This research determined the relationships between blood lead level and zinc protoporphyrin (ZnPROTO), protoporphyrin IX (PROTO), and free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) levels in a group of 18 ring teal ducks. Blood samples were drawn from two groups of ring teal ducks as part of the routine health maintenance program of the New York Zoological Park. One group of six teals had been exposed to what is believed to be lead-contaminated dust, while the second group of twelve teals was unexposed. Blood samples were analyzed for lead by flameless atomic absorption and for protoporphyrins by fluorescence. Blood lead level and log blood lead level had positive correlations with each of the protoporphyrins: the logarithmic correlations were better than the nonlogarithmic correlations, and PROTO correlated better than ZnPROTO. With one exception, PROTO levels were higher than ZnPROTO levels. The results suggest that PROTO, FEP, or ZnPROTO could serve as a biological indicator of lead poisoning in ring teal ducks. 相似文献

Chromosome numbers for 26 different species of the generaPiper, Peperomia andPothomorphe (Piperaceae) are reported. The basic chromosome numbers are 2n = 26, x = 13 (Piper, Pothomorphe) and 2n = 22, x = 11 (Peperomia), polyploid series are characteristic forPiper andPeperomia. Piper has the smallest chromosomes and prochromosomal interphase nuclei,Peperomia the largest ones and mostly reticulate to euchromatic nuclei.Pothomorphe is intermediate in both characters. The karyomorphological differences betweenPothomorphe andPiper underline their generic separation. Interspecific size variation of chromosomes occurs inPiper andPeperomia. In adult endotherms—birds and mammals—mortality rates are lower in flying than non-flying species. Rates vary with size, but allowing for this they are higher in penguins than flying birds, and in rodents than bats. These observations are most simply explained in terms of predation since flight, allowing movement in three dimensions, increases the chances of escape.
There are various problems in obtaining and comparing data on rates of mortality and this partly explains a wide scattering of points. Nevertheless the main results are statistically significant, mostly at P<0.001. Amongst birds, there are several other significant differences. Mortality rates are lower at lower latitudes, and in aquatic compared to terrestrial species, with cliff-nesters having lower rates than other aquatic birds and co-operative breeders than other terrestrial ones. Summary The calcium ingestion of Malabar Giant Squirrels Ratufa indica (Sciuridae) was examined at two sites, Magod and Bhimashankar, in western India. In females at Magod a positive correlation was found between rates of calcium ingestion from food resources and the contribution of those resources to the daily diet. This relationship was true for all females at Magod irre-spective of their reproductive condition. This relationship was neither significant for males at the same site nor for both sexes at Bhimashankar. A differential requirement for calcium between the sexes and the occurrence of higher rates of calcium ingestion or the probable presence of more easily digestible calcium at Bhimashankar are postulated to explain the observed phenomenon. The symbiotic effectiveness of Bradyrhizobium strains isolated from three species of Parasponia and from legumes were compared
on Parasponia grown in Leonard-jars. Effectiveness of each symbiotic association was estimated from dry weight and total nitrogen
of shoots and nodules of plants grown on medium free of combined nitrogen. Twenty strains isolated from three species of Parasponia
were found to vary in their effectiveness on P. andersonii, the least effective fixing one fifth of the nitrogen of the most effective strains. The outcome of the symbiosis was not
associated with the host source of the test strain. P. andersonii, P. rugosa and P. rigida responded differently to a selection of seven strains of Parasponia Bradyrhizobium; some strains were either ineffective
or fully effective on each host, while others varied in their symbiotic performance. P. andersonii fixed significantly (P < 0.001) larger quantities of nitrogen than either P. rugosa or P. rigida with p. rigida being the least effective. In contrast to Bradyrhizobium strains from Parasponia spp. which formed nodules rapidly (within 11–20 days), nine strains isolated from legumes required between 25 and 74 days
to form partially effective nodules. The thre Parasponia species formed relatively large quantities of nodule tissue relative to the amount of nitrogen fixed and shoot dry matter
produced. The Bradyrhizobium isolated from Parasponia plants growing in Papua New Guinea soils could be grouped together on

The importance of litter to nutrient and organic matter storage and the possible influence of species selection on soil fertility
in ten stands each consisting of a separate tree species were examined in this study. The plantations had been grown under
similar conditions in an arboretum in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. The species involved were: Anthocephalus chinensis, Eucalyptus × patentinervis, E. saligna, Hernandia sonora, Hibiscus elatus, Khaya nyasica, Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis, P. elliottii var. densa, Swietenia macrophylla, and Terminalia ivorensis. After 26 yr, litter mass ranged from 5 mg ha-1 in the H. sonora stand to 27.2 Mg ha-1 in the P. caribaea stand. Nutrients in the litter (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) also varied widely, but stands were ranked in different order when ranked
by nutrients in the litter than then ranked according to accumulation of mass. Only E. saligna and A. chinensis stands were ranked similarly in accumulation of both nutrients and mass, and the stand of H. elatus was ranked higher with respect to nutrient accumulation than to accumulation of mass. The nutrient concentration in standing
leaf litter generally increased in the order of recently fallen <old intact< fragmented. Nutrient concentration of standing
leaf litter appears to increase with age and depth in the litter layer. The amount of nutrients stored in the litter compartment
of these plantations was in the same order of magnitude as the quantity of available nutrients in the top 10-cm of mineral
soil. Total litter mass was negatively correlated with the mass-weighted concentration of N, K, and Mg. The same relationship
was found for Ca in the leaf litter and N in the fine wood litter compartments. In some stands (notably P. caribaea, P. elliottii, and E. saligna), leaf litter derived from species other than the species planted in that particular stand had higher nutrient concentration
than leaf litter from the planted species. Soils of the 10 stands were classified in the same soil series and had similar
texture (clay soils). However, significantly different chemical characteristics were found. Results obtained by analysis of
covariance and by limiting comparisons to adjacent stands with similar soil texture, indicate that different species have

Bacterial abundance and production in a vertical profile in Lake Kariba (17dgS), Zimbabwe, were affected by solar irradiance. At the surface, 1.87 × 109 bacteria 1–1 were found and abundance peaked at 10 m (2.5 × 109 bacteria l-1), then decreasing with depth. Bacterial reproduction at the surface(0.145 µg C1–1 h–1) was nearly four times less than the production at 10 m although bacterial numbers were only 26% less. Thus, bacterial production per cell was lower at the surface than deeper down, suggesting that bacterial production is inhibited at the surface.Bacterial production in GF/F filtered lake water in Whirl Pack bags showed an exponential decrease down to 3 m depth. The inhibition was well in accordance with light extinction in the UV region. Phosphatase activity was low in light exposed bags compared to dark, indicating photolysis of extracellular enzymes, or phototransformation of recalcitrant DOM, which substitutes enzyme activity. Hypolimnetic enzyme activity was less affected by solar light than epilimnetic. 相似文献

A cladistic analysis of the genusAnisopappus (Asteraceae: Inuleae) has been undertaken. A hypothesis of species interrelationships in the genus is presented for the first time. The analysis also includedArctotis (Arctoteae), used as outgroup, and five additional genera from theInuleae: Geigeria, Calostephane, Asteriscus, Buphthalmum, Pulicaria, andInula. It is concluded thatAnisopappus is a monophyletic group situated at the base of the tribe, diagnosed by, e.g., their obtuse stylar sweeping-hairs. The species with acute sweeping-hairs were found to be derived within the genus. In Venezuela, the alien grasses Melinis minutiflora Beauv. and Hyparrhenia rufa (Nees.) Stapf tend to displace the native savanna plant community dominated by Trachypogon plumosus (Humb. and Bonpl.) Nees. This occurs in either relatively wetter and fertile highland savannas or in drier and less fertile lowland savannas. Although the native and aliens are perennial C4 grasses, higher net assimilation leaf biomass per plant and germination rate of the latter are some causes for their higher growth rates and for their competitive success. The objective of this study is to compare seasonal tissue energy, N, P and K concentrations and the calculated construction costs (CC) between the native grass and either one of the alien grasses from lowland and highland savannas. We predict that, in order to out-compete native plants, alien grasses should be more efficient in resource use as evidenced by lower tissue energy and nutrient concentrations and CC.Tissue energy and nutrient concentration were measured throughout the year and compared between M. minutiflora and the co-occurring local population of T. plumosus in a highland savanna and between H. rufa and its neighbor local population of T. plumosus in a lowland savanna. CC was calculated from energy, N and ash concentrations considering ammonium as the sole N source. Differences between co-occurring species, T. plumosus populations, seasons, and organs were analyzed with ANOVA.Highland and lowland grasses differed in concentration and allocation of energy and nutrients whereas the differences between alien and native grasses were specific for each pair considered. Highland grasses had higher energy, N, P and CC than lowland grasses. These variables were always lowest in the culms. In the more stressed lowland site, tissue energy and nutrient concentrations decreased significantly during the dry season except in the roots of both grasses which had the highest energy and nutrients concentrations during the drought. This seasonal response was more marked in the local lowland population of T. plumosus in which maximum CC alternated seasonally between leaves and roots. Energy and nutrient concentrations and CC were the lowest in H. rufa. In the lowland savannas, the higher efficiency of resource use in the invader grass contributes to its higher competitive success through increased growth rate. In the highlands, overall tissue energy concentration and CC, but not N nor P concentration, were lower in the fast growing M. minutiflora but seasonal differences were lacking. The higher leaf CC in T. plumosus can be attributed to the higher proportion of sclerenchyma tissue which is more expensive to construct. Considering CC, both fast growing alien grasses are more efficient in resource use than the co-occurring native grass. However, the role of CC explaining the competitive success of the former, through higher growth rates, is more evident in the more stressful environment of the lowland savanna. 相似文献
