Gerbilline rodents such as Allenby's gerbils (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi), when parasitized by fleas such as Synosternus cleopatrae pyramidis, devote long hours of grooming to remove the ectoparasites. Yet no detrimental energetic or immunological effects of the ectoparasites have been found in adult Allenby's gerbil. Why should gerbils go to such trouble? We tested for the various ways that fleas can negatively affect gerbils by manipulating flea infestation on gerbils and the presence of a fox. We demonstrate that gerbils responded to fleas by leaving resource patches at higher giving-up densities. Furthermore, they stayed in those resource patches less time and left them at higher quitting harvest rates so long as a fox was also present. When flea-ridden, gerbils also abandoned using vigilance to manage risk and relied mainly on time allocation. Thus, having fleas imposed a foraging cost similar in nature to that arising from the risk of predation from foxes and may be even larger in magnitude. More than that, the presence of fleas acted as a magnifier of foraging costs, especially those arising from the risk of predation. The fleas reduced the gerbils' foraging aptitude and altered how they went about managing risk of predation. We hypothesize that fleas reduce the attention that gerbils otherwise have for foraging and predator detection. We suggest that this is the major cost of ectoparasitism.  相似文献

Various instars of four different cladoceran species representing a wide spectrum of body size were grown at high food availability in the presence and in the absence of natural densities of an invertebrate predator, a cyclopoid copepod Acanthocyclops robustus (G.O. Sars). Daily weight increments calculated from individual weights at the end and at the beginning of each 1, 2 or 4 day experiment, showed that individual growth was more or less drastically retarded in the presence of the predator as well as when exposed to water in which the predator had been feeding. The data also showed that the effect of this invertebrate predator was more pronounced in small prey instars and small prey species that were more vulnerable to predation than large prey.  相似文献

How the coexistence of species is affected by the presence of multiple resources is a major question in microbial ecology. We experimentally demonstrate that differences in diauxic lags, which occur as species deplete their own environments and adapt their metabolisms, allow slow‐growing microbes to stably coexist with faster‐growing species in multi‐resource environments despite being excluded in single‐resource environments. In our focal example, an Acinetobacter species (Aci2) competitively excludes Pseudomonas aurantiaca (Pa) on alanine and on glutamate. However, they coexist on the combination of both resources. Experiments reveal that Aci2 grows faster but Pa has shorter diauxic lags. We establish a tradeoff between Aci2’s fast growth and Pa’s short lags as their mechanism for coexistence. We model this tradeoff to accurately predict how environmental changes affect community composition. We extend our work by surveying a large set of competitions and observe coexistence nearly four times as frequently when the slow‐grower is the fast‐switcher. Our work illustrates a simple mechanism, based entirely on supplied‐resource growth dynamics, for the emergence of multi‐resource coexistence.  相似文献

The evolution of human life history characteristics required dramatic shifts in energy allocation mechanisms compared with our primate ancestors. Thyroid hormones, such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), are sensitive to energy balance, and are significant determinants for both tissue-specific and whole-body metabolic rate. Thus, thyroid hormones are in part responsible for setting the body's overall energy budget and likely played an important role in the evolution of human life history patterns. We propose that the dynamics of mammalian T3 production, uptake, and action have evolved so that energy allocation prioritizes the high demands of brain development and functioning, often at the expense of growth and reproduction. This paper explores the role of thyroid hormone dynamics in the evolution of human encephalization, prolonged childhood and adolescence, long lifespans, reproduction, and human aging.  相似文献

Tradeoffs have long been an essential part of the canon explaining the maintenance of species diversity. Despite the intuitive appeal of the idea that no species can be a master of all trades, there has been a scarcity of linked demographic and physiological evidence to support the role of resource use tradeoffs in natural systems. Using five species of Chihuahuan desert summer annual plants, I show that demographic tradeoffs driven by short‐term soil moisture variation act as a mechanism to allow multiple species to partition a limiting resource. Specifically, by achieving highest fitness in either rainfall pulse or interpulse periods, variability reduces fitness differences through time that could promote coexistence on a limiting resource. Differences in fitness are explained in part by the response of photosynthesis to changing soil moisture. My results suggest that increasing weather variability, as predicted under climate change, could increase the opportunity for coexistence in this community.  相似文献

We present evidence for coexistence of three differentDrosophila species by rescheduling their life history traits in a natural population using the same resource, at the same time and same place.D. ananassae has faster larval development time (DT) and faster DT(egg-fly) than other two species thus utilizing the resources at maximum at both larval and adult stages respectively. Therefore,D. ananassae skips the interspecific competition at preadult stage but suffers more from intraspecific competition. However,D. melanogaster andD. biarmipes have rescheduled their various life history traits to avoid interspecific competition. Differences of ranks tests for various life history traits suggest that except for DT(egg-pupa), the difference of ranks is highest for the combination ofD. melanogaster andD. ananassae for all other life history traits. This difference is maintained by tradeoffs between larval development time and pupal period and between pupal period and DT(egg-pupa) inD. ananassae.  相似文献

Genetic correlations can affect the course of phenotypic evolution. Although genetic correlations among traits are a common feature of quantitative genetic analyses, they have played a very minor role in recent linkage-map based analyses of the genetic architecture of quantitative traits. Here, we use our work on host-associated races in pea aphids to illustrate how quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping can be used to test specific hypotheses about how genetic correlations may facilitate ecological specialization and speciation.  相似文献

1. Life-history decisions are strongly affected by environmental conditions. In birds, incubation is energetically expensive and affected significantly by ambient temperature. We reduced energetic constraints for female tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) by experimentally heating nests during incubation by an average of 6.9 degrees C to test for changes in incubation behaviour. 2. Females in heated boxes (hereafter 'heated females') increased time spent incubating and maintained higher on-bout and off-bout egg temperatures. This indicates that female energetic constraints, not maximizing developmental conditions of offspring, determine incubation investment. Furthermore, this result suggests that embryonic developmental conditions in unmanipulated nests are suboptimal. 3. We found individual variation in how females responded to experimental heating. Early-laying (i.e. higher phenotypic quality) females with heated nests increased egg temperatures and maintained incubation constancy, while later-laying (lower quality) heated females increased incubation constancy. Changes in egg temperature were due to changes in female behaviour and not due directly to increases in internal nest-box temperatures. 4. Behaviour during the incubation period affected hatching asynchrony. Decreased variation in egg temperature led to lower levels of hatching asynchrony, which was also generally lower in heated nests. 5. Our study finds strong support for the prediction that intermittent incubators set their incubation investment at levels dictated by energetic constraints. Furthermore, females incubating in heated boxes allocated conserved energy primarily to increased egg temperature and increased incubation attentiveness. These results indicate that studies investigating the role of energetics in driving reproductive investment in intermittent incubators should consider egg temperature and individual variation more explicitly.  相似文献

基于统计数据及MODIS产品,计算西藏草地2000与2010年载畜支持服务、肉类供给服务、水源涵养服务和碳吸收服务的功能量。构建Pearson相关系数、总生态系统服务(TES)、供给-调节服务互竞指数(TO),分析了4项生态系统服务相互作用关系随纬度、海拔及时间变化的规律。结果表明:西藏草地两项供给服务和两项调节服务之间分别为相互协同作用,且随时空变化不大。供给服务和调节服务之间的相互作用随海拔和纬度升高时,基本由相互竞争转变为相互协同,在高纬度时则无相互作用。4项服务在低纬度及低海拔呈相互竞争关系时,其生态系统服务总体水平也较低,中纬度及中高海拔呈协同关系时,其总体水平较高。从2000年到2010年,西藏草地4项生态系统服务皆发生较大变化。在变化中,12%的草地供给服务与调节服务发生相互竞争作用,33%的草地则为相互协同关系。发生相互竞争作用的草地主要集中在中低纬度的一江两河地区,而相互协同的区域主要为藏北羌塘高原中南部。  相似文献
