Surficial soil development was studied in four wetland basins created on the floodplain of the Des Plaines River near Chicago, Illinois, USA. These studies determined changes in the spatial distribution of plant-available nutrients as a result of establishing two different wetland hydrologic regimes. Three wetland basins had mineral soils and one an organic soil. A geostatistical analysis including kriging of collected data indicated that all soil parameters showed significant changes in their spatial structure as a result of the water inputs and unidirectional flows. The degree of spatial variability as indicated by autocorrelation in the soil data (i.e., points closer to one another are more similar than points further apart due to the influence of landscape processes) declined for all parameters except Mg+2. Temporal changes in the spatial patterns of extractable phosphorus (P) and percent organic carbon (OC) tended to be inverse; P declined in areas where OC increased and vice versa. The spatial pattern of these changes was dissimilar in the mineral soils as compared to the organic soil and was related to patterns of primary productivity. Zones of P uptake and OC accumulation were also related to wetland hydrology and primary productivity. Changes in the distribution of nutrients, particularly P, may be viewed as a result of nutrient spirals within the wetlands. By comparison, the reorganization in the concentrations of K+ and Ca+2 appear to have been mediated by cation exchange processes. The formation of new concentration gradients was strongly related to both flow pathways and the different water inflow rates. The formation of concentration gradients in exchangeable cations was not reflected in the average concentrations within each basin. Mean values changed significantly in only a few instances. Reducing data in this way missed important biogeochemical changes occurring within the experimental wetland basins. High altitude wetlands on the Tibetan Plateau have been shrinking due to anthropogenic disturbances and global climate change. However, the few studies that have been conducted on wetlands are inconclusive about the effect of soil moisture on seed banks and potential of seed banks in wetlands with different levels of soil moisture for regeneration of dried wetlands. We investigated seed banks and plant communities along a soil moisture gradient. A structural equation model was used to analyze the direct and indirect effects of soil moisture on seed banks, as well as the relationship between plant communities and seed banks. Although soil moisture had no direct effects on seed bank richness and density and indirect effects on seed banks through plant community, it had indirect effects on the seed bank through soil pH. Soil moisture also did not have direct effects on plant community richness, but it had indirect effects through soil pH. Plant community composition changed with soil moisture, but aboveground plant abundance and seed banks composition did not change. Low similarity exists between plant community and seed banks for all wetlands, and similarity decreased along the moisture gradient. The key factor determining plant community diversity was soil pH, while seed bank diversity was mainly affected by soil pH and plant community diversity with wetland drying. Although potential for regenerating the plant community from the seed bank decreased with an increase in soil moisture, drained wetlands still have enough residual seeds for successful restoration of species-rich alpine meadows.  相似文献

Wastewater treatment at the Houghton lake wetland: Soils and sediments   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
This paper describes the sediment and soils responses in a very long-running study of the capacity of a natural peatland to remove nutrients from treated wastewater. Data are here presented and analyzed from three decades of full-scale operation (1978–2007), during which large changes in the wetland soils occurred. An average of 600,000 m3 y−1 of treated water was discharged each warm season to the Porter Ranch peatland near the community of Houghton Lake, Michigan. This discharge was seasonal, commencing no sooner than May 1 and ending no later than October 31. During the winter half-year, treated wastewater was stored at the lagoon site. This water contained 3.5 mg/L of total phosphorus, and 7 mg/L of dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Nutrients were stored in the 100 ha irrigation area, which removed 94% of the phosphorus (53 t) and 95% of the dissolved inorganic nitrogen. Phosphorus was stored in new biomass, increased soil sorption, and accretion of new soils and sediments, with accretion being dominant. Peat probings, water level increases and topographical surveys established quantitative measures of soil accretion. Over 30 cm of new soil developed, in which nutrient storage occurred. Phosphorus concentrations in the new soil were approximately 2000 mg P/kg, and the nitrogen concentration was 2–3%DW. The removal of TSS was effective, but minor in comparison to the internal generation and cycling of produced particulates. Later in the project history, the interior portion of impacted area became a floating mat. Sedimentation processes then occurred with no exposure to above-mat detrital processes. Trace element analyses showed no appreciable accumulation of heavy metals, other than the calcium and iron that characterized the antecedent wetland and the incoming water. Biomass cycling models were found to produce reasonable estimates of the measured nutrient accumulations. The light loadings of nutrients to this system produced dramatic effects in the ecosystem, but were lower than the range seen in some other treatment wetlands. Insufficient nitrogen was added to support the new biomass, and nitrogen fixation was identified as a possible compensatory mechanism.  相似文献

High rainfall and its seasonal distribution cause periodic flooding of large areas in tropical South America. Floods result from lateral overflow of streams and rivers, or from sheet-flooding by rains as a consequence of poor drainage. Depending upon the size of the catchment area, flooding can occur with one peak (e.g., in the Amazon River and its large affluents) or in many peaks (e.g., in streams and small rivers).Vegetation cover of floodplains varies from different types of savannas and aquatic macrophyte communities to forests depending upon the hydrologic regime and local rainfall. Large differences exist in primary and secondary production due to large differences in nutrient levels in water and soils.An attempt is made to characterize the floodplains according to their hydrologic regimes, vegetation cover and nutrient status. The areal extent of different types of floodplains is estimated. 湿地为城市发展提供巨大的生态系统服务,但其被市场“认可”的经济价值难以准确评估。以青海省西宁市城市湿地为例,筛选房屋结构、可达性、环境、湿地等10个因子,采用享乐价格模型对110个湿地周边社区样点的因子数据(2020年)进行分析,定量分析城市湿地被市场“认可”的价值量。采用断裂点理论和加权Voronoi图模型方法等,分析了湿地生态系统服务价值的空间影响范围;构建了湿地生态系统服务价值影响因素的结构方程模型,探究了影响湿地生态系统服务价值的主要因素。结果表明:(1)2020年湟水城市湿地的总价值达到3.367亿元,约有54.3%的生态系统服务通过房产被市场转化;(2)湟水湿地单位面积的生态系统服务价值为151.916元/m~2,生态系统服务价值由大到小排列:火烧沟(1.632亿元)>海湖湿地(0.710亿元)>宁海湿地(0.629亿元)>北川湿地(0.330亿元);(3)湿地生态系统服务价值占房产总价值的比例达到2.04%,位列10个因素中的第7位;线性函数模型结果显示,购买者对湿地的边际支付意愿是0.12元/m~2,即购买者愿意为房产与湿地之间的距离每缩小1m而多支付...  相似文献

Two hundred and twenty-four phytoplanktonic taxa were recorded in a riverine floodplain on the NE side of the Doñana marshland from September 2002 to 2004. This collection of 11 samples included 80 Bacillariophyceae (Diatoms), 71 Chlorophyta, 39 Cyanophyta, 19 Euglenophyta, 6 Chrysophyceae, 5 Cryptophyta, and 4 Dinophyceae. Fifty-five percent of the total taxa had a very low frequency of appearance (<5%), while only three species appeared with a frequency >90% (Monoraphidium contortum Komárková-Legnevorá, Cyclotella atomus Hustedt, and Nitzschia palea W. Smith). According to multivariate analyses, both temporal and spatial factors produced a pattern in the phytoplankton assemblages dominated by freshwater inputs during winter flooding, tidal inputs in summer, and transitional stages during the rest of the year. Spatial segregation of phytoplankton was likely due to differences in retention time and distance to water input. The main taxa involved in this segregation were Chrysidalis sp. 1 (June 2003 and 2004), Chlamydomonas sp. 4 (September 2003), C. atomus (December 2003), and Tetradesmus aff. crocini (February 2004). The hydrologic complexity of the study area could account for this high taxa richness by promoting replacement and colonization episodes following seasonal changes in water source (freshwater versus tidal inputs).  相似文献

Methane emissions from three wetland habitats in the MississippiRiver deltaic plain were measured over a three year period. Fluxdata collected indicate that each habitat was a net source of methane to the atmosphere throughout the year. Average emissionfrom a Taxodium distichum / Nyssa aquatica (bald cypress / watertupelo) swamp forest was 146 ± 199 mgCH4 m-2d-1 whileemissions from a Sagittaria lancifolia (bulltongue) freshwatermarsh averaged 251 ± 188 mg CH4m-2d-1. Methane flux from a Spartina patens / Sagittaria lancifolia intermediate marsh was significantlyhigher, 912 ± 923 mg CH4m-2d-1. Seasonal variation wassignificant with emissions being higher in the late summer andearly fall. Significant diurnal emissions were observed fromthe Sagittaria lancifolia marsh site. Soil temperature (5 and 10 cm depths) was found to be significantly correlated with methaneemission from the three sites.  相似文献
