A nine-day acoustic and visual survey was conducted off the West Indies in March 1994 to study the pulse trains that were detected on SOSUS arrays throughout winter in deep water between the West Indies and Bermuda. During the survey, pulse train sounds were consistently recorded in an area 190–350 km northeast of Puerto Rico. Vocalizing animals were never visually observed, but visual sighting conditions were often poor and observation height was low. Pulse trains occurred in two basic forms. The "speed-up" pulse train was characterized by an accelerating series of pulses with energy in the 200–400 Hz band, with individual pulses lasting 40-60 msec. Speedup pulse trains started with average pulse rates of 1.5 pulses/sec, lasted 43.7 ± 6.0 sec, and ended with average pulse rates of 2.8 pulses/sec. The less common "slow-down" pulse train was characterized by a decelerating series of pulses with energy in the 250-350 Hz band. Slow-down pulse trains started at pulse rates averaging 4.5 pulses/sec, lasted 60.9 ± 5.8 sec, and ended with average pulse rates of 2.9 pulses/sec. We believe the recorded pulse trains are from minke whales based on careful reanalysis of, and comparison to, minke whale pulse-train sounds recorded in the Caribbean by Winn and Perkins (1976).  相似文献

The eye of the bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) contains a retinal tapetum composed of guanine. The total amount of the guanine in one eye of the fish (SL=120 cm) was about 88.6 mg. The mean guanine content of the tapetum was approximately 1.25 mg/cm2 of the retinal surface. The highest content of guanine (2.15 mg/cm2) was observed only in the ventro-temporal part of the retina. To distinguish this area from the rest of the eye, we suggested the term ‘locus tapetalis’ for it. The visual accommodation system clearly indicated that the visual axis of the fish is upper-forward and the resulting retinal area for acute vision was suggested to be in the ventro-temporal retina. We discussed that the area centralis of the bigeye tuna may have two functions: to guarantee high visual acuity and to allow for high photo-sensitivity in dim light vision.  相似文献

Sensory bias, a predisposition towards certain signals, has been implicated in the origin of mate preferences in some species. A risk associated with these biases is that they can be co-opted by predators as sensory lures. Here we propose that the orange spots on the brown pincers of a diurnal, predatory species of prawn function as lures for Trinidadian guppies, which have a sensory bias for orange. We exposed female guppies to (i) a life-like model of this Trinidadian prawn with orange, green or no spots on the pincers or (ii) a live, novel (non-Trinidadian) crustacean (crayfish), also with spotted pincers. First, we provide evidence that guppies sympatric with the prawn recognized our model as a potential predator. Next, we found that guppies spent more time in the dangerous head region of the model prawn with orange-spotted pincers compared with unspotted pincers. Finally, we show that allopatric, but not sympatric, guppies spent more time in the vicinity of the head of a live crayfish when orange spots were added to its pincers than when brown spots were added. Our results suggest that the orange spots on prawn pincers can act as a sensory lure.  相似文献

Evidence suggests that the hyperammonemia(HA)-induced neuroinflammation and alterations in the serotonin(5-HT)system may contribute to cognitive decline and anxiety disorder during hepatic encephalopathy(HE).Probiotics that maintain immune system homeostasis and regulate the 5-HT system may be potential treatment for HA-mediated neurological disorders in HE.In this study,we tested the efficacy of probiotic Lactobacillus helveticus strain NS8 in preventing cognitive decline and anxiety-like behavior in HA rats.Chronic HA was induced by intraperitoneal injection of ammonium acetate for four weeks in male Sprague-Dawley rats.HA rats were then given Lactobacillus helveticus strain NS8(109 CFU mL?1)in drinking water as a daily supplementation.The Morris water maze task assessed cognitive function,and the elevated plus maze test evaluated anxiety-like behavior.Neuroinflammation was assessed by measuring the inflammatory markers:inducible nitric oxide synthase,prostaglandin E2,and interleukin-1βin the brain.5-HT system activity was evaluated by measuring 5-HT and its metabolite,5-HIAA,and the 5-HT precursor,tryptophan.Probiotic treatment of HA rats significantly reduced the level of inflammatory markers,decreased 5-HT metabolism,restored cognitive function and improved anxiety-like behavior.These results indicate that probiotic L.helveticus strain NS8 is beneficial for the treatment of cognitive decline and anxiety-like behavior in HA rats.  相似文献

Humans as social beings often have to perform complex social cognitive tasks while under stress (e.g., during a social conflict). Previous research has established that the brain regions responsible for social cognitive tasks are target regions for stress hormones. However, little experimental research has been done testing the acute effects of stress on social cognition. Here, we investigated whether stress exposure and the ensuing glucocorticoid (i.e., cortisol) elevations affect social cognition. Thirty-two men and 32 women were exposed to either a psychosocial stress or a non-stressful control test before assessing their social cognition using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) and the Movie for the Assessment of Social Cognition (MASC). Results showed differential effects of stress-induced cortisol responses among men and women for the MASC, but not the RMET. Among men, high cortisol responders displayed elevated MASC scores compared with low cortisol responders. Moreover, for stressed men a positive association between the magnitude of the cortisol responses to the stressor and MASC scores emerged. Among women, enhanced MASC scores were found for low cortisol responders relative to high cortisol responders and non-stressed controls. A strong negative association between cortisol reactivity and MASC scores was found among women. These results imply sex specific effects of glucocorticoids on social cognition and partially support the idea of sex differences in biobehavioral stress responses, with men engaging in fight-or-flight responses while women may react to stress with tending and befriending behavior.  相似文献

Visual responses of adult male and female Colorado potato beetles CPB, Leptinotarsa decemlineata (Say) (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) to 10 × 20 cm coloured paper‐boards, beetle‐sized coloured beads or dead CPB, and to combinations of these in laboratory experiments in an arena of 52 cm diameter were investigated. In addition, visual discriminatory abilities of males exposed to female‐specific substances were also measured. The paths of the beetles were recorded on videotape by a computer‐aided motion detection system. Parameters of tracks were calculated and the tape‐recorded paths were further processed for behavioural analyses and for obtaining mean angular directions by circular statistics. Both sexes showed a strong preference for yellow‐black striped, yellow and light‐green boards and, to a lesser degree, were also attracted to yellow‐green, dark‐green, red and white boards, to beetle‐sized beads coloured either black or yellow‐black striped, and to some combinations of these. Males exposed to female substances immediately prior to entering the arena performed significantly more successful approaches to objects than did males of the control group. These results corroborate field observations on males' mate‐searching behaviour and increase our understanding of natural host‐ and mate‐finding processes.  相似文献

The sensory forebrain is composed of intricately connected cell types, of which functional properties have yet to be fully elucidated. Understanding the interactions of these forebrain circuits has been aided recently by the development of optogenetic methods for light-mediated modulation of neuronal activity. Here, we describe a protocol for examining the functional organization of forebrain circuits in vitro using laser-scanning photostimulation of channelrhodopsin, expressed optogenetically via viral-mediated transfection. This approach also exploits the utility of cre-lox recombination in transgenic mice to target expression in specific neuronal cell types. Following transfection, neurons are physiologically recorded in slice preparations using whole-cell patch clamp to measure their evoked responses to laser-scanning photostimulation of channelrhodopsin expressing fibers. This approach enables an assessment of functional topography and synaptic properties. Morphological correlates can be obtained by imaging the neuroanatomical expression of channelrhodopsin expressing fibers using confocal microscopy of the live slice or post-fixed tissue. These methods enable functional investigations of forebrain circuits that expand upon more conventional approaches.  相似文献

The use and manufacture of tools have been considered to be cognitively demanding and thus a possible driving factor in the evolution of intelligence. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that enhanced physical cognitive abilities evolved in conjunction with the use of tools, by comparing the performance of naturally tool-using and non-tool-using species in a suite of physical and general learning tasks. We predicted that the habitually tool-using species, New Caledonian crows and Galápagos woodpecker finches, should outperform their non-tool-using relatives, the small tree finches and the carrion crows in a physical problem but not in general learning tasks. We only found a divergence in the predicted direction for corvids. That only one of our comparisons supports the predictions under this hypothesis might be attributable to different complexities of tool-use in the two tool-using species. A critical evaluation is offered of the conceptual and methodological problems inherent in comparative studies on tool-related cognitive abilities.  相似文献
