Many structural and functional properties possessed by plants have great potentials to stimulate new concepts and inno-vative ideas in the field of biomimetic engineering. The key inputs from biology can be used for creation of efficient and op-timized structures. The study of the geometry and folding pattern of leaves of Mimosa pudica,referred as Sensitive Plant,reveals some of the peculiar characteristics during folding and unfolding. When the leaf is touched,it quickly folds its leaflets and pinnae and droops downward at the petiole attachment. With the help of experiments on simulation model,the variations in angle of leaflets and degree of compaction after folding are investigated.  相似文献

Inhibited movement patterns of carpal tunnel structures have been found in carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) patients. Motion analysis on ultrasound images allows us to non-invasively study the (relative) movement of carpal tunnel structures and recently a speckle tracking method using singular value decomposition (SVD) has been proposed to optimize this tracking. This study aims to assess the reliability of longitudinal speckle tracking with SVD in both healthy volunteers and patients with CTS.Images from sixteen healthy volunteers and twenty-two CTS patients were used. Ultrasound clips of the third superficial flexor tendon and surrounding subsynovial connective tissue (SSCT) were acquired during finger flexion-extension. A custom made tracking algorithm was used for the analysis. Intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated using a single measure, two-way random model with absolute agreement and Bland-Altman plots were added for graphical representation.ICC values varied between 0.73 and 0.95 in the control group and 0.66–0.98 in the CTS patients, with the majority of the results classified as good to excellent. Tendon tracking showed higher reliability values compared to the SSCT, but values between the control and CTS groups were comparable.Speckle tracking with SVD can reliably be used to analyze longitudinal movement of anatomical structures with different sizes and compositions within the context of the carpal tunnel in both a healthy as well as a pathological state. Based on these results, this technique also holds relevant potential for areas where ultrasound based dynamic imaging requires quantification of motion.  相似文献

Here a differential geometry (DG) representation of protein backbone is explored on the analyses of protein conformational ensembles. The protein backbone is described by curvature, κ, and torsion, τ, values per residue and we propose 1) a new dissimilarity and protein flexibility measurement and 2) a local conformational clustering method. The methods were applied to Ubiquitin and c-Myb-KIX protein conformational ensembles and results show that κ\τ metric space allows to properly judge protein flexibility by avoiding the superposition problem. The dmax measurement presents equally good or superior results when compared to RMSF, especially for the intrinsically unstructured protein. The clustering method is unique as it relates protein global to local dynamics by providing a global clustering solutions per residue. The methods proposed can be especially useful to the analyses of highly flexible proteins. The pest Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) is reared in many research laboratories. In a culture established in 1996, attraction of males to the female‐produced sex pheromone in flight tunnel assays gradually decreased after ≈15 years of rearing. A new culture was established to enable comparison with the old culture regarding traits associated with mate finding. Female calling activity, pheromone titre and male antennal response to pheromone components did not differ between cultures. In contrast, very few males from the old culture reached the pheromone source in flight tunnel assays compared with 61%–81% of males from the other culture. Our results highlight the importance of maintaining viable insect cultures for research purposes and suggest frequent evaluation of traits involved in chemical communication in such cultures to ensure reliable results in experiments.  相似文献

The NMR structure of the peptide deformylase (PDF) (1–150) from Escherichia coli, which is an essential enzyme that removes the formyl group from nascent polypeptides and represents a potential target for drug discovery, was determined using 15N/13C doubly labeled protein. Nearly completely automated assignment routines were employed to assign three-dimensional triple resonance, 15N-resolved and 13C-resolved NOESY spectra using the program GARANT. This assignment strategy, demonstrated on a 17 kDa protein, is a significant advance in the automation of NMR data assignment and structure determination that will accelerate future work. A total of 2302 conformational constraints were collected as input for the distance geometry program DYANA. After restrained energy minimization with the program X-PLOR the 20 best conformers characterize a high quality structure with an average of 0.43 Å for the root-mean-square deviation calculated from the backbone atoms N, C and C, and 0.81 Å for all heavy atoms of the individual conformers relative to the mean coordinates for residues 1 to 150. The globular fold of PDF contains two -helices comprising residues 25–40, 125–138, six -strands 57–60, 70–77, 85–88, 98–101, 105–111, 117–123 and one 310 helix comprising residues 49–51. The C-terminal helix contains the HEXXH motif positioning a zinc ligand in a similar fashion to other metalloproteases, with the third ligand being cysteine and the fourth presumably a water. The three-dimensional structure of PDF affords insight into the substrate recognition and specificity for N-formylated over N-acetylated substrates and is compared to other PDF structures.  相似文献

The influences of geometric configuration, mycelial broth rheology and superficial gas velocity (Usg) were investigated with respect to the following hydrodynamic parameters: gas holdup (), oxygen transfer coefficient (KLa) and mixing time (tm). Increases in Usg and height of gas separator (Ht) caused an increase in and KLa, and a decrease in tm. Consequently, a diameter ratio (Dd/Dr) of 0.71 and Ht 0.20 m were found to be the best geometry and operation parameters to achieve high aeration and mixing efficiency for the high viscous broth system in the cultivation of filamentous fungi. An external airlift reactor (EALR) was developed and designed for the cultivation of filamentous fungi. The EALR with two spargers excels in reliability and high aeration and mass transfer coefficiency, resulting in a fast mycelial growth and high biomass productivity in the cultivation of the fungus Rhizopus oryzae.  相似文献
