Many lizards use femoral gland secretions in intraspecific communication. Although there is a consistent interspecific variation in chemical composition of secretions, considerable variation is also often found between populations, which may affect conspecifc recognition and lead to speciation processes. Balearic lizards (Podarcis lilfordi) are currently distributed only in several isolated islets offshore of the main islands with different environmental conditions (vegetation, diet, density of population, etc). Also, there is a high genetic variability between populations. We examined whether there was a similar variation in the composition of the femoral secretions of male lizards, and which could be the causes of such variation. By using GC–MS analyses, we found 75 lipophilic compounds in femoral gland secretions of male P. lilfordi from three representative island populations. Main compounds were steroids (94.4%), mainly cholesterol, but we also found alkanes, ketones, waxy esters, squalene, carboxylic acids and their ethyl esters, alcohols and other minor compounds. However, there were clear differences between populations with respect to the number and relative proportions of compounds. Using the patterns of presence and abundance of compounds in secretions it is possible to predict the population of origin of a lizard. We discuss how these differences could be explained considering genetic and environmental differences between populations.  相似文献

Many lizards use femoral gland secretions in reliable intraspecific communication. Based on mass spectra, obtained by GC–MS, we found 57 lipophilic compounds in femoral secretions of males and females of El Hierro giant lizards, Gallotia simonyi (fam. Lacertidae). Compounds included steroids (mainly cholesterol) and fatty acids ranging between n-C16 and n-C22 (mainly hexadecanoic and octadecanoic acids), followed by aldehydes, alcohols, ketones, squalene and waxy esters. There were important intersexual differences in the presence, abundance and number of compounds (more numerous in males). Males had higher proportions of the most odoriferous compounds (fatty acids and aldehydes), while females had higher proportions of more stable compounds (steroids, waxy alcohols, waxy esters and terpenoids). This suggests sexual differences in function of femoral secretions. In addition, some compounds could reflect the physiological state, allowing monitoring health of lizards from secretions samples, which is especially important given the critical conservation status of this lizard.  相似文献

Sea urchin adoral tube feet are highly specialized organs that have evolved to provide efficient attachment to the substratum. They consist of a disk and a stem that together form a functional unit. Tube foot disk tenacity (adhesive force per unit area) and stem mechanical properties (e.g., stiffness) vary between species but are apparently not correlated with sea urchin taxa or habitats. Moreover, ultrastructural studies of sea urchin disk epidermis pointed out differences in the internal organization of the adhesive secretory granules among species. This prompted us to look for interspecific variability in the composition of echinoid adhesive secretions, which could explain the observed variability in adhesive granule ultrastructure and disk tenacity. Antisera raised against the footprint material of Sphaerechinus granularis (S. granularis) were first used to locate the origin of adhesive footprint constituents in tube feet by taking advantage of the polyclonal character of the generated antibodies. Immunohistochemical assays showed that the antibodies specifically labeled the adhesive secretory cells of the disk epidermis in the tube feet of S. granularis. The antibodies were then used on tube foot histological sections from seven other sea urchin species to shed some light on the variability of their adhesive substances by looking for antibody cross‐reactivity. Surprisingly, no labeling was observed in any of the species tested. These results indicate that unlike the adhesive secretions of asteroids, those of echinoids do not share common epitopes on their constituents and thus would be “species‐specific.” In sea urchins, variations in the composition of adhesive secretions could therefore explain interspecific differences in disk tenacity and in adhesive granule ultrastructure. Bone marrow MSCs (mesenchymal stem cells) can differentiate into various tissue cells, including epithelial cells. This presents interesting possibilities for cellular therapy, but the differentiation efficiency of MSCs is very low. We have explored specific inducing factors to improve the epithelial differentiation efficiency of MSCs. Under inducing conditions, MSCs differentiated into epithelial cells and expressed several airway epithelial markers using RTE (rat tracheal epithelial) cell secretions. Rat cytokine antibody array was used to detect cytokines of the RTE secretion components, in which 32 kinds of protein were found. Seven proteins [TRAIL (tumour necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand), VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), BDNF (brain-derived neurotrophic factor), TGFβ1 (transforming growth factor β1), MMP-2 (metalloproteinases-2), OPN (osteopontin) and activin A in RTE secretions] were assayed using ELISA kits. The four growth factors (VEGF, BDNF, TGFβ1 and activin A) were involved in regulating stem cell growth and differentiation. We speculated that these four play a vital role in the differentiation of MSCs into epithelial cells by triggering appropriate signalling pathways. To induce epithelial differentiation, MSCs were cultured using VEGF, BDNF, TGFβ1 and activin A. Differentiated MSCs were characterized both morphologically and functionally by their capacity to express specific markers for epithelial cells. The data demonstrated that MSCs can differentiate into epithelial cells induced by these growth factors.  相似文献

鲜食糯玉米采后腺苷二磷酸葡萄糖焦磷酸化酶(ADPGPPase)、尿苷二磷酸葡萄糖焦磷酸化酶(UDPGPPase)、束缚态淀粉合成酶(GBSS)、淀粉脱分支酶(DBE)等活性均呈现单峰曲线变化,第1~2天出现峰值然后略有下降;可溶性淀粉合成酶(SSS)活性呈较大幅度上升趋势,活性远高于采收初期;淀粉分支酶(SBE)在第3天出现极高峰值。与20℃贮藏温度相比,采后0℃低温贮藏可增强UDPGPPase活性,促进蔗糖降解;降低SSS和GBSS活性,延缓淀粉合成进程;抑制SBE活性,增强DBE活性,促进直链淀粉生成。  相似文献

目的研究健康妊娠妇女阴道乳酸菌数量及pH的变化与妊娠时间的关系。方法选择20例健康非妊娠妇女,60例健康妊娠妇女(其中早期妊娠、中期妊娠及晚期妊娠各20例)阴道分泌物进行乳酸杆菌数量检测及pH测定,并对乳酸杆菌产生过氧化氢的情况进行检测。结果随着妊娠时间的增加,乳酸杆菌的数量明显增高,伴随阴道分泌物的pH逐渐降低。结论乳酸杆菌与健康妊娠妇女阴道的生物屏障和酸性环境的维持有重要关系。  相似文献

Larvae of the leaf beetle subtribe Chrysomelina sensu stricto repel their enemies by displaying glandular secretions that contain defensive compounds. These repellents can be produced either de novo (iridoids) or by using plant-derived precursors (e.g. salicylaldehyde). The autonomous production of iridoids, as in Phaedon cochleariae, is the ancestral chrysomeline chemical defence and predates the evolution of salicylaldehyde-based defence. Both biosynthesis strategies include an oxidative step of an alcohol intermediate. In salicylaldehyde-producing species, this step is catalysed by salicyl alcohol oxidases (SAOs) of the glucose-methanol-choline (GMC) oxidoreductase superfamily, but the enzyme oxidizing the iridoid precursor is unknown. Here, we show by in vitro as well as in vivo experiments that P. cochleariae also uses an oxidase from the GMC superfamily for defensive purposes. However, our phylogenetic analysis of chrysomeline GMC oxidoreductases revealed that the oxidase of the iridoid pathway originated from a GMC clade different from that of the SAOs. Thus, the evolution of a host-independent chemical defence followed by a shift to a host-dependent chemical defence in chrysomeline beetles coincided with the utilization of genes from different GMC subfamilies. These findings illustrate the importance of the GMC multi-gene family for adaptive processes in plant–insect interactions.  相似文献

The magnocellular division of the medial preoptic area (MPN mag) integrates pheromonal and hormonal signals to play a critical role in the expression of male typical sex behavior. The MPN mag contains two morphologically distinct neuronal populations; the percentage of each type within the nucleus is sex specific. Males have more neurons with a single nucleolus whereas females have more with multiple nucleoli. To determine which neuronal subtype mediates pheromonal induction of copulation, tissue from male and female hamsters exposed to female pheromones was immunolabeled for the immediate early protein (EGR-1). Subsequently the tissue was counterstained and the number of ERG-1 neurons with one or two nuclei was determined. The results indicate that pheromones stimulate neurons with single nucleoli in males but fail to stimulate either neuronal subtype in females suggesting that synaptic input to the MPN mag is sexually differentiated.  相似文献
