SUMMARY

In shallow lakes a siltation system develops when wind driven water turbulence erodes the lake floor, silt is resuspended and transported by means of waterdrift into the littoral vegetation. Here, due to the resistance of the vegetation, the turbulence is reduced and the silt deposited. Through this mechanism, the prevailing winds have a major rôle in the erosion and siltation pattern, lake morphology, vegetation pattern and in the mixing of water and nutrients from the open water and the reedswamp and vice versa. The model explains the uneven distribution of vegetation at the lakes Neusiedlersee (Austria) and Chilwa (Malawi) satisfactorily, if one assumes a positive correlation between siltation and reedswamp growth and spread.  相似文献

Ubiquitin interacting motifs (UIMs) are short α‐helices found in a number of eukaryotic proteins. UIMs interact weakly but specifically with ubiquitin conjugated to other proteins, and in so doing, mediate specific cellular signals. Here we used phage display to generate ubiquitin variants (UbVs) targeting the N‐terminal UIM of the yeast Vps27 protein. Selections yielded UbV.v27.1, which recognized the cognate UIM with high specificity relative to other yeast UIMs and bound with an affinity more than two orders of magnitude higher than that of ubiquitin. Structural and mutational studies of the UbV.v27.1‐UIM complex revealed the molecular details for the enhanced affinity and specificity of UbV.v27.1, and underscored the importance of changes at the binding interface as well as at positions that do not contact the UIM. Our study highlights the power of the phage display approach for selecting UbVs with unprecedented affinity and high selectivity for particular α‐helical UIM domains within proteomes, and it establishes a general approach for the development of inhibitors targeting interactions of this type.  相似文献

Advances in our understanding of skeletal stem cells and their role in bone development and repair, offer the potential to open new frontiers in bone regeneration. Tissue engineering seeks to harness the regenerative capacity innate to bone for the replacement of tissue lost or damaged through a broad range of conditions associated with an increasingly aged population. The strategy entails ex vivo expansion of multipotential populations followed by delivery to the site of damage on dynamically durable-biodegradable three-dimensional structures which provide the requisite extracellular microenvironment for stem cell driven tissue development. This review will examine bone stem cell biology, and current advances in skeletal tissue engineering through the enhancement and marrying of biologically informed and clinically relevant strategies.  相似文献

Abstract Species need to disperse at a broad range of spatial scales, the recognition of which has spawned programmes such as Wildlands and WildCountry that aim to restore large‐scale connectivity. To achieve connectivity, a first step is to understand how wildlife uses existing remnants. In this study we examine the effect of remnant isolation and condition on the reptile fauna of fragmented mallee habitats in southern Australia. In three replicate landscapes we use pitfall traps to survey reptiles in five landscape elements: Conservation Park, connected, disconnected and isolated fragments, and the agricultural matrix. Reptile species richness, abundance, abundance of snakes, skinks and the 10 most common species had no significant association with landscape elements, excluding the matrix. This was despite a substantial reduction in plant species richness in the fragments, particularly of shrubs. Only seven individual reptiles were captured in the matrix, most on one site with deep sandy soils. The farmland on clay soils appeared to be relatively impermeable for reptiles, although four species could traverse 100 m of cleared sand‐dune. The lack of an isolation effect suggests that populations in remnants are persistent, or that occasional dispersal by common reptiles maintains populations. In contrast with common species, fewer rare species were captured in remnants compared with the Conservation Park, implying that some species may be entirely excluded from the remnants. Our study suggests that the spatial configuration and condition of the fragments sustain populations of many common reptile species. Remnants will therefore be invaluable as attempts are made to restore landscape‐scale permeability. However, additional conservation effort should be made to restore plant species that have been lost from the agricultural landscape. Future research should aim to better define the suite of reptile species that may not be able to use the remnants at all.  相似文献

Our understanding of the controls and magnitudes of regional CO2 exchanges in the Arctic are limited by uncertainties due to spatial heterogeneity in vegetation across the landscape and temporal variation in environmental conditions through the seasons. We measured daytime net ecosystem CO2 exchange and each of its component fluxes in the three major tundra ecosystem-types that typically occur along natural moisture gradients in the Canadian Low Arctic biweekly during the full snow-free season of 2004. In addition, we used a plant-removal treatment to compare the contribution of bulk soil organic matter to total respiratory CO2 loss among these ecosystems. Net CO2 exchange rates varied strongly, but not consistently, among ecosystems in the spring and summer phases as a result of ecosystem-specific and differing responses of gross photosynthesis and respiration to temporal variation in environmental conditions. Overall, net carbon gain was largest in the wet sedge ecosystem and smallest in the dry heath. Our measures of CO2 flux variation within each ecosystem were frequently most closely correlated with air or soil temperatures during each seasonal phase. Nevertheless, a particularly large rainfall event in early August rapidly decreased respiration rates and stimulated gross photosynthetic rates, resulting in peak rates of net carbon gain in all ecosystems. Finally, the bulk soil carbon contribution to total respiration was relatively high in the birch hummock ecosystem. Together, these results demonstrate that the relative influences of moisture and temperature as primary controls on daytime net ecosystem CO2 exchange and its component fluxes differ in fundamental ways between the landscape and ecosystem scales. Furthermore, they strongly suggest that carbon cycling responses to environmental change are likely to be highly ecosystem-specific, and thus to vary substantially across the low arctic landscape. 【目的】分析青藏高原不同类型盐碱湖中的优势产甲烷菌群和优势产甲烷代谢途径。【方法】以不同盐度和植被类型的公珠错、昆仲错和无植被的兹格塘错的沉积物为研究对象,通过高通量测序和q PCR定量古菌16S r RNA多样性分析优势古菌类群;模拟原位盐浓度及p H,比较不同产甲烷底物(甲醇、三甲胺、乙酸和H_2/CO_2)富集沉积物的产甲烷速率,分析其优势产甲烷菌代谢类型。通过添加产甲烷抑制剂(2-溴乙烷磺酸盐),检测沉积物中产甲烷底物积累,确定不同盐碱湖中主要的产甲烷途径。【结果】昆仲错的优势菌群包括甲基/乙酸型的甲烷八叠球菌科(Methanosarcinaceae,11%),乙酸型的甲烷鬃菌科(Methanosaetaceae,7.9%)和氢型甲烷菌甲烷杆菌目(Methanomicrobiales,7.4%);公珠错和兹格塘错的优势菌群为甲烷鬃菌科(Methanosaetaceae)分别占15%和15.3%,及甲烷杆菌属(Methanobacterium)和甲基型的甲烷叶菌属(Methanolobus)。公珠错和昆仲错分别以乙酸和甲醇产甲烷速率最高,而兹格塘错从不同底物产甲烷速率无差异。抑制甲烷产生后,公珠错主要积累乙酸,昆仲错主要积累甲醇;兹格塘错不仅甲烷排放低,也无产甲烷物质显著积累。【结论】昆仲错沉积物中的甲烷主要来自甲醇,公珠错中的甲烷主要来自乙酸,而兹格塘错产甲烷和底物积累不活跃。因而推测高原盐碱湖主要的产甲烷途径和菌群可能与周围植被类型的相关性更高,而与盐度的直接相关性较低。  相似文献

为了能掌握全国植被综合生态质量的高低及其时空变化,构建了既能反映植被生产力又能反映植被覆盖度的植被综合生态质量指数,建立了植被综合生态质量指数年际对比和多年变化趋势评价模型。利用构建的指数和评价模型,以2017年作为监测评价的当年,以2000—2017年作为评价的多年时段,对全国植被综合生态质量时空变化进行了监测评价。结果表明:(1)2017年全国大部地区植被综合生态质量指数高于2000—2016年多年平均值,生态质量偏好;2017年福建、广西、海南、广东、云南植被综合生态质量位居全国前五位,构建的植被综合生态质量指数及其年际对比模型可以定量反映全国植被综合生态质量的空间差异和年际差异。(2)全国有90.7%的区域2000—2017年植被综合生态质量指数呈提高趋势,东北地区西部、内蒙古东部、华北大部、西北地区东部、西南地区东部、华南西部等地生态质量指数提升明显,构建的植被综合生态质量指数多年变化趋势评价模型可以定量反映植被生态质量的多年变化趋势和幅度。(3)南方大部地区2000—2017年平均年植被综合生态质量指数在50.0以上,北方大部地区在50.0以下;我国中东部大部地区在20.0以上,西部大部地区在20.0以下,表明南方大部地区年植被生态质量好于北方、中东大部好于西部。可见,构建的植被综合生态质量指数及其年际对比和多年变化趋势评价模型,能够监测评价当年和多年全国植被综合生态质量的时空变化,可为掌握全国植被生态质量动态提供模型和方法。  相似文献
