Approximately 10% (33 of 304) of the predominantly male skulls from the 6th through 8th centuries in southwestern Germany exhibit cranial fractures derived from blunt or sharp force trauma. No evidence of fracture healing characterizes 24% (n = 8) of these individuals. All nonhealed fractures were caused by sharp force, and four of these wounds cross the sagittal sinus. The lengths of these straight-edged wounds, produced exclusively by sword blows, measure around 8.0 cm for fatal, and about 5.0 cm for nonfatal wounds. Seventy-six percent (n = 25) of these skulls exhibit some healing, which indicates that these injuries did not lead to immediate death. In this group are all depressed fractures resulting from blunt force blows. Two thirds of the 45 cranial injuries noted on these 33 skulls are located on the left side of these individuals, with a concentration in the frontoparietal region. Bony indications of wound infection occur in four cases (12%). Three crania exhibit circular trepanations in association with fractures. These phenomena are discussed in the context of modern neurotraumatological knowledge. 相似文献

目的探讨慢性阻塞性肺疾病(COPD)患者继发肺部真菌感染的临床特点。方法回顾性分析2008年1月到2010年12月安徽医科大学第一附属医院收治的COPD继发肺部真菌感染患者病例,并对其耐药情况进行比较。结果本组199例COPD患者检出白色念珠菌137例(68.84%),光滑念珠菌32例(16.08%),热带念珠菌17例(8.54%),克柔念珠菌9例(4.52%),毛霉菌3例(1.51%),清酒假丝酵母菌1例(0.50%);白色念珠菌检出率有下降趋势,热带念珠菌有上升趋势;196例真菌对伏立康唑、氟康唑、两性霉素B、伊曲康唑、氟胞嘧啶的耐药率分别为3.6%、5.1%、1.0%、8.7%和0;2008年至2010年白色念珠菌和光滑念珠菌耐药率变化差异无统计学意义。结论 COPD患者继发肺部真菌感染病原菌仍以白色念珠菌为主,其次为光滑念珠菌和热带念珠菌;白色念珠菌和光滑念珠菌耐药率无明显改变。 相似文献

We describe the development of a molecular detection system designed for use with synovial fluid (SF)-based infections. The
methodology employs a lysis/extraction procedure that effectively disrupts microorganisms allowing for release of the microbial
DNA and its amplification by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). We tested the effectiveness of adding a mixed-bed, ion-exchange
resin to the extract to remove PCR inhibitory components present in the SF. After centrifugation to separate the resin, DNA
contained in the supernatant is subjected to PCR using oligonucleotide primers designed for broad-spectrum microorganism detection.
Amplification products are analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis and/or DNA hybridization methodology. We report here the
detection sensitivity and specificity of the protocol using SF inoculated withEscherichia coli andStaphyloccocus aureus. We have applied this new methodology to clinical SF specimens with results superior to standard laboratory culturing assays. 相似文献

Infected females may transfer maternal antibodies (MatAbs) to their offspring, which may then be transiently protected against infections the mother has encountered. However, the role of maternal protection in infectious disease dynamics in wildlife has largely been neglected. Here, we investigate the effects of Puumala hantavirus (PUUV)-specific MatAbs on PUUV dynamics, using 7 years'' data from a cyclic bank vole population in Finland. For the first time to our knowledge, we partition seropositivity data from a natural population into separate dynamic patterns for MatAbs and infection. The likelihood of young of the year carrying PUUV-specific MatAbs during the breeding season correlated positively with infection prevalence in the overwintered parent population in the preceding spring. The probability of PUUV infection varied between seasons (highest in spring, lowest in late summer) and depended on population structure, but was also, in late autumn, notably, negatively related to summer MatAb prevalence, as well as to infection prevalence earlier in the breeding season. Hence, our results suggest that high infection prevalence in the early breeding season leads to a high proportion of transiently immune young individuals, which causes delays in transmission. This suggests, in turn, that MatAb protection has the potential to affect infection dynamics in natural populations. 相似文献

Septoria tritici blotch (STB) is one of the most important leaf diseases in wheat worldwide. Objectives of this study were (i) to compare inoculation and natural infection; (ii) to evaluate the level of adult‐plant resistance to STB using four isolates; and (iii) to analyse environmental stability of 24 winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties in inoculated vs. non‐inoculated field trials across 3 years including nine environments (location × year combinations). Field trials were sown in split‐plot design inoculated with four aggressive isolates of S. tritici plus one non‐inoculated variant as main factor and 24 wheat varieties as subfactor. Septoria tritici blotch severity was visually scored as percentage flag leaves covered with lesions bearing pycnidia. Overall STB rating ranged from 8% (Solitär) to 63% (Rubens) flag leaf area affected, resulting in significant (P < 0.01) genotypic variance. Variance of genotype × environment interaction amounted to approximately 50% of the genotypic variance. Genotype × isolate interaction variance was significant too (P < 0.01) but of minor importance. Therefore, environmental stability of varieties should be a major breeding goal. The varieties Solitär, History and Florett were most resistant and stable as revealed by a regression approach, and the susceptible varieties were generally unstable. Hence, STB resistance and stability are correlated (P < 0.01), but there were some exceptions (Tuareg, Ambition). Promising candidates for an environmentally stable, effective adult‐plant resistance have been identified. 相似文献

Ibuprofen augments pro‐inflammatory cytokine release in a mouse model of Vibrio vulnificus infection
We evaluated the effects of ibuprofen on cytokine production and mortality in a mouse model of septic shock induced by Vibrio vulnificus, strain Chi Mei Vv05191. Ibuprofen (50 mg/kg) or saline (control) was given to female BALB/cByJ mice for three consecutive days before exposure to the pathogen. For cytokine production, serum and peritoneal fluid were assayed for IL‐1β, IL‐6, TNF‐α, and MIP‐2 by ELISA at 3, 6, and 9 hr after intraperitoneal infection of the organism. At 6 hr after infection, serum and peritoneal fluid levels of IL‐6, TNF‐α, and MIP‐2 were significantly higher in the ibuprofen group. For mortality determination, 73 mice (37 ibuprofen, 36 control) were injected intramuscularly with V. vulnificus. Kaplan–Meier survival curves were analyzed. Survival was significantly decreased by ibuprofen only for the lowest inoculum (25 CFU) of V. vulnificus. Administration of ibuprofen before infection may augment the pathogenesis of V. vulnificus by stimulating cytokine production. 相似文献
