Macrovibrissae are specialized tactile sensory hairs present in most mammalian orders, used in maxillary mechanoreception or “face touch.” Some mammals have highly organized vibrissae and are able to “whisk” them. Movement of vibrissae is influenced by intrinsic vibrissa musculature, striated muscle bands that attach directly to the vibrissa capsule. It is unclear if primates have organized vibrissae or intrinsic vibrissa musculature and it is uncertain if they can move their vibrissae. The present study used histomorphological techniques to compare vibrissae among 19 primates and seven non‐primate mammalian taxa. Upper lips of these mammals were sectioned and processed for histochemical analysis. While controlling for phylogenetic effects the following hypotheses were tested: 1) mammals with well‐organized vibrissae possess intrinsic vibrissa musculature and 2) intrinsic vibrissa musculature is best developed in nocturnal, arboreal taxa. Our qualitative analyses show that only arboreal, nocturnal prosimians possess intrinsic musculature. Not all taxa that possessed organized vibrissae had intrinsic vibrissa musculature. Phylogenetic comparative analyses revealed a 70% probability that stem mammals, primates, and haplorhines possessed intrinsic vibrissa musculature and well‐organized vibrissae. These two traits most likely coevolved according to a discrete phylogenetic analysis. These results indicate that nocturnal, arboreal primates have the potential to more actively use their vibrissae in spatial recognition and navigation tasks than diurnal, more terrestrial species, but there is a clear phylogenetic signal involved in the evolution of primate vibrissae and “face touch.” Am J Phys Anthropol, 2013. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. 相似文献

Some benzophenones substituted with methyl, methoxy, hydroxy or halogen groups inhibited growth and induced chlorosis in various plants. The structure activity relationships about the chlorosis-inducing activity and the growth inhibitory activity of the 3-methyl-benzophenones were well expressed by use of hydrophobic contant π, and Hammett’s σ. Effects of materials extracted from potatoes with hot 80% ethanol on the course of phosphorylase reactions were examined. These materials had no effect on phosphorylase activities as determined by the rate of liberation of inorganic phosphate from glucose-1-phosphate in the presence of a large amount of primer; however, in the presence of a small amount of primer or in its absence, these materials had significant effects on the liberation of inorganic phosphate and starch formation. These results suggested the presence of a small amount of primers in these materials. Evidence was presented against the participation of d-enzyme on the formation of starch when partially purified preparations of potato phosphorylase or crude extracts from potatoes were used as the enzyme. 相似文献

Studies on lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the cells of Proteus mirabilis RMS-203 were focused upon reduction of lethal toxicity and of pyrogenicity by biological and chemical modification. A heptoseless mutant, strain N-434, was isolated by the use of phage resistancy as a tool. LPS from that heptoseless mutant was completely deficient in neutral sugars and mainly composed of 2-keto-deoxy-octonic acid (KDO), glucosamine and fatty acids. It revealed almost the same antitumor activity as LPS of the wild type but it was less toxic and less pyrogenic.Hydroxylaminolysis and reduction with LiAlH4 resulted in removal of fatty acids from LPS accompanied with decrease in lethal toxicity and antitumor acitivity but not in pyrogenicity.Lipid A fractions showed almost the same antitumor activity as intact LPS but less lethality and less pyrogenicity. 相似文献

We introduce the TA cloning antibody method for the high-fidelity PCR product amplified by family B DNA polymerase without purification. This method uses antibodies and Thermus aquaticus (Taq) DNA polymerase. The antibodies can inhibit only the activity of family B DNA polymerase, and Taq can co-work for A-tailing. The function of the NCgl1221-encoded protein of Corynebacterium glutamicum was analyzed using Bacillus subtilis as host because a method for preparing the giant provacuole required for electrophysiological studies has been established. Expression of NCgl1221 in a strain deficient in mscL and ykuT, both of which encode mechanosensitive channels, resulted in an 8.9-fold higher cell survival rate upon osmotic downshock than the control. Electrophysiological investigation showed that the giant provacuole prepared from this strain, expressing NCgl1221, exhibited significantly higher pressure-dependent conductance than the control. These findings show that the NCgl1221-encoded protein functions as a mechanosensitive channel. 相似文献

Abstract Biotin is present in nature either free or as biocytin, which is only degraded under the action of a specific enzyme: biotinidase. This enzyme is not included in analytical assays generally used. A method for sample preparation using biotinidase was developed in our laboratory before analysis by ELISA. Three cows equipped with duodenal and ileal cannulae were used to compare the effects of methods of sample preparation on calculations of apparent ruminal synthesis and intestinal absorption of biotin. There was no apparent ruminal synthesis of biotin, no matter whether free or total biotin was measured (p = 0.84). Results also suggested that rumen microbes cannot utilize nor degrade biocytin present in the feed. Estimates of apparent intestinal absorption were influenced by the sample preparation method (p = 0.002). Analysis of free biotin caused an artefact, suggesting intestinal synthesis of this vitamin; whereas determination of total biotin concentrations showed that absorption was taking place in the small intestine. 相似文献

The lattice Boltzmann method was employed to simulate electroosmotic driven flow and Debye layer screening in conducting electrolyte around a porous structure with average size of 40 nm. The charge screening around the nanopores was investigated by solving the vector-superpositioned potential equilibrium distribution function and adding electro-kinetic force term to the evolution equation. In this intermediate case of moderate Debye length, the electrophoresis problem becomes complicated. The motion of the particles distorts the screening cloud, which becomes asymmetric, resulting in very complex interactions between the electrolyte, the screening cloud and the particle; but the Electroosmotic Flow (EOF) behaviour was still considered based on the Helmoholtz-Smoluchowski model with adaptation to fit nanoporous flow in the porous structure. In the present approach, the flow in the nanopores is directly modelled; the detailed flow information can be obtained by simplifying the repeated macrostructure. Due to the symmetry of the domain, the size of computational domain can be largely reduced by less repeated spherical nanoparticles. Each pore of the medium contains several lattice nodes on the simplified curved edges and potential gradients are produced by adjusting the zeta potential value. The velocity results for pressure-driven and EOF flows agree well with the analytical solutions and recent experimental results. In particular, the interface between solid particles and fluids, the influences of porosity, solid particle diameter, yield stress and electric parameters in EOF were investigated. The anti-adhesion effect of electroosmotic pumping effect was evaluated, and the pulsed DC was applied in order to enhance the performance of the electroosmotic pumping. The results demonstrate that the present lattice Boltzmann model is capable of modelling flow through nanoporous media at certain restrictions while some results deviate from the predictions based on the macroscopic theories. 相似文献

目的:比较传统教学模式和问题教学法及二者结合教学法的不同优劣势,找出物理诊断学最佳教学方法。传统教学模式采用授课为主的教学法(lecture based learning,LBL),单单强调了教师的重要性,而忽视学生的主观能动性,不利于调动和培养学生自学和灵活运用所学知识的能力。问题教学法(Problem-based learning,PBL),其强调学生自身的主观能动性,弱化了教师在教学中的主体地位,学生有偏离教学主线的风险。因而如果将LBL与PBL有机结合在一起,将可能有利于提高学生的学习效率和学习效果。方法:选取97名全科医学本科学员,在物理诊断课程教学过程中,采用完全随机的方法分为2组,采用LBL教学方法组48人,采用LBL结合PBL教学方法组49人,通过分别对理论、实践分层打分,确定优秀、合格、不合格的比率,采用Mann-Whitney U检验最终评定2组教学方法的授课效果。结果:在理论考试中,2组学员在优秀、合格、不合格的分层评定上均无明显差异(P0.05),而在实践考核中,LBL+PBL组学员成绩在优秀这一分层评定中,优于LBL组,差异具有统计学意义(P0.05)。结论:LBL和PBL教学方法结合应用于物理诊断教学中,符合物理诊断教学的特点,更容易被学生接受,对于知识的识记和应用更有好处,从而更利于培养高素质医学人才,值得在物理诊断教学中进一步推广。 相似文献
