Plant mating systems are known to vary within species and some immediate ecological factors have been found to be associated with the geographic distribution of selfing. The environmental condition of the maternal plant may influence the production of selfed seed relative to outcrossed seed. This study investigated the effect of late pollination on the mating system of Kalmia latifolia, a long-lived perennial shrub. A 2 × 2 experimental design was used to determine whether reproductive success declines over the course of the flowering season and whether there was an interaction between pollination time (early vs. late in the season) and pollen type (self-fertilized vs. outcrossed). An interaction of this sort would indicate context-dependent fitness of selfed seeds compared to outcrossed seeds and, thus, show an ecological influence over a plant's mating system. Relative fitness was assessed in terms of female reproductive success. Timing of pollination did not affect abortion of outcrossed seeds; however, delay in pollination increased abortion of selfed seeds by 34.7%. Thus, it appears that plants selectively aborted selfed seeds rather than outcrossed seeds and this selection was more intense at the end of the season. An ecological factor such as time of pollination may affect the mating system of K. latifolia.  相似文献

The amount of light intercepted by vertically oriented, shingle leaves of juvenile Monstera tenuis vines growing in forest understory was compared to the amount of light the leaves would intercept if they were horizontal. Light levels were monitored using quantum sensors and hemispherical photography. Shingle leaves absorb less light than they would if the leaves were horizontal at the same positions, and the difference increases with height in the forest. Modeling based on measured photosynthetic light responses and light interception suggests that at 1 m height, 75% more carbon could be gained if leaves were horizontal instead of vertical. Because the vertical leaf orientation reduces light interception, other selective factors are likely of greater importance in favoring the evolution of the shingle-leaved growth form.  相似文献

The effects of isolation on primary succession are poorly documented. I monitored vegetation recovery on two Mount St. Helens lahars (mud flows) with different degrees of isolation using contiguous plots. Seventeen years after the eruption, species richness was stable, but cover continued to increase. That isolation affects community structure was confirmed in several ways. The dominance hierarchies of the lahars differed sharply. Detrended correspondence analysis on Lahar I showed a trend related to distance from an adjacent woodland, whereas vegetation on Lahar II was relatively homogeneous. Spectra of growth forms and dispersal types also differed. Lahar I was dominated by species with modest dispersal ability, while Lahar II was dominated by species with better dispersal. Variation between plots should decline through time, a prediction confirmed on Lahar II. Lahar I remained heterogeneous despite having developed significantly higher cover. Here, the increasing distance from the forest has prevented plots from becoming more homogeneous. At this stage of early primary succession, neither lahar is converging towards the species composition of adjacent vegetation. This study shows that isolation and differential dispersal ability combine to determine initial vegetation structure. Stochastic effects resulting from dispersal limitations may resist the more deterministic effects of competition that could lead to floristic convergence.  相似文献

1. Mass losses and nutrient losses from fresh roadside cuttings were studied in the field during a 6-week period. Large amounts (over 50%) appear to be lost from the cuttings. The losses were positively related to initial nutrient concentrations during this short-term study. Mass and nitrogen losses were best explained by the initial C:N ratio, phosphorus and potassium losses by the initial phosphorus concentration.
2. For potassium the losses were particularly large (up to 90%). For this element only, the observed relationship between loss rate and initial chemical composition could not be established significantly. It is concluded that potassium is mainly lost by leaching whereas the major nitrogen, phosphorus and mass losses are most probably caused by rapid microbial decomposition of readily soluble substances.
3. Using existing data on chemical composition of other roadside cuttings, nutrient losses after different hay removal delay times were modelled for different plant communities. All or most of the losses were assumed to return to the soil system.
4. When soil impoverishment is aimed for, cuttings should be removed within 1 or 2 weeks in most plant communities. If removal is delayed longer, the amounts of nutrients removed will often fall below the annual atmospheric input. In plant communities where annual above-ground production of nitrogen and phosphorus are lower than the annual atmospheric deposition already, rapid removal of the cuttings may be the only way to maintain at least potassium at a limiting level.
5. The main effect of hay-making on the soil nutrient status most likely consists of a reduction of the potassium availability, at least on sandy soils with a low cation exchange capacity and provided there is little delay in hay removal.  相似文献

1 The North American mid-continent population of lesser snow geese now exceeds 3 million birds and the population is increasing in the order of 7% per annum. The foraging activities of the birds on Arctic breeding grounds are leading to loss of vegetation and habitat destruction, particularly in coastal areas bordering the Hudson and James Bays.
2 Multitemporal analysis of LANDSAT data has been carried out to detect vegetational change from 1973 to 1993 at La Pérouse Bay and its vicinity, the site of a breeding colony of snow geese.
3 Difference vegetation images (DVI) (difference between infra-red and red images) were prepared from images obtained in late summer in 1973, 1984 and 1993, in order to enhance vegetation density. Pair-wise differences were calculated between these DVI images, which resulted in three, secondary, classified images. Classification of the three secondary images (1973–84, 1984–93, 1973–93) yielded three well-defined classes: water, vegetation decline and no change in vegetation.
4 Histogram counts gave the following values for areas of vegetation decline: 1973–84, 1026 ha; 1984–93, 1428 ha; 1973–93, 2454 ha.
5 The loss of vegetation and the destruction of habitat are discussed in relation to the foraging activities of the expanding goose population.  相似文献

Soils of different Eastern Arabian vegetation types, dominated by five desert perennials have been analysed for their texture, salinity and surface hardness. The vegetation types were analysed for plant species richness and composition. Special emphasis was given to Abu Dhabi's widespread terrestrial perennials Cyperus conglomeratus Rottb., Haloxylon salicornicum (Moq.) Bge., Pennisetum divisum (Gmel.) Henr., Seidlitzia rosmarinus Ehrenb. ex Bge. and Zygophyllum mandavillei Hadidi. The results show some important relationships between soils and plants. C. conglomeratus indicates the lowest soil salinity levels and the finest texture. P. divisum indicates the highest species richness and S. rosmarinus indicates the lowest species richness. Z. mandavillei indicates the highest salinity levels, the largest soil particle size, and the hardest soil surfaces.  相似文献

The contribution of indigenous arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) to growth and phosphorus (P) uptake by oilseed flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) was examined in two field experiments covering soil P levels from 20–86 mg kg-1 NaHCO3-extractable P. The fumigant dazomet was applied to the soil in half of the plots to obtain control plants with reduced mycorrhiza formation. An extensive AMF colonization of up to 48% of the root length was established in untreated soil of both experiments, although P fertilization reduced colonization to 28–39% at the latest harvests. Fumigation markedly decreased or totally prevented AMF colonization throughout the experiments. Root growth responded to fumigation by increased total and specific root length. Shoot P uptake was decreased by fumigation at soil P levels lower than ca. 50 mg kg-1 whereas shoot growth was reduced by fumigation at soil P levels lower than ca. 40 mg kg-1. The effects of fumigation were ascribed to the suppression of mycorrhiza formation. The effect of the AMF increased with decreasing soil P levels. Phosphorus inflow through roots (based on shoot P uptake) was reduced more strongly by fumigation than total P uptake. The P inflow through fungal tissue in roots was estimated to 4 × 10-14 mol P cm-1 s-1. We conclude that AMF are essential to flax growth at soil P levels below ca. 40 mg P kg-1, which is representative of the conditions under which most flax is grown.  相似文献

 The vernalization gene Vrn-A1 on chromosome 5A is the predominant gene determining the spring/winter habit difference in bread wheat. Vrn-A1 was physically mapped using a set of deletion lines which located it to the region of chromosome 5A flanked by deletion breakpoints 0.68 and 0.78. This interval was shown to be homoeologous to a region of rice chromosome 3 that contains the flowering-time QTL Hd-6, previously mapped in a Nipponbare×Kasalath cross, and FLTQ1, a novel QTL identified by analysis of 78 F3 families derived from a cross of ‘IR20’ב63–83’. Possible relationships between Vrn-A1 and rice QTL are discussed. Analysis of the chromosome 5A deletion lines showed evidence for a second, more proximal flowering-time effect located between deletion breakpoints 0.56 and 0.64. The proximal part of chromosome 5A is homoeologous to rice chromosome 9, on which two QTL were detected in the ‘IR20ב63–83’ cross. The possible relationship between these effects is also discussed. Abstract: In vitro studies indicate that p42/p44MAPK phosphorylate both nuclear and cytoplasmic proteins. However, the functional targets of p42/p44MAPK activation in vivo remain unclear. To address this question, we localized activated p42/p44MAPK in hippocampus and cortex and determined their signaling effects after electroconvulsive shock treatment (ECT) in rats. Phosphorylated p42/p44MAPK content increased in the cytoplasm of hippocampal neurons in response to ECT. Consistent with this cytoplasmic localization, inhibition of ECT-induced p42/p44MAPK activation by the extracellular signal-regulated kinase kinase inhibitor PD098059 blocked phosphorylation of the cytoplasmic protein microtubule-associated protein 2c (MAP2c), but failed to inhibit the induction of the nuclear protein c-Fos in response to ECT. In contrast to hippocampal neurons, cortical neurons exhibited an increase in amount of phosphorylated p42/p44MAPK in both the nucleus and cytoplasm after ECT. Accordingly, PD098059 blocked the induction of Fos-like immunoreactivity in the nuclei of cortical neurons as well as MAP2c phosphorylation in the cytoplasm. Our data indicate that both nuclear and cytoplasmic substrates can be activated by p42/p44MAPK in vivo. However, the functional targets of p42/p44MAPK signaling depend on the precise location of p42/p44MAPK within different subcellular compartments of brain regions. These results indicate unique functional pathways of p42/p44MAPK-mediated signal transduction within different brain regions in vivo.  相似文献
