Eusynaptomyces benjaminii is described as a new species of the ectoparasiticLaboulbeniales (Ascomycetes). It exists only on two very restricted areas of the body (= position specifity) of its hostEnochrus testaceus (F.) (Coleoptera, Hydrophilidae): on the claws of the right fore-leg and on the lower side of the frontal border of the pronotum. In these two habitatsEu. benjaminii develops two extremely different growth-forms. Male and female hosts are parasitized on somewhat different parts of their body. This can be explained by their mating behaviour. The growth-forms ofEu. benjaminii are so different that one ignorant of the biology of hosts and parasites, might regard them as members of different species or even genera. They are to be interpreted as adaptations of one species to growth positions and mating behaviour of the host. There is no sex-of-host specifity as assumed by certain authors for several species of theLaboulbeniales.

Dating of the human-ape splitting by a molecular clock of mitochondrial DNA   总被引:64,自引:0,他引:64  
Summary A new statistical method for estimating divergence dates of species from DNA sequence data by a molecular clock approach is developed. This method takes into account effectively the information contained in a set of DNA sequence data. The molecular clock of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was calibrated by setting the date of divergence between primates and ungulates at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary (65 million years ago), when the extinction of dinosaurs occurred. A generalized leastsquares method was applied in fitting a model to mtDNA sequence data, and the clock gave dates of 92.3±11.7, 13.3±1.5, 10.9±1.2, 3.7±0.6, and 2.7±0.6 million years ago (where the second of each pair of numbers is the standard deviation) for the separation of mouse, gibbon, orangutan, gorilla, and chimpanzee, respectively, from the line leading to humans. Although there is some uncertainty in the clock, this dating may pose a problem for the widely believed hypothesis that the bipedal creatureAustralopithecus afarensis, which lived some 3.7 million years ago at Laetoli in Tanzania and at Hadar in Ethiopia, was ancestral to man and evolved after the human-ape splitting. Another likelier possibility is that mtDNA was transferred through hybridization between a proto-human and a protochimpanzee after the former had developed bipedalism.  相似文献

Summary The motile behaviour of mitochondria in the ovarian trophic cord of the red cotton bug, Dysdercus intermedius, was observed optically using video-enhanced differential interference contrast (AVEC-DIC) microscopy. The motion of 258 video-recorded mitochondria was analysed of which 10%–30% were found to move during the observation periods. Of the moving mitochondria 76% travelled towards the oocyte with an average velocity of 3.37 m/ min, and 24% towards the tropharium with 2.84 m/min. The movement was found to be basically of the saltatory type I as known from nerve axons characterized by the absence of directional reversal. In some cases short periods of interrupted motion of type II, i.e. with local oscillations, were observed. Individual mitochondria often showed velocity variations during the excursions. The hemipteran trophic cords are known to contain numerous parallel microtubules. As the observed type of mitochondrial motility resembles axonal transport, a modified transport hypothesis is presented for the microtubule-based motility of organelles in the nurse strands of telotrophic insect ovarioles.  相似文献

Patterns of seed and fruit production ofBauhinia ungulata, a small tree legume indigenous in tropical America, were studied in Costa Rica. Only about 8% of flowers produced fruits. The average pod had 19 ovules and about two thirds of these began seed development, with mature pods containing an average of 9.7 mature undamaged seeds. About half of the mature pods were damaged by herbivores and within these, 27% of ovules or seeds had been eaten. Among trees there was no significant variation in pod production, but the number of ovules per pod and seed production per pod varied significantly. Within infructescences most pods were retained at middle positions. Within pods, the probability of an ovule developing into a seed increased toward the distal end. The pattern of seed and fruit production in this species agrees well in general with that reported for other neotropical legumes. The abortion of seeds and fruits can be regarded as a way of controlling maternal investment, and as a response to herbivory.  相似文献

A new approach to the classification ofPinus based on analyses of umbo and mucro on the cone scales is presented. It matches the basic frame of existing classification systems and allows determination of sections or even species. In particular, the subdivision ofDiploxylon pines into groups with centric or excentric mucro separates most Eurasian from American species. Fossils with well preserved mucro now can be grouped better and determined with more accuracy. Furthermore, umbo analyses which consider the ontogeny of the conelets and the shift from primitive to derived character states from the apex to the basis of mature cones lead to an additional evaluation of relationships and evolutionary lines among pines.

Synopsis Crayfish are not native to the Colorado River basin (CRB), however they are now established in portions of the mainstem and in many tributaries. I used density manipulation experiments in a laboratory setting to determine intra- and interspecific competition for food between Orconectes virilis, an aggressive polytrophic crayfish now common in the CRB, and two native fishes: Gila chub, Gila intermedia, and flannelmouth sucker, Catostomus latipinnis. I tested each fish species in separate trials. Growth of Gila chub decreased when animal densities increased, however they were more affected by intraspecific competition than by crayfish presence. In contrast, growth of flannelmouth suckers was more affected by crayfish than by intraspecific competition. Crayfish growth was not significantly altered by presence of either fish. Crayfish thus reduced fish growth by competition for food, but the effect differed markedly between the two species. An erratum to this article can be found at .  相似文献

For group-living animals, the maintenance of a position in the social hierarchy may be associated with physiological costs such as increased stress and energy expenditure or suppressed immune functions. In this study, we experimentally manipulated the social status of house sparrows so that each bird experienced two social environments in random sequence: being dominant and subordinate. For 14 males, we investigated how corticosterone concentrations, energy expenditure and immune functions were affected by these changes in social status position. We found that the cost of maintaining a social status position differed between individuals and were related to individual body size. Birds with small body size had increased costs in terms of increased stress responses and reduced cell-mediated immune responses while being experimentally kept as dominants, while birds with large body size had increased costs while they were subordinates. We also found that birds with increased energetic and immunological costs as dominants obtained a low status position in the large group, while birds with increased costs as subordinates obtained a high status position in the large group. In summary, we found that the costs associated with the maintenance of social status position differed between individuals and was related to the individuals' body size. Furthermore, in a large group, individuals maintained a social status position that minimized energetic and immunological costs.  相似文献

In contrast to shallow lakes, factors affecting trophic state in ponds are not well described, and may include unique effects related to pond size. We examined the interdependence of ambient N and P, phytoplankton biomass, light penetration and stratification in 13 ponds of varying area and mean depth in Chester County, PA (USA) during March, May and July of 2002. Seven of the ponds had primarily residential watersheds, and six were farm ponds. The ponds were all eutrophic or hypereutrophic based on Carlsons Trophic State Index, but varied widely in nutrient content (from 20 to 179 g total P/L and from 683 to 3895 g total N/L) and size (surface areas from 0.1 to 1.7 ha, mean depths from 0.6 to 1.8 m). Although total N (TN) typically declined while total P (TP) rose from March to July, the ratio TN/TP remained sufficiently high that algal growth was probably limited by P during the study period. Phytoplankton biomass (as chlorophyll-a) was positively correlated with TP and negatively correlated with Secchi depth on all three sampling dates. Despite their shallow nature, the ponds were frequently stratified with near-anoxic hypolimnia later in the study period; mixing depth was greater in ponds with greater light penetration. Residual variation in chlorophyll-a unexplained by TP, and in Secchi depth unexplained by chlorophyll-a, was related to either mean depth or surface area, suggesting that trophic state in ponds may be controlled differently than in much larger, shallow lakes.  相似文献

Measurements of freshwater mussel tissue are potentially very useful for determining base-level isotopic values for food web studies in aquatic environments. As long-lived, filter-feeding organisms, mussels have the potential to spatially and temporally average the isotopic baseline signal. Following from earlier studies that focused on lake environments, this study investigates the stable carbon and nitrogen isotope ratios in tissue of the river dwelling freshwater mussel, Margaritifera falcata, in two extensively studied northern California coast range rivers, the South Fork Eel and Navarro. We highlight advantages and challenges for using riverine mussel isotopes as indicators of baselines. 13C of primary producers is known to vary with habitat along the South Fork Eel channel, but our measurements show no such variations, demonstrating that riverine mussels do preserve a spatially averaged measure of instream derived food sources. Mean 13C and 15N are shown to be markedly different in the two rivers, reflecting differences in food sources and possibly watershed land use. We also found that 15N of mussel tissue increased by approximately 2 with mussel age in both rivers. This suggests it is important to consider age and size effects when estimating baseline values from mussel tissues.  相似文献

Pharaonis phoborhodopsin (ppR, or pharaonis sensory rhodopsin II, NpsRII) is a sensor for the negative phototaxis of Natronomonas (Natronobacterium) pharaonis. Arginine 72 of ppR corresponds to Arg-82 of bacteriorhodopsin, which is a highly conserved residue among microbial rhodopsins. Using various Arg-72 ppR mutants, we obtained the following results: 1). Arg-72(ppR) together possibly with Asp-193 influenced the pK(a) of the counterion of the protonated Schiff base. 2). The M-rise became approximately four times faster than the wild-type. 3). Illumination causes proton uptake and release, and the pH profiles of the sequence of these two proton movements were different between R72A mutant and the wild-type; it is inferred that Arg-72 connects the proton transfer events occurring at both the Schiff base and an extracellular proton-releasing residue (Asp-193). 4). The M-decays of Arg-72 mutants were faster ( approximately 8-27 folds at pH 8 depending on mutants) than the wild-type, implying that the guanidinium prevents the proton transfer from the extracellular space to the deprotonated Schiff base. 5), The proton-pumping activities were decreased for mutants having increased M-decay rates, but the extent of the decrease was smaller than expected. The role of Arg-72 of ppR on the photochemistry was discussed.  相似文献
