related Coccinella septempunctata L. Eggs and larvae of C. magnifica placed on the foraging trails of ants were bitten significantly less often by the ants than those of C. septempunctata. However, the ants responded similarly to the adults of both species. For these two species, the presence of ants resulted
in a significant decrease in predation efficiency. However, C. magnifica was more efficient at catching aphids in the presence of ants than C. septempunctata. The behaviour of this myrmecophilous species is discussed by taking into account that it is a generalist in terms of prey

SYNOPSIS. A new species of neogregarine, Mattesia geminata sp. n., that infects immature stages of the tropical fire ant, Solenopsis geminata (Fabricius), is described. The parasite, which develops in the hypodermis, causes disruption of the developing eyes, melanization of the cuticle, and death of pupae. lntracolonial infection rates are usually less than 2±, but may exceed 90±. Canopy connectivity influences foraging, movement, and competition in arboreal ant communities. Understanding how canopy connectivity affects arboreal ant communities could inform the development of management practices that maximize services from known biocontrol agents. We experimentally manipulated connectivity between the crowns of large shade trees to investigate the effects of canopy connectivity on arboreal ant species richness and composition in a coffee agroecosystem. A linear mixed-effects analysis showed that the number of species observed at baits set in tree crowns increased significantly after the crowns had been connected with nylon ropes. Crowns that were connected increased in similarity of ant species composition, particularly between adjacent connected crowns. Connectivity may increase the number of species present in tree crowns by allowing ants to move and forage in the canopy while bypassing trunks with more aggressive, territorial species such as Azteca sericeasur. Because twig-nesting species in the upper canopy have been shown to act as biocontrol agents of herbivores, an increase in species richness in tree crowns could have positive implications for agricultural pest-control services. 相似文献

Abstract. Respiratory rates of individual workers of Camponotus rufipes Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) were measured at 25C and LD 12:12 h (lights on 06.00 hours), DL 12:12h (lights on 18.00 hours), LL (850 lux) and DD (red light, 20–30 lux), using the micro-Warburg technique. Worker ants were collected from natural nest during the winter of 1987 in a woodland park in the region of Rio Claro, Sāo Paulo, Brazil. The respiration of ants showed a circadian rhythm with acrophase ranging from 20 h 41 min to O1 h 18 min and from 10 h 32 min to 12 h 22 min at LD and DD, respectively. In constant darkness the rhythmometric variables were similar to those presented by ants kept at LD 12:12 h. Under constant light no circadian rhythm in the respiration rates was found. A reduction in the amplitude was observed, indicating an inhibitory effect of this light regime on the respiration process. 相似文献

1. Interactions between aphids and ants are considered to be mutualistic, with both partners benefiting. Costs associated with such interactions are likely to be less obvious, although they can be expected, especially if these associations are facultative.
2. It is demonstrated here that there are costs in several life-history parameters to individual aphids resulting from ant attendance. Over several generations Aphis fabae cirsiiacanthoides feeding on Cirsium arvense , at a range of developmental stages, suffered significant costs when tended by Lasius niger , e.g. in terms of a prolonged developmental time, delayed offspring production, proportionally smaller gonads, fewer well developed embryos and a reduced mean relative growth rate. Abstract I investigated the relationship between species richness and composition of ant faunas, and sampling intensity in two regions with different long‐term histories of grazing intensity in mulga (Acacia aneura) woodlands in northern New South Wales. There were two aims: (i) to examine the relationship between sampling intensity and species richness and composition; and (ii) to explore the differences in ant assemblages from two regions of markedly different grazing intensity when sampled at different intensities (i.e. when a higher proportion of the local ant fauna were collected). Ants were sampled in pit traps (120‐mm diameter) at densities of two, four, six and nine pits per 100 m2. Each sampling‐intensity treatment was replicated three times within each region. Pit traps filled with preservative were opened for 3 days. Species richness was higher with each successive increase in sampling intensity but was not different between regions for a given trapping intensity. There was no obvious asymptote of the curve relating trapping intensity to cumulative species richness suggesting that even greater trap densities than those used in the present study would be needed to collect most of the species of ants using a patch of ground over a few days. Spatial replication of a low‐intensity sampling design did not capture as many species as one higher‐intensity sampling array with the same total number of pit traps. This result can be explained by aggressive numerically dominant species of ants monopolizing access to a greater proportion of the traps in low‐density arrays. Ordination reveals that regions and sampling‐intensity treatments could be discriminated and that differences between regions with different grazing histories were less apparent with high‐intensity sampling arrays than they were with low‐intensity sampling arrays. This suggests that differences between locations in space (or potentially samples in time) could be exaggerated by incomplete sampling of the patch‐scale fauna. Comparison of the present study with other studies suggests that most studies to date have used sampling intensities that would not give a thorough assessment of the patch‐scale ground‐dwelling fauna if sampled only by pit traps. The implications of the results for programmes of ant monitoring in rangelands are discussed. 相似文献

The ant Cataglyphis cursor is exceptional in that unmated workers are potentially able to lay both male and female eggs. We characterized eight pairs of primers for microsatellite loci, developed from genomic DNA for this species. Variability was tested with DNA from 19 workers and all eight loci were highly polymorphic, displaying 5–10 alleles and a high level of heterozygosity. Cross‐species amplifications indicate that these microsatellites might be useful in genetic studies of other species belonging to the genus Cataglyphis. 相似文献

Abstract Sampling of invertebrate fauna was carried out on Mt Coot-tha, between 25 February and 11 March 1992, to determine whether the presence of the coastal brown ant, Pheidole megacephala (Fabricius), affected die abundance and diversity of other invertebrates. Four plots were sampled; in two the coastal brown ant was present and in two it was absent. The overall abundance of invertebrates did not differ significantly between plots. The abundance of Collembola did vary significantly, but intraplot variability was large. Mite numbers did not differ significantly between plots, except for the family Laelapidae. Abundance of other ant species did not differ significantly between plots, but there was a difference in species composition; Dolichoderinae and Ponerinae were absent or poorly represented in plots where the coastal brown ant was present. 相似文献
