Hanchard’s Spectre of Race is an important and far-reaching piece of scholarship that makes important contributions to the field of poltiical science and to our understandings of democracy, statecraft and the construction and management of difference. This article analyzes the strengths of Hanchard’s comparative methodology while also raising a number of questions about the nature and functioning of racial regimes. First, it asks where capitalist development generally, and material relations and struggles more specifically, are in hanchard’s theory of race, democracy and statecraft. More specifically, it calls for engagement with the historic, but recently revived school of studies in racial capitalism to think critically about the logic of racial states and their different manifestations. Second, the article raises a number of questions about the coherence of racial regimes, across arms of the state, across time, and across different groups. 相似文献

ABSTRACTCan the negative aspects of incorporation – discrimination, marginalization, and frustration with life in a country of settlement – help us to understand next generation transnationalism? This question is applied to a small, non-representative sample of next generation individuals involved in Mexican and Salvadoran transnational political and philanthropic organizations operating in California and Washington, DC. The findings suggest that negative incorporation had some explanatory potential for the transnational mobilization of some respondents. However, the study also suggests the multiple trajectories and contexts that give rise to next generation transnationalism. Involvement in cross-border organizations appears not only to be a refuge for those who perceive the country of settlement negatively or a means through which individuals can respond to negative experiences; it can also be pursued by individuals that positively identify with the country of settlement and perceive its values favourably, indicating the need for a more synthetic understanding of this phenomenon. 相似文献

The established consensus in sociology is to explain the transformations of the ethnic identities of migrants through processes by which the migrants combine features they share with co-ethnics with characteristics they adopt from other groups of residents. This conceptualization, however, works on the assumption that it is the differences and contradictions between the elements in the ethnic identities of the migrants, and the characteristics of other groups of residents, that motivate the transformations of migrant ethnic identities. Therefore, processes by which migrants adopt characteristics from other residents are understood to typically decrease the migrants’ differences from them. This analysis of the ethnic identity transformations of Muslims of Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, and mixed ethnic origin in Hong Kong refutes the validity of this interpretation. It shows that adopting characteristics from non-Muslim Chinese residents supported establishing multi-ethnic Islamic practices which, in turn, accentuated the differences of the Muslims from these majorities. 相似文献

Michael Hanchard’s the Spectre of Race: How Discrimination Haunts Western Democracy is a sophisticated examination of the disciplinary absence and seething presence of race in the subfield and substance of comparative politics. Hanchard’s analysis reveals a genealogy of how certain concepts, such as political culture, came to be institutionalized in the discipline. Because disciplines discipline, the resultant marginalization of race in comparative politics is itself an act of power. Many of his insights are revelatory, though a more explicit excavation of racial transnationalism is warranted. Such an effort would: first, demonstrate that the transnational “entanglements” Hanchard details are even more knotted than originally presumed; second, challenge the conflation of racialization and colonialism; and third, question whether liberal democratic inclusion is possible or even worth the price of the ticket. 相似文献

This article focuses on ageing in transnationalism. Drawing on the experiences of Italians in the UK as a paradigmatic example of settled European migrants, it explores the lived experiences of this group of older migrants. Using Levitt and Glick Schiller's framework, it concentrates first on migrants' ways of being and then on their ways of belonging. The article argues that a transnational lens is necessary to understand the experiences of older migrants and that a focus on older people needs to be incorporated into studies of transnationalism. Through a discussion of their narratives and experiences, the article offers a long view on the migration process and brings attention to the significance of gender, time and the life course to understand both migrants' transnationalism and their integration. 相似文献

This review focuses on John Rex and Robert Moore's study of migrant settlement and community relations in the Sparkbrook area of Birmingham, UK in the early 1960s. The review argues that this study, now almost fifty years old, anticipated a number of the key themes that characterize and preoccupy the current debates on migration and complex urban communities such as migrant networks and social capital, super-diversity, patterns of residence and transnationlism. The review suggests that the study has enduring value not only as a historical sociological text but in terms of the ways in which its findings resonate with contemporary urban environments and theoretical concerns. 相似文献

In this article, I highlight the challenges, tensions, and affinities between Latino educational anthropology and diaspora studies. Some of the urgent questions include attention to new Latino destinations, transnationalism, and Latino diversity. It concludes by suggesting future pathways through Latina feminist thought. 相似文献

This book sets out to challenge what it calls ‘transnationalism’ by pointing out the crucial role of national states, introduces a bipolar model of emigration and immigration contexts, and raises interesting and worthwhile questions about societal overlap between states – giving particular attention to conflicts between migrants and those left behind in the countries of emigration. As such, the book is a welcome addition to the by now voluminous literature on transnationalism. It is doubtful, however, whether the author has sufficiently engaged with the existing transnationally oriented literature to reorient transnational studies. Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether this reorientation will yield new insights in future studies. 相似文献

For much of its colonial history, the Netherlands experienced little contact with its island possessions in the Caribbean.
Subsequent Dutch policy was formulated in the shadow of the Netherlands primary concern with its prosperous colony of Indonesia.
The 1985 closing of the oil refineries in Aruba and Curacao, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba’s “status aparte” in 1986 triggered
a mass migration from those Dutch “overseas countries” to the Netherlands. These recent migrations of thousands of Dutch post-colonial
citizens have added to the Dutch reevaluation of its colonial past and debates about its multicultural democratic future. 相似文献

Abstract The lives of transnational groups and individuals are marked by a spatial and imaginary split: a phenomenon wherein identity, belonging and representation have become increasingly elusive concepts, and the realm of the ‘cultural’ vastly important. And, the theoretical compasses of cosmopolitanism and transnationalism are particularly relevant and illuminating in considering social space, mediated communication and belonging in relation to urban diasporic communities and gendered subjectivities. The aim of this paper is to address expressions of identity and belonging at the intersection of online communicative practice and offline spatial formations, with a focus on the specificities of gendered constructions of sociality and subjectivity in the diaspora. 相似文献
