Spatial distributions of root systems of Larix gmelinii (Rupr.) Rupr. trees were examined in two stands in central Siberia: an even-aged stand (ca. 100 yrs-old) and a mature, uneven-aged (240–280 yrs-old) stand. Five larch trees of different sizes were sampled by excavating coarse roots (diameter > 5 mm) in each stand. Dimensions and ages of all first-order lateral roots were measured. Micro-scale conditions of soil temperature and soil water suction (each 10 cm deep) were also examined in relation to earth hummock topography (mound vs. trough) and/or ground floor vegetation types (moss vs. lichens). All larch trees developed superficial root systems, consisting of the aborted short tap root (10–40 cm in soil depth) and some well-spread lateral roots (n= 4-13). The root network of each tree was asymmetric, and its rooting area reached about four times the crown projection area. Lateral roots generally expanded into the upper soil layers of the mounds where summer soil temperature was 1–6°C higher than inside nearby troughs. Chronological analysis indicated that lateral root expansion started successively from lower to upper parts of each aborted tap root, and some lateral roots occurred simultaneously at several decades after tree establishment. The process of root system development was likely to be primarily linked with post-fire dynamics of rhizosphere environment of the permafrost soils.  相似文献

We examined the effects of various culture environments on major outer membrane proteins from Porphyromonas gingivalis ATCC 33277. Major outer membrane protein patterns on gel electrophoresis showed little difference over the culturable range of osmolarity and pH. With elevated temperature or prolonged culture, the intensities of the gingipain bands decreased; however, bands of RagA, RagB and the putative porins were relatively stable. Similar results were observed with several different culture media. Although the precise functions of RagA, RagB and the putative porins are unknown, these factors may be strongly related to the initiation and progression of adult periodontitis.  相似文献

We examine the vocal repertoire of spawning cod, Gadus morhua. Fish captured in northern Norway were allowed to spawn in tanks and we recorded sound during the spawning period. The cod's grunt repertoire contained more variation than previously suggested. Half of the grunts lasted more than 200ms including one grunt lasting nearly 1s and consisting of 52 pulses, which is far beyond previous reports. Moreover, increasing repetition period and increasing duration of pulses within a grunt from the first pulse towards pulses at the end of the grunt, has previously not been described. On the other hand, no knocks or series of knocks, and on average only one grunt per hour suggest that cod are less versatile vocalists than closely related gadid species, such as haddock, Melanogrammus aeglefinus.  相似文献

Inbreeding depression was simultaneously studied under contrasted environments, laboratory and natural conditions, using individuals originating from 14 families of the freshwater snail Physa acuta. Both survival and growth of juveniles showed inbreeding depression under laboratory conditions. The same fitness components were monitored with mature snails either kept under laboratory conditions or released at a natural site and analysed using capture-mark-recapture models. Genetic composition of both samples was similar. Inbreeding depression on survival was highest in the laboratory while strong outbreeding depression was revealed in the field. Thus inbreeding depression may not be always higher under natural conditions, at the opposite of what is commonly assumed. We suggest that inbreeding depression is dependent on metabolic requirements imposed by the environment. Other evidences showing that inbreeding depression is environment-dependent are reviewed. We conclude that genetic models should include both genetic and environmental variance in inbreeding depression for studying mating system evolution.  相似文献

以2个粳型光温敏核不育系和4个籼稻品种为材料,配制籼粳交组合,用包括基因型×环境互作效应的胚乳性状遗传模型对3个蒸煮品质性状(直链淀粉含量、胶稠度、碱消值)进行了遗传研究,结果表明:直接加性和母体加性效应对三个性状的遗传变异起主要作用.基因型×环境互作主要表现为显性×环境以及细胞质×环境互作.直链淀粉含量的普通遗传率都不显著,只有较高的互作母体遗传率;胶稠度具有显著的普通直接遗传率和互作细胞质遗传率;碱消值的普通直接遗传率和普通母体遗传率都极显著.根据遗传效应预测值对供试亲本的利用价值作了评价。  相似文献

Seven gloves were studied worn by eight sedentary subjects (six men and two women) exposed to cold–dry, C–D, (mean dry bulb temperature −17.2C; mean dew point temperature ), and cold–wet, C–W, ( 0C; ) conditions. Mean endurance times were 75 min for the C–D and 162 min for the C–W conditions. A three-phase response pattern of the temperature in the fingers was characterized. Phase I comprised an initial period during which finger temperature remained close to the pre-exposed level, due to delayed vasoconstriction in the finger. Phase II involved an exponential-like decrease of finger temperature indicative of the onset of vasoconstriction in the finger. Phase III manifested periodic finger temperature changes due to cold induced vasodilatation (CIVD). Mean wave patterns for phase III indicated approximately 3.5 waves · h−1 in the C–D but only about 2 waves · h−1 in the C–W condition. Extension of endurance time, due to CIVD, was defined as the difference in time between the actual end of the experiment and the time the finger-tip would have reached the set temperature endurance limit as extrapolated by a continued exponential drop. Three overall response patterns of fingers in the cold were characterized: type A exhibiting all 3 phases; type B1 or B2 exhibiting either phases I+II or phases II+III; and type C showing only phase II. Considerable inter- and intra-subject variability was found. In both test conditions the final physiological thermal states of the subjects were between comfortable and slightly uncomfortable but acceptable and thus did not correlate with the responses in the fingers. Above- and belowground tissues of co-occurring saplings (0.1-1 m height) of Acer saccharum Marsh. (very shade tolerant), Acer rubrum L. (shade tolerant), Fraxinus americana L. (intermediate shade tolerant), and Prunus serotina Ehrh. (shade intolerant) were harvested from a forest understory to test the hypothesis that the pattern of biomass allocation varied predictably with shade-tolerance rank. The placement and length of branches along the main axis were consistent with the formation of a monolayer of foliage for the tolerant and intermediate species. Other morphological characteristics did not vary predictably with shade-tolerance rank. The maintenance of high specific leaf area (SLA; leaf area/leaf mass) and leaf area ratio (LAR; leaf area/sapling mass) is considered important for growth under extreme shade, yet these traits were not clearly related to the shade-tolerance rank of these species. Fraxinus americana, an intermediate species, had the highest LAR and growth rate in the understory, and with the exception of P. serotina, the very shade-tolerant A. saccharum had the lowest LAR. Prunus serotina maintained a large starch-rich tap root and shoot dieback was common, yielding the largest root/shoot ratio for these species. The observed allocation patterns were not similar to the long-standing expectation for the phenotypic response of juvenile trees to shade, but were consistent with three hypothetical "growth strategies" in the understory: (1) the low SLA and LAR of A. saccharum may provide a measure of defense against herbivores and pathogens and thus promote persistence in the understory, (2) the high SLA for F. americana and high LAR for F. americana and A. rubrum may enable these species to achieve high growth rates in shade, and (3) the large carbohydrate stores of P. serotina may poise this species for opportunistic growth following disturbance. The relative importance of resistance to herbivores and pathogens vs. the maintenance of high growth rates may be important in evaluating the patterns of biomass allocation in the understory.  相似文献
