Objective: This work aimed to study the effect of temperature in variation of fatty acid profiles of virgin olive oil (VOO) and to evaluate the impact of the consumption of this thermo oxidized VOO on metabolic oxidative stress.

Materials and methods: Effect of consumption of fresh or thermo-oxidized VOO on rabbits was studied. The animals were distributed in groups of six rabbits each and were fed for four weeks with the incorporation of 15% VOO either fresh or heated during one, two, three or four hours. The liver was examined for the level of reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and activity malondialdehyde (MDA).

Results: The diet of VOO heated for three and four hours resulted in a significant increase (p?<?0.01) in liver of MDA and GST compared to the control group. The results also showed a significant decrease in GSH levels and CAT activity induced in rabbits of the group treated with VOO heated for three and four hours.

Conclusions: The consumption of thermo-oxidized VOO is more dangerous to health than the consumption of fresh olive oil or low oxidation value VOO.  相似文献

Soils in the tree nurseries studied were characterized by a lower species diversity of fungi than adjacent virgin soils. In particular, the relative abundances of representatives of the genera Mucor, Chaetomium, and Trichoderma in the nursery soil were two times lower than in adjacent virgin soils. On the other hand, the nursery soil exhibited greater abundances of fungi of the genus Fusarium, which are causative agents of many diseases of conifer seedlings. To appreciate the efficiency of biocontrol of the infectious diseases of conifer seedlings, we introduced several indigenous Trichoderma strains into the nursery soil and found that this affected the species composition of soil microflora considerably. Changes in the species composition of mycobiota beneficially influenced the phytosanitary state of soils and reduced the infectious lodging of conifer seedlings.  相似文献

The ability to care for the young is innate and readily displayed by postpartum females after delivery to ensure offspring survival. Upon pup exposure, rodent virgin (nulliparous) females also develop parental behavior that over time becomes displayed at levels equivalent to parenting mothers. Although maternal behavior in postpartum females and the associated neurocircuits are well characterized, the neural mechanisms underlying the acquisition of maternal behavior without prior experience remain poorly understood. Here, we show that the development of maternal care behavior in response to first‐time pup exposure in virgin females is initiated by the activation of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). ACC activity is dependent on feedback excitation by Vglut2+/Galanin+ neurons of the centrolateral nucleus of the thalamus (CL), with their activity sufficient to display parenting behaviors. Accordingly, acute bidirectional chemogenetic manipulation of neuronal activity in the ACC facilitates or impairs the attainment of maternal behavior, exclusively in virgin females. These results reveal an ACC‐CL neurocircuit as an accessory loop in virgin females for the initiation of maternal care upon first‐time exposure to pups.  相似文献

The concept of an optimum yield at intermediate levels of fishing (the so called maximum sustainable yield or MSY) has been with us since the 1930s and is now enshrined in legislation as a key objective of fisheries management. The concept seems intuitively reasonable and is readily applicable to a single stock treated in isolation and assuming a constant environment. However, translating this concept into a mixed and multispecies fishery, where there are complex trade-offs between fleets and stocks and in general no simple optimum solution, has been problematic. Here I introduce a framework for thinking about multispecies MSY in terms of an integrated risk of stock depletion and expected long-term yield. Within this framework I consider the performance of a set of simple harvest control rules based upon a single-limit fishing mortality rate (F) which is common to all stocks and a target biomass which is a set fraction of a stock's virgin biomass. Using a multispecies management strategy evaluation, I compare expected outcomes for a set of these harvest control rules with alternative scenarios, in which each stock has its own F based on the assessment process. I find that the simple framework can produce outcomes that are similar to those from the more sophisticated estimates of F. I therefore conclude that achieving multispecies MSY may depend more upon setting reasonable biomass targets and faithfully applying a harvest control rule approach rather than determining the best possible Fs for each stock.  相似文献

In species without obvious aggression, individuals may still vary in how likely they are to initiate contact with a conspecific. In the parasitoid wasp Spalangia endius, who was more likely to initiate contact during pair wise interactions depended on sex and mating status. Specifically, more contacts between the sexes were initiated by the male than by the female both when the female was still virgin and when the female had already mated with a different male. After a male mated with a given female, he still sometimes initiated contacts with her, but no longer more often than she did. A male was more likely to initiate contact when he was with a female than when he was with another male, and he was more likely to retreat from a mated female than from a male.  相似文献

Abstract.  The secretion from the mandibular glands of males of the leaf-cutting ant Atta sexdens rubropilosa is responsible for the reaction of workers outside the nest at the time of sexual swarming. Workers respond with excitability and aggression when presented with the natural mixture of 4-methyl-3-heptanol and 4-methyl-3-heptanone, which is contained in the secretion of the male mandibular glands. Workers respond quickly to fractional amounts of one male equivalent. 4-Methyl-3-heptanone, from the virgin female mandibular glands causes much less response in workers, whereas an equimolar mixture of male and female pheromones gives a still less clear response. The male pheromone plays the most important part in the communication of workers outside the nest at this time.  相似文献

Fat frying is a popular food preparation method but several components like antioxidant vitamins could be lost due to oxidation and some others with toxic effects could appear. Because of such large consumption of frying oils, the effect of high temperatures on the oils is of major concern both for product quality and nutrition, taking into account that dietary fat source deeply influences several biochemical parameters, especially of mitochondrial membranes. Virgin olive oil possesses specific features for modulating the damages occurred by endogenous and exogenous oxidative stress being particularly rich in antioxidant molecules. We evaluated the extent of modifications suffered by virgin olive oil following a short-time deep fat frying procedure: vitamin E and phenolic compound as well as total antioxidant capacity (measured by ESR) decreased, while polar compounds increased. The intake of such an altered oil mainly affected the hydroperoxide and TBARS contents of mitochondrial membranes which were enhanced after the dietary treatments. Also, several mitochondrial respiratory chain components (Coenzyme Q, cytochrome b, c + c 1, and a + a 3) were affected.  相似文献

Once inseminated, ant queens rapidly shed their wings and start to lay eggs. Here we test whether there is a causal link between dealation and oviposition in the ant Lasius niger. We show that artificially dealated virgin queens start to lay eggs shortly after wing removal, whereas winged virgin queens hardly ever lay eggs. Dealate virgins do, however, produce fewer eggs than mated queens. These findings indicate that dealation does induce egg-laying, and that other factors, such as mating and/or insemination, further stimulate oviposition under natural conditions. Lowering high cholesterol concentration decreases the probability of atherosclerotic-related pathology onset. MUFA and PUFA decrease total plasma and LDL cholesterol but PUFA may increase the susceptibility of LDL to undergo oxidative modifications thus becoming more atherogenetic. Olive oil, the predominant fat source in Mediterranean diet, may combine the advantages of both lowering cholesterol level and decreasing LDL susceptibility to oxidation. We studied the effects of feeding MUFA vs PUFA enriched diet on LDL composition and feature in hypercholesterolemic (IIb) patients Antioxidant values remained constant during the study while LDL fatty acids composition reflected the dietary intake: MUFA concentration increased 11% whereas PUFA decreased 10% after olive oil diet (p < 0.05). PUFA/MUFA ratio and the unsaturation index were lower at the end of MUFA-enriched diet. The challenge, in vitro, of oleate-enriched LDL with Cu2+ yielded to lower lag-phase (p < 0.05) in diene conjugated production; the same LDL gave lower lipid hydroperoxide contents after exposition to AAPH. We conclude that oleate-enriched LDL and with lower PUFA content were more resistant to oxidative modifications, as measured by different peroxidation indexes. This feature acquired with the diet may be an useful tool for lowering LDL oxidation and indirectly their atherogenicity.  相似文献

Over the last 10 years, the use of nets to protect pome fruit from hailstorms has increased. In this study, we investigated the effect of these nets on the behavior of the codling moth, Cydia pomonella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), a major pest of apple, Malus domestica Borkh. (Rosaceae). Experiments were carried out in net‐covered and uncovered apple orchards treated with conventional insecticides. The number of codling moth males caught in pheromone‐ and virgin female‐baited traps was significantly reduced in net‐covered compared to uncovered plots. In addition, inhibition of mating by the net was demonstrated by significant reductions in mating of tethered virgin females. Fruit injury was consistently lower in net‐covered plots vs. uncovered plots. Because of the reductions in male trap catch, the reduced female mating frequency, and the lower level of damage, we conclude that flat anti‐hail nets have a disruptive effect on the reproductive behavior of the codling moth.  相似文献
