庐山野生观赏植物资源多样性及持续利用对策

庐山是我国著名的风景旅游和避暑胜地,也是我国中亚热带北缘植物多样性的宝库．本文在广泛调查、收集、整理的基础上,研究了庐山野生观赏植物资源多样性特征、分布、类型及其配置．本区分布有野生观赏植物５２８种,隶属于１１５科２９０属,其中乔木类１３８种,灌木类１４０种,藤木类５２种,草本类１９８种．并根据开发与保护现状对庐山野生观赏植物资源多样性的持续利用提出了切实可行的对策．     

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN A FLOWER GALL MIDGE PSEUDAS-PHONDYLIA SP. (DIPTERA: CECIDOMYIIDAE) AND ITS HOST PLANT ACTINIDIA VALVATA*

Abstract Kiwifruit plants, Actinidia sp., are native to subtropical China. The flower-bud gall of A. valvata, which is induced by an undescribed gall midge in the genus Pseud as phond ylia, is valued by the pharmaceutical industry. When studying the biology of the Actinid ia/Pseud as phond ylia interaction in Central-south China we found evidence suggesting that under certain circumstances the gall insect modifies the reproductive mode of the dioecious host plant. Surveys and field experiments in the National Hupingshan Natural Reserve showed a high frequency of galled trees. The density of galled trees varied among valleys and among trees within the valleys. In two valleys, 92% and 75%, respectively, of all trees were attacked, while in a third valley no trees were attacked. When infested, staminate tree only produced galls, whereas pistillate plants produced normal fruits as well as galls. Gall shape differed between male and female trees. Trees with galls tended to produce more fruits than treea without galls. We speculate that this is one of a few documented examples of an insect that induces androdioecy in an otherwise functionally dioecious plant.     

Ammonium uptake in carrot cell structures is influenced by pH-dependent cell aggregation

Semicontinuously grown wild carrot ( Daucus carota L.) cells were used in an investigation of the effect of culture medium pH on ammonium uptake in suspension cultures as a first step in exploring the relationship between pH and anthocyanin biosynthesis. In contrast to published data showing decreasing uptake rates with decreasing culture medium pH, ammonium-limited, semicontinuous carrot cell cultures showed a 25% greater ammonium uptake rate at pH 4.5 than at pH 5.5. When cells that had been grown semicontinuously in medium with a pH of 4.5 or 5.5 were grown in batch cultures at pH 4.5, 5.5 or 6.5 the ammonium uptake rates were those of the semicontinuous cultures, indicating that the pH of the batch culture medium had no effect on ammonium uptake rates over 7 days. The cell culture was composed of very small aggregates when it was grown semicontinuously in medium at pH 4.5, but was composed of large aggregates when it was grown semicontinuously in medium at pH 5.5. The aggregation/disaggregation of the cells was pH dependent, as changing the pH of the semicontinuous culture medium altered the extent of the aggregation. We conclude that the change in culture medium pH caused the cells to aggregate or disaggregate which in turn decreased or increased the rate of ammonium uptake from the medium.     

Analysis of vertical ozone and nitrogen oxides profiles in aPrunus cerasifera canopy

An automatic system was installed for continuous analyses of ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in an experimental orchard with a canopy ofPrunus cerasifera plants in summer 1993. Air samples from three elevations (0.8 m, 1.6 m and 3 m above ground) were sequentially analyzed. Ozone concentrations above the canopy were usually higher than within the canopy; their relationships with stomatal resistance have been investigated. Sulphur dioxide levels were negligible. Nitrogen oxides showed a complex profile, with no particular trend, likely due to a reciprocal exchange between the atmosphere and the ground surface.     

Mitochondrial DNA sequences of various species of the genus Equus with special reference to the phylogenetic relationship between Przewalskii's wild horse and domestic horse

The noncoding region between tRNA^Pro and the large conserved sequence block is the most variable region in the mammalian mitochondrial DNA D-loop region. This variable region (ca. 270 bp) of four species of Equus, including Mongolian and Japanese native domestic horses as well as Przewalskii's (or Mongolian) wild horse, were sequenced. These data were compared with our recently published Thoroughbred horse mitochondrial DNA sequences. The evolutionary rate of this region among the four species of Equus was estimated to be 2–4 × 10^–8 per site per year. Phylogenetic trees of Equus species demonstrate that Przewalskii's wild horse is within the genetic variation among the domestic horse. This suggests that the chromosome number change (probably increase) of the Przewalskii's wild horse occurred rather recently.Correspondence to: N. Ishida     

Population genetic response to microsite ecological stress in wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum

Genetic diversity was studied in six subpopulations (a total of 60 individuals) of wild barley, Hordeum spontaneum , the progenitor of cultivated barley, sampled from six stations located along a transect of 300 m across the two opposing slopes of 'Evolution Canyon', a Mediterranean microsite at Lower Nahal Oren, Mt Carmel. The two opposing slopes are separated by between 100 and 400 m and designated SFS (South-Facing Slope) and NFS (North-Facing Slope) with each having three equidistant test stations. The SFS, which receives up to 300% more solar radiation, is drier, ecologically more heterogeneous, fluctuating, and more stressful than the NFS. Analysis of 12 RAPD primers, representing a total of 51 putative loci, revealed a significant inter- and intraslope variation in RAPD band polymorphism. A significantly higher proportion of polymorphic RAPD loci was found amongst the subpopulations on the SFS (mean P = 0.909) than on the NFS (mean P = 0.682), on the basis of the presence and absence of 22 strong bands. Polymorphism generally increased upwards from the bottom to the top of the SFS (0.636, 0.773, 0.955) and NFS (0.409, 0.500, 0.545), respectively. Gametic phase disequilibria estimates, D, revealed SFS and NFS unique predominant combinations which sharply differentiated the two slopes and indicated that there is differential interslope selection favouring slope-specific multilocus combinations of alleles, or blocks of genes over tens to hundreds of meters. This suggests that selection overrides migration. RAPD polymorphism appears to parallel allozyme diversity which is climatically adaptive and driven by natural selection in the same subpopulations at the microsite.

Biophoton emission

The phenomenon of ultraweak photon emission from living systems was further investigated in order to elucidate the physical properties of this radiation and its possible source. We obtained evidence that the light has a high degree of coherence because of (1) its photon count statistics, (2) its spectral distribution, (3) its decay behavior after exposure to light illumination, and (4) its transparency through optically thick materials. Moroever, DNA is apparently at least an important source, since conformational changes induced with ethidium bromide in vivo are clearly reflected by changes of the photon emission of cells. The physical properties of the radiation are described, taking DNA as an exciplex laser system, where a stable state can be reached far from thermal equilibrium at threshold.     

Elevation of a threonine phospholipid in polyoma virus transformed hamster embryo fibroblasts.

Analysis of the lipids of normal hamster embryo fibroblasts and polyoma virus transformed fibroblasts shows a decrease in phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylethanolamine and a marked increase in a threonine phospholipid after transformation. Transformed cells also react differently with fluorodinitrobenzene and trinitrobenzenesulfonate. phosphatidylethanolamine of transformed cells reacts to a greater extent with both probes. Phosphatidylserine and the threonine phospholipid of both cells do not react with trinitrobenzenesulfonate. The threonine phospholipid is provisionally identified as phosphatidylthreonine.     

Rubidium—A possible essential trace element

The rubidium content of whole blood was estimated by instrumental neutron activation analysis. In 46 healthy children it amounts to {ie193-1} g/g dry weight. There was no difference between the values found for infants, toddlers, and school children. In 29 dietetically treated patients with phenylketonuria and maple-syrup-urine disease the values were significantly lower than in healthy children. During the first three months of diet therapy the rubidium levels remained in the lower range of the normal values, decreasing to about 60% of the mean of normal values later on. With increasing length of diet therapy these values tended to decrease. It remains questionable whether these decreased levels reflect only an induced biochemical phenomenon without biological importance, or whether they are the first signs of a deficiency syndrome.
