Two-year-old red spruce seedlings ( Picea rubens Sarg .) growing in. field chambers were repeatedly exposed to acidic mist with a factorial combination of 3 fluctuating levels of acidity: median pH values of 3.0 (range of 2.5 to 3.5), 3.5 (range of 3.0 to 4.0), and 4.0 (range of 3.5 to 4.5). and 3 ion compositions: sulfate. nitrate and ammonium, and a combination of all 3 ions. The experiment was performed during the growing season over a period of 3.5 months. Mist exposures were intermittent with 5 wet-dry cycles for each 16-h overnight exposure period, Foliar necrosis occurred on seedlings treated with the most acidic mist and was most severe when the mist contained sulfate. At a median pH of 3.5, a value close to that of cloud water occurring in the eastern United States, injury developed with sulfuric acid mist, but not. when the mist contained nitric acid. The combination of high acidity and sulfate significantly decreased volume of aboveground tissues, while high acidity and nitrate increased volume. Root and needle dry weights were not affected. However, high acidity of mist was associated with increased leader shoot length. These results indicate, that there is a risk of foliar injury and changes in growth of red spruce with cloud water at a median acidity of pH 3.5 or below, especially when there are high concentrations of sulfate and low concentrations of nitrate. 相似文献

Summary To explain the decline of Hippopha? scrub in the vegetation succession in the dunes of The Netherlands, the growth and nodulation
of Hippopha? plants grown in pots, using soil from an early stage (site AH) and a post-optimum stage (site HP), were investigated.
In HP-soil nodulation, yield, and the nitrogen and phosphorus content of test plants were always lower and the number of necrotic
nodules and the dry matter content were always higher than in AH-soil, even after inoculation with crushed nodules and the
addition of a nutrient solution. Plants in HP-soil also had darker roots, less root hairs, a higher number of short lateral
roots and a higher percentage of dead roots than those in AH-soil. These characteristics of adverse growth conditions disappeared
upon ignition or gamma-irradiation of HP-soil.
Possible explanations of these results are discussed. The degeneration of Hippopha? scrub cannot be ascribed to the age of
the plants, the absence of sufficient infective endophyte particles or to abiotic factors such as unfavourable physical (particle
size) or chemical soil conditions but is caused by biotic factors. No indications were obtained that plant-pathogenic fungi
and bacteria are involved. HP-soil in contrast to AH-soil, however, contained large numbers of the nematodeLongidorus sp., a species known to cause root deformations. The conclusion was that this nematode is one of the biotic factors involved
in the degeneration of the Hippopha? scrub. This degeneration is due to a restriction of the root system resulting in a low
phosphate uptake, a low nodulation capacity and, as a consequence, a low nitrogen content. The results demonstrate that biotic

In order to investigate the reliability of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer (ICP-AES) for trace
element analysis of biological materials, we have carried out extensive investigations on human plasma, using an Applied Research
Laboratory’s ICP-AES. When we aspirated the untreated plasma into the spectrometer, we obtained unreliable and nonreproducible
results. However, when we pretreated the plasma by wet digestion (to destroy all the organic material), we achieved reproducible
and consistent results. It is, therefore, suggested that biological samples should be pretreated, preferably by wet digestion,

A simple and convenient method has been tested for the steriltzation of nutrient media for long-term cultivation of plant cells. Diethylpyrocarbonate is suitable for this task in concentrations about 1000 mg l-1 The cells cultivated for 15 subsequent passages on media treated by DPC had the same growth parameters, production pattern and ability to transform exogeneous organic compounds as did the controls. The composition of benthic communities is a good criterion to estimate water quality. Is this also true of the wet edaphic riparian invertebrates, less directly exposed to the impact of the water? What abiotic factors determine the distribution of species within a hydrosystem? These questions were addressed, using the River Arc and its hydrographic network, subject to various anthropogenic aggressions (urbanization, industry, agriculture) and offering varied hydrochemical situations. The riparian population (158 taxa) was analysed, using Reciprocal Averaging (9 sampling points on the main course and its tributaries). Results show that spatial variation of the edaphic riparian zoocenosis is chiefly determined by the nature of the substratum and, to a lesser extent, by the hydrologic instability of the water course. However, it can respond to some constraints of the environment like benthic macroinvertebrates. 相似文献

This is the first report of the avian assemblage in the study area of Dutse, Nigeria. In addition to recording bird species, the effects of season, dominant vegetation structure, locality and anthropogenic activities on bird abundance, species richness and diversity were investigated. Using the point transect method, 264 points on 48 km of transect were used to count birds between 06:30 and 11:00 from August 2015 to February 2016. A total of 122 bird species of 41 families were recorded. Highest bird species richness was recorded in Warwade, highest abundance in Model, and highest diversity in Malamawa. The dry season and woodland habitat showed higher bird species richness, abundance and diversity than the wet season and shrubland habitat. Tree density was more important in increasing bird abundance than shrub density. Small-scale anthropogenic activities and habitat modification, such as farming, grazing, wood removal and human interference did not appear to have impacted the birds; however, loss of high tree-density woodland habitats may pose a major threat to the bird community in Dutse. The presence of birds of concern in the area suggests the need for conservation efforts of avifauna and as well as the forested habitats in Dutse. 相似文献
