Morphology,physics, chemistry and biology of Lake Rara in West Nepal   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0  
A survey of oligotrophic Lake Rara, the biggest lake in Nepal, was carried out from 1982 till 1984. Mean depth is 100 m, and maximum depth is 167 m. The surface area covers 9.8 km2, and the lake contains 0.98 km3 volume of water. Transparency was about 16 m, photoquantum yield decreased exponentially with depth below 5 m, and the extinction coefficient was 8.3 × 10−2. The concentration of Chl.-a was in the range of 0.06–0.46 mg m−3, and total nitrogen was 18–30 μg 1−1. The whole water column was well oxygenated. Primary productivity was extremely low. It has more than 30 inflowing brooks and one outlet. The water quality of the brooks changes drastically with their location. The pH, electrical conductivity, and EDTA hardness in the waters from a landslide area were high. In the waters from a rich pine forest they were extremely low. The zooplankton consisted of two species of protozoa, five species of rotifers, two species of Cladocera, and two species of Copepoda. The zooplankton density range was 6200–16200 individuals m−3. The minimum was on November 11th, 1983 and the maximum on August 19th, 1983.  相似文献

Biomanipulation as a tool for lake restoration is discussed mainly using literature data. It is based on the exploitation of the interactions both within and between the trophic levels in an aquatic ecosystem. Important among the interactions are: competition for light and nutrients between aquatic macrophytes and phytoplankton and among different phytoplankton species; grazing by planktonic and benthic filter feeders; and size-selective predation by fish. In several case studies biomanipulation has proved to be successful in restorating mildly eutrophic small waterbodies. However, for long-term stability of the restored ecosystems supplementary measures like reducing the external nutrient loadings are needed. The feasibility of the different biomanipulation measures to improve the water quality in shallow Dutch lakes is discussed. Preliminary results on biomanipulation experiments in enclosures withOscillatoria agardhii and the benthic filter feederDreissena polymorpha are given.  相似文献

The interdependence between changes in growth and water relations after waterlogging was investigated by recording simultaneously growth, transpiration, water potential, turgor, leaf diffusion resistance and abscisic acid content in Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. bruine Noord-Hollandse. Growth was inhibited immediately after flooding, whereas transpiration decreased gradually to a low level in about three days. The first two days after flooding a small increase in abscisic acid content in the leaves was observed which was accompanied by an increase in diffusion resistance. The increase in abscisic acid content could result from an inhibited export from the leaves. After the first two days a decrease in water potential and turgor was accompanied by a drastic increase in both abscisic acid content and diffusion resistance. This large increase in abscisic acid content occurred before the turgor had reached its minimum value. The change in diffusion resistance kept showing a lag of about one day with the change in abscisic acid content. The possibility is discussed that besides abscisic acid also its metabolite phaseic acid is involved in stomatal closure. After the formation of adventitious roots on the hypocotyl, abscisic acid level, diffusion resistance, water potential and turgor returned to the control values. Transpiration showed a slow recovery from the sixth day after flooding, whereas growth was inhibited for at least nine days. A remarkable similarity exists between our observations on the responses of bean plants to flooding and the well known responses to drought.  相似文献

Summary The most widely used technique of leaf water potential measurements is with the Scholander pressure chamber. Representative leaf water potential values require many determinations on individual leaves and this can be time consuming in large fields or experiments with multiple treatments. This paper describes a method of obtaining a mean value more rapidly, by using two leaves in the pressure chamber at the same time, but recording the end point of each leaf separately.  相似文献

At Big Run Bog, aSphagnum-dominated peatland in the unglaciated Appalachian Plateau of West Virginia, significant spatial variation in the physical and chemical properties of the peat and in surface and subsurface (30 cm deep) water chemistry was characterized. The top 40 cm of organic peat at Big Run Bog had average values for bulk density of 0.09 g · cm–3, organic matter concentration of 77%, and volumetric water content of 88%. Changes in physical and chemical properties within the peat column as a function of depth contributed to different patterns of seasonal variation in the chemistry of surface and subsurface waters. Seasonal variation in water chemistry was related to temporal changes in plant uptake, organic matter decomposition and element mineralization, and to varying redox conditions associated with fluctuating water table levels. On the average, total Ca, Mg, and N concentrations in Big Run Bog peat were 33, 15, and 1050 mol · g–1, respectively; exchangeable Ca and Mg concentrations were 45 and 14 eq · g–1 , respectively. Surface water pH averaged 4.0 and Ca++ concentrations were less than 50 eq · L–1 . These chemical variables have all been used to distinguish bogs from fens. Physiographically, Big Run Bog is a minerotrophic fen because it receives inputs of water from the surrounding forested upland areas of its watershed. However, chemically, Big Run Bog is more similar to true ombrotrophic bogs than to minerotrophic fens.  相似文献

The effects of mineral salts constituting water hardness on fecundity ofDaphnia magna were assessed. Of the salts tested, increased concentrations of NaHCO3 and MgSO4 had no effect on fecundity, CaSO4 significantly increased fecundity, and KCl significantly reduced fecundity. The number of offspring produced per daphnid was correlative to the CaSO4 concentration at CaSO4 concentrations between 91 and 2100 mg/ℓ. The effects of CaSO4 on daphnid fecundity could influence the interpretive outcome of industrial wastewater toxicity tests using this species when the waste and dilution waters contain different concentrations of CaSO4. It is recommended that when performing these tests, dilution water be sampled at the intake site of the industry's water source, thus assuring initial comparability of the waste and dilution waters. The CaSO4 content of the water prior to and after industrial use should be determined to identify any alterations of CaSO4 concentration during use. Identification of CaSO4 concentration differences can aid in the interpretation of effects associated with the wastewater.  相似文献

In urban areas with a separate sewerage system, the stormwater runoff is discharged into surface waters. A study on the effects of stormwater sewer discharges on the composition of the aquatic community in urban waters was carried out in two areas with a primarily residential use in the new town of Lelystad. The aquatic organisms considered included hydrophytes, epiphytic diatoms, filamentous algae and macroinvertebrates.The results indicate that the stormwater sewer discharges cause a slight change in the composition of the aquatic community. The water in the urban surface waters can be characterized as eutrophic and - toa-mesosaprobic. Near stormwater sewer outfalls the water tends to the more polluteda-mesosaprobic state. The shifts in the composition of the aquatic community could be traced primarily on the basis of a number of epiphytic diatoms and macroinvertebrates (in particular some Diptera and Trichoptera). Most hydrophytes, filamentous algae and the remaining epiphytic diatoms and macroinvertebrates (in particular water beetles and water mites) turned out to be of little or no use in this respect.Because the investigation was carried out in an unusually dry summer, the results probably underestimate the effects of stormwater discharges on the aquatic community.  相似文献

Summary There are many contradictory observations on the mechanohydraulic relation of growing higher plant cells and tissues. Graphical analysis of the simultaneous equations which govern irreversible wall yielding and water absorption has made more comprehensive the understanding of this relation when relative growth rate is plotted against turgor pressure. It suggests that some respiration-dependent and auxin sensitive process might regulate the difference of osmotic potential between cells and water source. Based on anatomical and electrophysiological knowledge of the pea stem xylem, we propose the wall canal system as the mechanism of respiration-dependent water uptake which is sensitive to auxin. This system consists of the xylem apoplastic walls, the xylem proton pumps, active solute uptake system and cell membranes. In the simplest case, third-order simultaneous differential equations are involved. Numerical analysis showed that net uptake of solutes enables water to be taken up against an opposing gradient of water potential. The behaviour of this wall canal system describes well the mechano-hydraulic relation of enlarging plant cells and tissues.
