Anagrus atomus L. is an important egg parasitoid of the green leafhopper Empoasca decipiens Paoli. In this study the ability of the parasitoid to locate and parasitize its host was investigated on four host plants, i.e., broad beans (Vicia faba L.), sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), and French beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.). For each plant species, the behavior of the parasitoid was observed on E. decipiens infested and noninfested plants. Searching and oviposition behavior were characterized by drumming, probing, and resting. Parasitoids spent significantly less time on non-infested than infested plants, 274.5 and 875.7 s, respectively, and no probing behavior was observed on non-infested plants. Frequency of resting behavior was significantly greater on non-infested than on infested plants. Total foraging time was significantly longer on infested than on non-infested plants, indicating that A. atomus females can efficiently discriminate between leaves with and without infestation. Parasitism of A. atomus was influenced by parasitoid density, with the highest parasitism rate (64.0%) obtained at a density of 10 A. atomus females/0.1356 m2 but the number of parasitized eggs per female and the searching efficiency decreased with increasing parasitoid density. 相似文献

The diving behavior of Adélie penguins Pygoscelis adeliae was investigated using time–depth recorders during the incubation period in the fast sea-ice area of Lützow-Holm Bay, Antarctica.
Dive profiles and activity/time allocation suggested that penguins were obligated to walk on the fast-ice for 90–100 km until
a polynya, which they used as an access to the pack-ice zone. Dive depth did not differ between males and females, though
males’ dive duration was longer than that of females. Dive depth was slightly shallower and dive duration was shorter during
the incubation than during the chick-rearing phase. Birds dove throughout the day, although less frequently around midnight,
and there was no clear diel change in dive depth. This daily dive pattern during incubation period was similar to that previously
observed during the chick-rearing period in a fast sea-ice area, but differed from that observed in sea-ice-free area. Variations
in diving behavior resulted from different environmental conditions, such as foraging area with different sea-ice condition,

Reproductive behavior of virtually all adult male rodents is dependent on concurrent availability of gonadal steroids. The ejaculatory reflex is incompatible with long-term absence of testicular steroids and typically disappears within 3 weeks after castration. Male Siberian hamsters are an exception to this rule; mating culminating in the ejaculatory reflex occurs as many as 6 months after castration (persistent copulation). The emergence of persistent copulation many weeks after gonadectomy is here shown not to require repeated post-castration sexual experience. Preoperative sexual experience, on the other hand, significantly increases the percent of males that copulate after gonadectomy, but is not required for the emergence of this trait in 25% of males. Castration prior to puberty prevents persistent copulation in all individuals in adulthood. Persistent copulators, unlike males that cease mating activity after castration, prefer the odors of estrous over non-estrous females when tested 4 months after castration and 7 weeks after the last mating test. Neural circuits of persistent copulators retain the ability to mediate male sex behavior and preferences for female odors in the complete absence of gonadal steroids; they are influenced by preoperative sexual experience and organizational effects of gonadal hormones at the time of puberty. 相似文献

Observations were made on herds of the Pacific walrus ( Odobenus rosmarus divergens ) to study their response during the capturing and handling of adult males in summer 1995 at a haul-out at Cape Peirce in southwestern Alaska. Three behaviors (alertness, displacement, and dispersal) were quantified from 16 capture sessions. Herd sizes ranged from 622 to 5,289 walruses. Handling of an immobilized walrus consisted of attempts to attach telemetry devices to the tusks and collect various biological samples. Handling activities resulted in an average of about 10-fold or greater levels of behavior in alertness, displacement, and dispersal than during precapture and darting periods. High levels of behavior usually occurred within the first 45 min of handling. In 8 of 10 capture sessions, walruses returned to predisturbance levels of behavior within 40 min of cessation of the handling disturbance. Alertness and displacement were moderately and negatively correlated with herd size during the handling period, which may reflect an effect of a threshold distance from the point of disturbance to responding individuals. Observations of walruses tagged with VHF radio transmitters indicated that the activities from a given capture session did not preclude tagged walruses from using the haul-out over a subsequent 11 -wk monitoring period. We compared the efficacy of artificial and natural selection processes in purging the genetic load of perpetually small populations.
We subjected replicate lines of the housefly (Musca domestica L.), recently derived from the wild, to artificial selection for increased mating propensity (i.e., the proportion of male–female
pairs initiating copulation within 30 min) in efforts to cull out the inbreeding depression effects of long-term small population
size (as determined by a selection protocol for increased assortative mating). We also maintained parallel non-selection lines
for assessing the spontaneous purge of genetic load due to inbreeding alone. We thus evaluated the fitness of artificially
and ‘naturally’ purging populations held at census sizes of 40 individuals over the course of 18 generations. We found that
the artificially selected lines had significant increases in mating propensity (up to 46% higher from the beginning of the
protocol) followed by reversed selection responses back to the initial levels, resulting in non-significant heritabilities.
Nevertheless, the ‘naturally’ selected lines had significantly lower fitness overall (a 28% reduction from the beginning of
the protocol), although lower effective population sizes could have contributed to this effect. We conclude that artificial
selection bolstered fitness, but only in the short-term, because the inadvertent fixation of extant genetic load later resulted
in pleiotropic fitness declines. Still, the short-term advantage of the selection protocol likely contributed to the success
of the speciation experiment since our recently-derived housefly populations are particularly vulnerable to inbreeding depression

Foraging decisions are an integral component of growth and maintenance and may reflect both environmental and genetic effects. We used a common garden experiment to evaluate the effects of food, temperature, and population source on pit-building decisions of the larval ant lion Myrmeleon immaculatus. In a laboratory common garden experiment, first-instar larvae from two southern (Georgia, South Carolina) and two northern (Connecticut, Rhode Island) populations were reared for 14 months in incubators under high- and low-food and high- and low-temperature regimes. For all populations, there was no effect of larval age on pit-building behavior. All larvae built and maintained pits more frequently at high temperatures than at low temperatures, and larvae in the low-food treatments built and maintained pits more frequently than larvae in the high-food treatments. Larvae from the southern populations built and maintained pits more frequently than larvae from northern populations. These results suggest that regional differences in foraging behavior may contribute to latitudinal gradients in life history strategies seen in this insect. 相似文献

越来越多的研究发现,雄性产生精子(精液)也需付出代价。雄性除了依据配偶质量和竞争对手的竞争强度适应性调整生殖投入外,雄性在求偶和交配行为上也相应产生适应性反应,求偶和交配行为具有可塑性。目前雄性求偶和交配行为可塑性研究主要集中于雌性多次交配的类群中,在雌性单次交配的类群中研究甚少。以雌蛛一生只交配一次而雄蛛可多次交配的星豹蛛为研究对象,比较:(1)前一雄性拖丝上信息物质对后续雄蛛求偶和交配行为的影响,(2)雌雄不同性比对雄蛛求偶和交配行为的影响。研究结果表明,星豹蛛前一雄蛛拖丝上的信息物质对后续雄蛛求偶潜伏期、求偶持续时间和交配持续时间都没有显著影响,但前一雄蛛拖丝上的信息物质对后续雄蛛求偶强度有显著抑制作用。同时,性比对星豹蛛雄蛛求偶和交配行为都没有显著影响。可见,星豹蛛雄蛛对同种雄性拖丝上的化学信息可产生求偶行为的适应性调整,而对性比不产生适应性反应。 相似文献
