Macerated papaya seeds and pulp contained benzyl isothiocyanate, produced by the enzymatic hydrolysis of benzyl glucosinolate by thioglucosidase. The substrate and enzyme were localized in different areas. In mature papaya seeds, thioglucosidase was found in sarcotestae but not in endosperms, while the reverse was true for benzyl glucosinolate, which constituted more than 6% (w/w) of the endosperms. Both the enzyme and substrate were present in embryos and the amount of the latter was 3·9% (w/w). In immature papaya pulp, benzyl glucosinolate was localized principally, if not exclusively, in the latex, ranging from 7·3 to 11·6% of the dry wt of latex fluid. No thioglucosidase activity was found in papaya latex. The possible significance of the localization of this enzyme-substrate system and aspects concerning functions of papaya latex are discussed.  相似文献

Individual specialization can influence important ecological and evolutionary traits and both inter‐ and intra‐individual variation in resource use can drive niche shifts in natural populations. We evaluated the predominance of these two factors for determining seasonal differences in the trophic niche of the didelphid marsupial Gracilinanus agilis (Burmeister, 1854) in the highly seasonal Brazilian savanna. In the three sampled sites, the population of G. agilis increased its dietary niche width in the warm–wet season, when food resources are more abundant, and there were no differences between sexes and no interaction between season and sex. However, the evaluation of intra‐individual variation indicated that females reduce the number of items consumed during the warm–wet season, whereas males show no seasonal differences. Inter‐individual variation nonetheless followed the overall population pattern because both sexes increased their spread with respect to food‐item consumption in the warm–wet season. Additionally, we found positive relationships between body length and diet only in the warm–wet season, when larger animals fed more on invertebrates and less on fruits than the small ones. Our results show a previously unknown pattern for mammals, in which the trophic niche is wider during the high‐resource season as a result of inter‐individual variation along the body‐size axis. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2014, 111 , 737–747.  相似文献

The divergence‐with‐gene‐flow model of speciation has a strong theoretical basis with a growing number of plausible examples in nature, but remains hotly debated. Darwin’s finches of the Galápagos Archipelago have played an important role in our understanding of speciation processes. Recent studies suggest that this group may also provide insights into speciation via divergence with gene flow. On the island of Santa Cruz, recent studies found evidence for adaptive divergence in Darwin’s small ground finch, Geospiza fuliginosa, between ecologically contrasting arid and humid zones. Despite the short geographical distance between these zones, strong disruptive selection during low rainfall periods is expected to generate and maintain adaptive divergence. Conversely, during high rainfall periods, when disruptive selection is predicted to be weakened, population divergence in adaptive traits is expected to break down. Because periods of low and high rainfall irregularly alternate, the geographical pattern of adaptive divergence can be assumed to break down and, importantly, regenerate in situ. Here, we use microsatellite allele frequency data to assess the genetic population structure of G. fuliginosa on Santa Cruz. We sample 21 sites and four ecological zones across the island. We reject hypotheses of population substructure linked to ecological and geographical differences among sites in favour of a single panmictic population. Panmixia implies high levels of gene flow within Santa Cruz, which favours selection over genetic drift as a valid process generating phenotypic divergence in G. fuliginosa on Santa Cruz. We discuss how our findings may support classic adaptation, phenotypic plasticity, matching habitat choice or any combination of these three processes.  相似文献

Waterbirds are often observed to move between different wintering sites within the same winter—for example, in response to food availability or weather conditions. Within-winter movements may contribute to the spreading of diseases, such as avian influenza, outside the actual migration period. The Common Pochard Aythya ferina seems to be particularly sensitive to infection with the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N1 and, consequently, could play an important role as vectors for the disease. We describe here the within-winter movements of Pochards in Europe in relation to topography, climate, sex and age. We analysed data provided by the Euring data bank on 201 individuals for which records from different locations from the same winter (December–February) were available. The distances and directions moved within the winter varied markedly between regions, which could be ascribed to the differing topography (coast lines, Alps). We found no significant differences in terms of distances and directions moved between the sexes and only weak indications of differences between the age classes. In Switzerland, juveniles moved in more westerly directions than adults. During relatively mild winters, winter harshness had no effect on the distances travelled, but in cold winters, a positive relationship was observed, a pattern possibly triggered by the freezing of lakes. Winter harshness did not influence the directions of the movement. About 41% (83/201) of the Pochards that were recovered at least 1 km from the ringing site had moved more than 200 km. A substantial number of birds moved between central/southern Europe and the north-western coast of mainland Europe, and between the north-western coast of mainland Europe and Great Britain, whereas no direct exchange between Great Britain and central/southern Europe was observed. Within-winter movements of Pochards seem to be a common phenomenon in all years and possibly occur as a response to the depletion of food resources. This high tendency to move could potentially contribute to the spread of bird-transmitted diseases outside the actual migration period.  相似文献

This paper illustrates the phylogeographical structure of Saxifraga callosa in order to describe its genetic richness in refugial areas and to reconstruct its glacial history. S. callosa is a species spread throughout south-east France and Italy with a high distribution in the Maritime Alps. Four chloroplast microsatellite and AFLP markers were analyzed in populations of S. callosa. The size variants of all tested loci amount to 11 different haplotypes. Intrapopulational haplotype variation was found in two of the populations analyzed: on the Mt. Toraggio in the Maritime Alps, and in the Apuan Alps. On the other hand, no intrapopulational variation was found in 25 populations, most of which were sampled from isolated areas. Analysis of the haplotype distribution showed that population subdivision across all populations was high (G ST = 0.899). Moreover, its genetic structure was studied using AMOVA and STRUCTURE analysis. The study legitimated inferred conclusions about the phylogeographical structure of the species and identified centers of diversity. Considerations concerning genetic structure and divergence among three major clades (Maritime Alps, Apuan Alps and Apennines), the patchy distribution of haplotypes, and the high number of private haplotypes support the proposal that S. callosa survived in some refugia within the Italian Peninsula refugium, and that mainly northern populations of refugia were involved in postglacial recolonization.  相似文献

Summary .  In multicategory classification, standard techniques typically treat all classes equally. This treatment can be problematic when the dataset is unbalanced in the sense that certain classes have very small class proportions compared to others. The minority classes may be ignored or discounted during the classification process due to their small proportions. This can be a serious problem if those minority classes are important. In this article, we study the problem of unbalanced classification and propose new criteria to measure classification accuracy. Moreover, we propose three different weighted learning procedures, two one-step weighted procedures, as well as one adaptive weighted procedure. We demonstrate the advantages of the new procedures, using multicategory support vector machines, through simulated and real datasets. Our results indicate that the proposed methodology can handle unbalanced classification problems effectively.  相似文献

Sexual reproduction in fungi involves either a single individual (selfing) or two individuals (outcrossing). To investigate the roles that these two strategies play in the establishment of an invasive alien pathogen, the Eucalyptus leaf‐infecting fungus, Teratosphaeria (Mycosphaerella) nubilosa was studied. Specifically, the genetic diversity of the pathogen was investigated at micro and macrospatial scales. Interestingly, while data obtained at microspatial scales show clearly that selfing is the main reproductive strategy, at macrospatial scales the population genetic structure was consistent with a genetically outcrossing organism. Additional analyses were performed to explore these apparently discordant results at different spatial scales and to quantify the contribution of selfing vs. outcrossing to the genotypic diversity. The results clearly show that the fungus has a mixed mating strategy. While selfing is the predominant form of mating, outcrosses must have occurred in the pathogen that increased the genotypic diversity of the fungus over time. This mating strategy, coupled with the high levels of geneflow between distant populations of the pathogen, has created an even distribution of maximum diversity from the smallest (leaf) to largest scales (>500 km), which will make breeding for resistance difficult. These data illustrate the evolutionary potential and danger of the introduction of multiple genotypes of a potentially outcrossing pathogen, especially when it has a high dispersal potential.  相似文献

Aim Our objective was to document the general relationship between plant species richness (SR) and above‐ground net primary productivity (ANPP) at different spatial scales and the environmental influence on this relationship. Location Temperate and alpine grasslands of China. Methods We investigated SR and ANPP at 321 field sites (1355 plots) across the widely distributed temperate and alpine grasslands of China. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions were used to test SR–ANPP relationships among site means. Plot‐level data of SR and ANPP were analysed with general linear models (GLMs) and the correlation between SR and ANPP was decomposed into covariance components to test the influence of climatic variables, region, vegetation type and remaining variation among sites on SR, ANPP and their relationship. Results We found positive linear relationships between SR and ANPP among sites in both the alpine and temperate grassland regions and in different grassland vegetation types of these biomes. Environmental gradients such as growing‐season precipitation affected both SR and ANPP in parallel. However, after removing the among‐site environmental variation, residual SR and ANPP were no longer correlated at the pooled within‐site level. Main conclusions The positive SR–ANPP relationship across large‐scale environmental gradients among sites was most likely the result of climatic variables influencing SR and ANPP in parallel. Our results suggest that in China's natural grasslands there is no direct relationship between SR and ANPP, presumably because the pool of available species for local community assembly is large, in contrast to experiments where species pools are artificially reduced.  相似文献

In protogynous plants, female flowers of early blooming plants are at a reproductive disadvantage because they cannot set fruit due to the lack of available pollen. To study this phenomenon, gender expression of the monoecious herb Sagittaria trifolia was investigated over the entire flowering season in two field and two cultivated populations in Hubei and Hunan Provinces, China. In racemes of S. trifolia, flowers open sequentially from bottom to top, with female flowers opening first followed by male flowers. This creates a temporal separation of sexes in the species. Under field conditions small plants are often male, with production of both male and female flowers increasing with plant size. Femaleness increased among sequential inflorescences since female flower production increased whereas male flower production did not. Seed production was greater in large inflorescences because they contain more female flowers, and the number of ovules increased in female flowers at basal positions within the raceme. A consistent pattern of high seed set was observed in flowers from both field and cultivated populations. About 1 % of unfertilized ovules resulted from no pollination and 2 % of the seeds produced were only partly developed due to resource limitation. In the first inflorescence of the six experimental populations, 6.7-40.0 % of individuals produced only male flowers, and female flowers of 1.9-6.5 % individuals were aborted. The occurrence of male flowers in early blooming inflorescences could be an adaptive strategy to conserve resources and enhance pollination of female flowers in protogynous S. trifolia.  相似文献

In order to investigate the regeneration of wild beet (Beta maritima) from inflorescence pieces, the effects of growth regulator, genotype, explant source and stage of plant development on adventitious shoot formation and rooting in vitro and subsequent transplanting in the glasshouse were tested. Inflorescence tips produced more adventitious shoots than sub-apical segments and the best micropropagation was achieved on a Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 1.0 mg l–1 BAP. Addition of auxin was not beneficial. The induction rate of adventitious shoots was genotype-dependent and influenced by the stage of plant development. Adventitious shoots were produced from the base of the flower buds, i.e. from the receptacle, not from axils or stalks and only a few buds on inflorescence tip explants produced adventitious shoots. Rooting was increased by using a MS medium with 3% sucrose supplemented with 1.0 mg l–1 NAA. There was no variation in leaf morphology of the transplants.
