Several studies have indicated that in birds breathing frequency ( f , breaths min−1 ) scales to the −1/3 of body weight ( W , kg); this is different from the −1/4 of mammals. We wondered if this discrepancy was due to the peculiar scaling pattern of aquatic birds, as is the case of aquatic mammals. In fact, we had noted previously that the allometric scaling of f differs considerably between aquatic and terrestrial mammals, respectively, W −0.42 and W −0.25 . Measurements of f were obtained in 48 aquatic birds of 22 species and in 35 terrestrial birds of 27 species, during resting conditions on land. Additional data from 11 aquatic and 14 terrestrial species, different from the ones measured, were obtained from the literature. The allometric curve of all species combined (terrestrial and aquatic, n =74) was f =13.3 W −0.36 , similar to what is reported in previous studies. However, the allometric curve of the aquatic species ( n =33, f =14.5 W −0.56 ) differed greatly ( P <0.001) from that of the terrestrial species ( n =41, f =13.4 W −0.26 ). On average, f of aquatic birds of the 3–5 kg range was 63%, and that of birds of larger size was 57%, of the values of terrestrial birds of similar W . We conclude that, as in mammals, also in terrestrial birds f scales to the −1/4 exponent of W . The similarity of the scaling patterns of f between aquatic birds and mammals suggests a common breathing adaptation to life in the aquatic environment irrespective of phylogenetic relations. 相似文献

The Mediterranean basin is an area of high diversity and endemicity, but the age and origin of its fauna are still largely unknown. Here we use species-level phylogenies based on approximately 1300 base pairs of the genes 16S rRNA and cytochrome oxidase I to establish the relationships of 27 of the 34 endemic Iberian species of diving beetles in the family Dytiscidae, and to investigate their level of divergence. Using a molecular clock approach, 18-19 of these species were estimated to be of Pleistocene origin, with four to six of them from the Late Pleistocene ( approximately 100 000 years). A second, lower speciation frequency peak was assigned to Late Miocene or Early Pliocene. Analysis of the distributional ranges showed that endemic species placed in the tip nodes of the trees are significantly more likely to be allopatric with their sisters than endemic species at lower node levels. Allopatric sister species are also significantly younger than sympatric clades, in agreement with an allopatric mode of speciation and limited subsequent range movement. These results strongly suggest that for some taxa Iberian populations were isolated during the Pleistocene long enough to speciate, and apparently did not expand their ranges to recolonize areas north of the Pyrenees. This is in contradiction to observations from fossil beetles in areas further north, which document large range movements associated with the Pleistocene glacial cycles hypothesized to suppress population isolation and allopatric speciation. 相似文献

Dives of a 12-m sperm whale ( Physeter catodon Linnaeus, 1758) were tracked in the southeast Caribbean by long range, 30 MHz radio tag with dive-profile telemetry over 4.6 d, 26 April-1 May 1995. Over the 295-km track, average speed was 0.7 m/sec (2.6 km/h). Of 158 dives (defined as submergences longer than 3 min), 65 were shallow (<200 m). The 93 deep dives averaged 990 m (range 420–1,330 m) in depth, and 44.4 min in duration (range 18.2–65.3 min). Water depth was at least 200 m deeper than the whale dive depth. The whale was engaged in activities at or near the surface, shallow dives, and deep dives during 22.6%, 23.4%, and 54% of the time, respectively. Depth and duration of dives were correlated, but there was little relationship between the length or depth of dives with the duration of surfacings either before or after dives. Deep dives occurred day and night. In 44.4% of the deep dives, the vertical movement of descents and ascents was interrupted at intermediate depths, lengthening these dives by an average of 10.8 min. During dives without stops at intermediate depths, descents averaged 11 min at 1.52 m/sec, and ascents averaged 11.8 min at 1.4 m/sec. 相似文献

A quantitative study, based on monthly samples taken by divers with 0.1m2 quadrats, was conducted on a benthic community settling coarse sediments in an area exposed to strong water currents.The richness of the community was high both in terms of biomass (270±107 g m–2 in ash-free dry weight) and diversity (ten zoologicals groups for a total of 98 species). Three suspension feeding species were dominant: Ophiothrix fragilis, Urticina felina and Alcyonium digitatum accounted for more than 95% of the total biomass at all sampling periods.Spatial heterogeneity analysis confirmed the role of these three dominant species. Heterogeneity revealed at a scale of 0.1 m2 by dendrograms (qualitative similarity index) or by Factor Correspondence Analysis (FCA) (on biomasses) was due to the strong dispersion of rare species.The influence of the observation scale was visualised by building Rank-Frequency Diagrams using progressively aggregated replicates. The distribution of relative biomasses and the rank of the dominant species always stabilized at scale of 0.4 or 0.5 m2.The three dominant species were overdispersed at a scale of 0.1 m2 compared with a Poisson distribution. Spatial competition among the three species was suggested by their dispersion in the plane of the FCA. Calculation of a multiple linear regression (at the scale of 0.8 m2) showed negative relationships among these dominant species.Temporal homogeneity was indicated (at a scale of 0.8 m2) by dendrograms of species similarities among samples and by FCA performed on total biomasses. 相似文献

The Cape cormorant Phalacrocorax capensis is unusual among cormorants in using aerial searching to locate patchily distributed pelagic schooling fish. It feeds up to 80 km offshore, often roosts at sea during the day and retains more air in its plumage and is more buoyant than most other cormorants. Despite these adaptations to its pelagic lifestyle, little is known of its foraging ecology. We measured the activity budget and diving ecology of breeding Cape cormorants. All foraging took place during the day, with 3.6 ± 1.3 foraging trips per day, each lasting 85 ± 60 min and comprising 61 ± 53 dives. Dives lasted 21.2 ± 13.9 s (maximum 70 s), attaining an average depth of 10.2 ± 6.7 m (maximum 34 m), but variability in dive depth both within and between foraging trips was considerable. The within-bout variation in dive depth was greater when making shallow dives, suggesting that pelagic prey were targeted mainly when diving to <10 m. Diving ecology and total foraging time were similar to other cormorants, but the time spent flying (122 ± 51 min day−1 , 14% of daylight) was greater and more variable than other species. Searching flights lasted up to 1 h, and birds made numerous short flights during foraging bouts, presumably following fast-moving schools of pelagic prey. Compared with the other main seabird predators of pelagic fish in the Benguela region, Cape gannets Morus capensis and African penguins Spheniscus demersus , Cape cormorants made shorter, more frequent foraging trips. Their foraging range while feeding small chicks was 7 ± 6 km (maximum 40 km), similar to penguins (10–20 km), but less than gannets (50–200 km). 1. Anopheline larvae are surface feeders and allocate most of their time to search for food at the water surface. However, species of the Anopheles gambiae Giles complex may also show bottom feeding. The consequences of this foraging tactic for life history are unknown, yet may be relevant to understand inter‐specific competition patterns. 2. The diving ability and activity of larvae of the main African malaria vectors, An. coluzzii and An. gambiae, at two different water depths (14 and 30 cm) were assessed. We further explored the biological relevance of diving for food harvesting by monitoring key life history traits in two species treatments (single or mixed species) and two food treatments (surface or bottom feeding). 3. Overall, An. coluzzii larvae showed more diving activity than An. gambiae. When feeding at the bottom both species, and especially An. gambiae, showed a delayed emergence and a reduced emergence rate. Moreover, An. gambiae also suffered a reduced wing length. 4. Mixed‐species rearing had a detrimental effect on the life history traits of An. gambiae but not on An. coluzzii, suggesting a competitive advantage for the latter in our experimental conditions. 5. The present results confirm that anopheline larvae are able to forage for food at the bottom of their breeding site and that An. coluzzii shows a superior diving activity than An. gambiae and this at a lower cost. These behavioural differences probably reflect specific adaptations to different aquatic habitats, and may be important in shaping species distributions and the population biology of these important vector mosquitoes. 相似文献

1. Identifying the spatial scales at which top marine predators forage is important for understanding oceanic ecosystems. Several methods quantify how individuals concentrate their search effort along a given path. Among these, First-Passage Time (FPT) analysis is particularly useful to identify transitions in movement patterns (e.g. between searching and feeding). This method has mainly been applied to terrestrial animals or flying seabirds that have little or no vertical component to their foraging, so we examined the differences between classic FPT and a modification of this approach using the time spent at the bottom of a dive for characterizing the foraging activity of a diving predator: the southern elephant seal. 2. Satellite relayed data loggers were deployed on 20 individuals during three successive summers at the Kerguelen Islands, providing a total of 72 978 dives from eight juvenile males and nine adult females. 3. Spatial scales identified using the time spent at the bottom of a dive ( = 68.2 +/- 42.1 km) were smaller than those obtained by the classic FPT analysis ( = 104.7 +/- 67.3 km). Moreover, foraging areas identified using the new approach clearly overlapped areas where individuals increased their body condition, indicating that it accurately reflected the foraging activity of the seals. 4. These results suggest that incorporating the vertical dimension into FPT provides a different result to the surface path alone. Close to the Antarctic continent, within the pack-ice, sinuosity of the path could be explained by a high sea-ice concentration (restricting elephant seal movements), and was not necessarily related to foraging activity. 5. Our approach distinguished between actual foraging activity and changes in behaviour induced by the physical environment like sea ice, and could be applied to other diving predators. Cannibalism among starved groups of juvenile (19–48 days old) vundu catfish Heterobranchus longifilis was 66·5% nocturnal, and its impact under modified day length was proportional to the duration of the dark phase. Shallow depth and high population density decreased the intensity of cannibalism, whereas low density and deeper environments had an opposite effect. The presence of refuges had no significant effect on cannibalism. The maintenance ( R maint ) and maximum ( R max ) daily food rations (% day−1 ) of cannibals feeding on live prey were modelled as R maint =3·899 W C 0·327 ( r 2 =0·684; d.f.=31), and R max =49.545 W C 0·321 ( r 2 =0·999; d.f.=5), where W C was the body weight of the cannibal (g). The latter model indicated that the impact of a cannibal on a population decreased by a 20% margin each time the cannibal doubled its body weight, and suggested that cannibalism among vundu would become insignificant for cannibals heavier than 30 g. The significance of these findings is discussed within the contexts of vundu aquaculture and of general, conceptual models of the dynamics of cannibalism among fishes. 相似文献

Some writers have argued that a Kantian approach to ethics can be used to justify suicide in cases of extreme dementia, where a patient lacks the rationality required of Kantian moral agents. I worry that this line of thinking may lead to the more extreme claim that euthanasia is a proper Kantian response to severe dementia (and similar afflictions). Such morally treacherous thinking seems to be directly implied by the arguments that lead Dennis Cooley and similar writers to claim that Kant might support suicide. If rationality is the only factor in valuing a human life, then the loss of that rationality (however such loss might be defined) would allow us to use essentially utilitarian thinking in order to support non-voluntary euthanasia, since the patients themselves would no longer be moral agents that demand respect. 相似文献
