Abstract. The topic of tissue and organ regeneration has been of interest to life scientists ever since the phenomenon was noticed. The reason for this is obvious: if one can learn what drives and controls regeneration, i.e., how lost or damaged structures can be replaced, one not only has a better chance to understand an animal's embryogenesis and evolutionary relationship with other taxa, but one would also be in a better position to treat organ loss or tissue damage in humans. In this context, the possible restitution of individual sensory neurons or nerve projections has been of special interest to us. We identified central visual projections in several gastropod species and found that: (1) projections are very extensive across the brain and (2) they have connections with other systems and organs (including, most likely, non-ocular skin photoreceptors) that may be involved in the integration of signals from different sensors. Investigations of afferent and efferent visual elements at a morphological level should help reveal the neuronal basis of a gastropod's behavioral reactions.  相似文献

Eggshell colouration is thought to function as a female-specific secondary sexual trait. While tests of this idea are rapidly accumulating in cavity-nesting birds, some fundamental underlying assumptions remain rarely investigated: namely, can males see eggshell coloration and perceive colour differences between the eggs of different females? We tested these two key assumptions in a natural population of blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus). Using transponders, we tracked male nest visits and found that all males visited their nest-boxes while eggs were present and often visually accessible. Interestingly, some males also visited neighbouring nests. We then tested whether birds could detect eggshell coloration using models of avian colour vision; models were performed with and without limitations on visual performance owing to dim light. Both models found that differences in eggshell brightness were often easier to discriminate than differences in colour; there was more contrast in white eggshell background between clutches than within and its contrast against nest background was repeatable within clutches, suggesting these features could act as signals. Yet, the detectability of these contrasts depended entirely on model assumptions of visual limitations. Consequently, we need a better understanding of underlying visual mechanisms in dim-light environments and behavioural discrimination experiments before confirming the signalling potential of eggshell coloration.  相似文献

Gaze cues are used as an index of social cognition in primates, yet the sensitivity to different forms of gaze, and consequently the cues required to test gaze-following abilities remain understudied. Whereas the eye is attributed special signal value in humans, the camouflaged ocular morphology of non-human primates has led to the consensus that head orientation may be a more salient cue. This study presents the first documentation of the surface eye movements of the chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes, in order to determine the behavioral forms of eye-gaze and their saliency as signals, document their functional variation, and address the signal value of the eyes distinct from head orientation. Movements of the eye were identified as Scan (continuous movement), Glance (a single movement <1 sec), or Fixate (no movement). Scans, glances, and fixations were reliably detected by humans during live observation and from video (Cohen's kappa over 0.70) and, therefore, are likely also to be detected by conspecifics. Eye-gaze comprised a nonunitary measure of visual attention, reflecting the attentional task demands of different activities. Specifically, chimpanzees spent significantly more time scanning while feeding and resting, than grooming, F(2,28) = 10.23, P<0.001, and spent significantly more time fixating while grooming, than feeding or resting, F(2,28) = 7.52, P<0.01. Further, eye-gaze was often incongruent with head movement, varying significantly with the form of eye-gaze: incongruence was found during 12-21% of fixations, during 42-49% of scans, and during 70-100% of glances, F(2,16) = 30.17, P<0.001. These findings provide the basis for discrimination of the adaptive significance of gaze-processing abilities with emphasis on sensitivity to eye-gaze distinct from head orientation. If we are to continue exploring gaze-processing abilities in primates, then we need greater consideration of the precise nature of the signals themselves. Here we present evidence for special consideration of the eyes as a salient signal in P. troglodytes.  相似文献

Myrmarachne assimilis, an ant-like (myrmecomorphic) jumping spider (Araneae, Salticidae) from the Philippines, is a Batesian mimic of Oecophylla smaragdina, the Asian weaver ant. Salticids are well known for their acute eyesight and the elaborate vision-based display behaviour they adopt during encounters with conspecific individuals, but most salticids are not myrmecomorphic. Despite its unusual morphology, M. assimilis adopts display behaviour during intraspecific interactions that is similar to the display behaviour of more typical salticids. The specificity with which M. assimilis deploys display behaviour is investigated and provides insights into this mimic’s ability to differentiate, by sight alone, between models, conspecific individuals and prey. During each standardized test, an adult M. assimilis female was in a large cage along with a small transparent glass vial, a stimulus animal being enclosed in the vial such that potential optical cues, but not potential chemical cues, were available to the tested M. assimilis individual. Depending on the test, the stimulus animal was another adult M. assimilis female, a house fly (prey) or an ant (Camponotus sp. or O. smaragdina). Only the conspecific female consistently elicited display from M. assimilis, implying that M. assimilis is a Batesian mimic that can, when relying on vision alone, discriminate between conspecific individuals, models and prey.
