The effects of supplemental oral (0, 40, and 400 ppm) and parenteral iron (0 and 2.72 mg Fe iv given initially as a single dose) on iron absorption, excretion, and retention were determined in 30 rats. Endogenous fecal iron excretion was determined by the radioisotope dilution technique after im injection of 80 kBq Fe-59, using blood and certain body tissues as reference sources for the estimation of the specific activity (Bq Fe-59/micrograms Fe) of endogenous iron. The basal diet contained 3.6 ppm Fe. Fe(III)-hydroxide-polymaltose was used as the sole iron source in oral, iv, and im iron treatments. Iron balance as determined from day 14 to 20 of the experiment was not significantly affected by iv iron administration. Nevertheless, a temporarily reduced retention should have occurred, since differences in final body iron contents were lower than 2.72 mg, as compared to the respective untreated groups. Apparent iron absorption and iron retention increased with surplus oral iron, and the efficiency rates were highest with adequate iron supply (40 ppm). True absorption rates of iron were similar without any, and with 40 ppm Fe amounting 40 to 50% of the intake. In the iron deficient rats, half of the actually absorbed iron (about 16 micrograms/d) was lost by endogenous fecal re-excretion, and another 3 micrograms/d by the urinary route. Endogenous loss with feces and with urine increased with further oral iron supply, but at a considerably lower rate as total fecal excretion. Parenterally administered iron did not affect endogenous loss at all. The results indicate that endogenous excretion cannot be regarded as a means to eliminate excessive iron, and might actually be an inevitable loss.  相似文献

Macrolophus pygmaeus (Rambur) (Hemiptera: Miridae) is widely distributed throughout the Palaearctic region. The aim was to explain the current geographic distribution of the species by investigating its genetic population structure. Samples of M. pygmaeus were collected in 15 localities through its range of distribution. A sample from a commercial producer was also analyzed. A total of 367 M. pygmaeus were genotyped for nine microsatellite loci. Isolation by distance was tested by Mantel's test. The molecular structure of M. pygmaeus populations was inferred by UPGMA, AMOVA, Principal component and Bayesian analyses. The average number of alleles per locus per population was 5.5 (range: 3.1–7.8). Istanbul (Turkey) and Nimes (France) had the lowest (0.291) and the highest (0.626) expected heterozygosity (He), respectively. There was an increase in He from the Canary Islands to Nimes, and a progressive decrease thereafter. A significant negative correlation was found between allelic richness and He, and the distance of each population to the easternmost locality (Canary Islands). Significant linkage disequilibrium was observed in the populations from Turkey. FST (0.004–0.334) indicated a high population differentiation, with isolation by distance supported by a high correlation. Bayesian analyses, PCA, and UPGMA pointed to three main clusters: (1) Greece and Turkey, (2) Italy and France, and (3) southern Iberia and the Canary Islands. The recent evolutionary history of M. pygmaeus is inferred from the data as follows: (1) the reduction in the geographic distribution of the species to the Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas, and possibly southern France, during glaciations and re‐colonization of northern Europe from its southern refuges; (2) the maintenance of high diversity in Iberia and Italy (and possibly southern France) during contraction periods, and bottlenecks in the Balkans; (3) introgression of the Italian–French lineage in northern Spain, naturally or through trade.  相似文献

AIMS: To investigate the aetiology of seed and boll rot of cotton grown in South Carolina (SC). METHODS AND RESULTS: Bacteria were isolated from diseased locules of cotton bolls collected in a field in SC, USA and tested for the ability to cause comparable disease symptoms in greenhouse grown cotton fruit. Spontaneously generated rifampicin-resistant (Rif(r)) mutants of the isolates were used in confirmatory pathogenicity tests. Resistance to the antibiotic was both stable and effective in differentiating between an inoculated Rif(r) strain, rifampicin-sensitive contaminants and/or endophytes. A series of inoculation methods was tested at various boll developmental stages and at different fruiting nodes on the plant. Field disease symptoms were reproduced by inoculating bolls at 2 weeks postanthesis with bacterial suspensions ranging from 10(3) to 10(6) CFU ml(-1). Pathogenic isolates were categorized as Pantoea agglomerans on the basis of phenotype testing, fatty acid profiling (similarity index = 0.94), and 16s ribosomal DNA sequence analysis (99% nucleotide identity). CONCLUSIONS: Pantoea agglomerans isolates from field-collected immature, diseased cotton caused comparable infection symptoms in greenhouse produced cotton fruit. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: In 1999, significant yield losses in SC cotton resulted from a previously unobserved seed and boll rot that has since been reported in other southeastern states. This study demonstrated a role of P. agglomerans in producing opportunistic bacterial seed and boll rot of cotton.  相似文献

The aquatic bugs Anisops bouvieri Kirkaldy 1704 (Heteroptera: Notonectidae), Diplonychus (=Sphaerodema) rusticus Fabricius 1781, and Diplonychus annulatus Fabricius 1781 (Heteroptera: Belostomatidae) are common members of the freshwater insect communities of the East Calcutta Wetlands along the eastern fringe of Kolkata, India. These insects are established predators of dipteran larvae and other organisms. A comparative account of their predatory efficiency was made using larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus Say 1823 in the laboratory. It was revealed that a single adult of A. bouvieri could consume 28–34 fourth-instar mosquito larvae per day, D. rusticus 11–87 fourth-instar mosquito larvae per day, and D. annulatus 33–122 fourth-instar mosquito larvae per day, depending upon the prey and predator densities. The mean predation rate of A. bouvieri and D. annulatus remained stable over a 6-day feeding period but varied for D. rusticus. The predatory impact (PI) values were 14.77–17.31, 46.9–55.73, and 61.74–72.72 larvae/day for A. bouvieri, D. rusticus, and D. annulatus, respectively. Compared to these, the clearance rate (CR) value range was 9.06–13.25 for A. bouvieri, 13.64–15.99 for D. rusticus, and 13.50–16.52 larvae l/day/predator for D. annulatus. The values of mutual interference, “m,” remained 0.06–0.78 for A. bouvieri, 0.003–0.25 for D. rusticus, and 0.09–0.27 for D. annulatus, and did not vary between the days. The difference in predatory efficiency, CR, and PI values varied significantly among the three predators, indicating the possible difference in the function as predators occupying the same guild. It can be assumed that these predators play an important role in larval population regulation of mosquitoes and thereby impart an effect on species composition and interactions in the aquatic insect communities of the wetlands and other similar habitats where they occur.  相似文献

Aim  To examine the impacts of climate change on endemic birds, which are of global significance for conservation, on a continent with few such assessments. We specifically assess projected range changes in relation to the Important Bird Areas (IBAs) network and assess the possible consequences for conservation.
Location  South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland.
Methods  The newly emerging ensemble modelling approach is used with 50 species, four climate change models for the period 2070–2100 and eight bioclimatic niche models in the statistical package biomod . Model evaluation is done using the receiver operating characteristic and the recently introduced true skill statistic. Future projections are made considering two extreme assumptions: species have full dispersal ability and species have no dispersal ability. A consensus forecast is identified using principal components analysis. This forecast is interpreted in terms of the IBA network. An irreplaceability analysis is used to highlight priority IBAs for conservation attention in terms of climate change.
Results  The majority of species (62%) are predicted to lose climatically suitable space. Five species lose at least 85% of their climatically suitable space. Many IBAs lose species (41%; 47 IBAs) and show high rates of species turnover of more than 50% (77%; 95 IBAs). Highly irreplaceable regions for endemic species become highly localized under climate change, meaning that the endemic species analysed here experience similar range contractions to maintain climate niches.
Main conclusions  The South African IBAs network is likely to become less effective for conserving endemic birds under climate change. The irreplaceability analysis identified key refugia for endemic species under climate change, but many of these areas are not currently IBAs. In addition, many of these high-priority areas that are IBAs fall outside the current formal protected areas network.  相似文献

1. Studies have shown that Cry proteins of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis expressed in transgenic plants can be acquired by nontarget herbivores and predators. A series of studies under field and controlled conditions was conducted to investigate the extent to which Cry1Ac protein from Bt transgenic cotton reaches the third trophic level and to measure the amount of protein that herbivores can acquire and expose to predators. 2. Levels of Cry1Ac in Bt cotton leaves decreased over the season. Among herbivores (four species), Cry1Ac was detected in lepidopteran larvae and the amount varied between species. Among predators (seven species), Cry1Ac was detected in Podisus maculiventris and Chrysoperla rufilabris. 3. In the greenhouse, only 14% of the Cry1Ac detected in the prey (Spodoptera exigua larvae) was subsequently found in the predator P. maculiventris. Detection of Cry1Ac protein in Orius insidiosus, Geocoris punctipes and Nabis roseipennis was probably limited by the amount of prey consumed that had fed on Bt cotton. 4. Purified Cry1Ac was acquired by the small predatory bug G. punctipes but at much higher concentration than found in plants or in lepidopteran larvae. 5. Bt protein was shown to move through prey to the third trophic level. Predatory heteropterans acquired Cry1Ac from prey fed Bt cotton, but acquisition was dependent on the concentration of Cry1Ac conveyed by the prey and the amount of prey consumed. The type and availability of prey capable of acquiring the protein, coupled with the generalist feeding behaviour of the most common predators in the cotton ecosystem, probably constrain the flow of Cry1Ac through trophic levels.  相似文献

Length–biomass equations are relatively easy and cost-effective for deriving insect biomass. However, the exact relationship can vary between taxa and geographical regions. Semi-aquatic bugs are abundant and are indicators of freshwater quality, but there are no studies investigating the effect of habitat disturbance on their biomass, although it is useful in assessing ecological processes. We identified the best-fit length–biomass models to predict the biomass of semi-aquatic bugs (Hemiptera, Gerromorpha) collected from streams in Sabah, Malaysia. We used 259 juvenile and adult semi-aquatic bugs to compare a range of plausible length–biomass functions, and to assess whether relationships differed across the following families and body forms: (1) Cylindrostethinae, Gerrinae, and Ptilomerinae, which are subfamilies within Gerridae consisting of small-to-large bugs that have long and slender bodies, (2) Halobatinae, a subfamily within Gerridae, consisting of small-to-medium bugs with wide heads and thoraxes as well as short abdomens, and (3) Veliidae, which are small bugs with stout bodies. Estimation used five fitting functions – linear regression, polynomial regression order 2, 3, and 4, and power regression – on the following groupings: three body forms combined; each body form with life stages (juvenile and adult) combined; and each body form with life stages separated. Power regressions were the best fit in predicting the biomass of semi-aquatic bugs across life stages and body forms, and the predictive power of models was higher when the biomass of different body forms was calculated separately (specifically for Halobatinae and Veliidae). Splitting by life stages did not always result in additional improvement. The equations from this study expand the scope of possible future ecological research on semi-aquatic bugs, particularly in Southeast Asia, by allowing more studies to consider biomass-related questions.  相似文献

RONSE DECRAENE L. P. AND SMETS E. F., 1993. The distribution and systematic relevance of the androecial character polymery . Two characters, viz. oligomery and polymery, have been previously proposed to circumscribe the localization of the androecium. Their distribution is more or less correlated with two groups of taxa: polymery is found in Magnoliidae, Caryophyllidae, Liliatae and part of Hamamelidae; oligomery is found in Dilleniidae, Rosidae, part of Hamamelidae and Asteridae. Polymery can be described by a number of character states, which are presented in a semophyletical scheme. Spiral polyandry, i.e. a multistaminate and spiral androecium, represents the plesiomorphic condition for all Magnoliophytina and is restricted to the polymerous group. Cyclization, induced by an arrangement of the perianth in trimerous whorls and a fractioning of the continuous plastochron, leads to polycycly, i.e. an arrangement of the stamens in numerous cycles; the outer stamens are usually inserted as pairs or in alternation with the inner perianth parts. From this configuration reduction series in different groups result in androecia with a lower number of stamen whorls (such as tetracycly, tricycly, dicycly and (ob)monocycly). The transition from trimery to pentamery induces a derived stamen configuration by the merging of two tepaline whorls and the loss of some stamens. für ther reductions accompanied evolution in trimerous flowers and led to conditions resembling diplostemony as observed in Caryophyllaceae, some Hamamelidaceae and Ranunculaceae. Secondary increases, as well as reductions of stamens within a whorl must be regarded as gradual variations of each character state. Different trends affecting the number and position of the stamens can globally be traced along different lines. Polymery is consistent with other floral characters, such as the nature of perianth, vasculature (axial and cortical systems) and merosity. The androecium of a number of families and their relationships are discussed.  相似文献
