We examined two image‐based methods, photogrammetry and stereo vision, used for reconstructing the three‐dimensional form of biological organisms under field conditions. We also developed and tested a third ‘hybrid’ method, which combines the other two techniques. We tested these three methodologies using two different cameras to obtain digital images of museum and field sampled specimens of giant tortoises. Both the precision and repeatability of the methods were assessed statistically on the same specimens by comparing geodesic and Euclidean measurements made on the digital models with linear measurements obtained with caliper and flexible tape. We found no substantial difference between the three methods in measuring the Euclidean distance between landmarks, but spatially denser models (stereo vision and ‘hybrid’) were more accurate for geodesic distances. The use of different digital cameras did not influence the results. Image‐based methods require only inexpensive instruments and appropriate software, and allow reconstruction of the three‐dimensional forms (including their curved surfaces) of organisms sampled in the field. © 2008 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2008, 95 , 425–436.  相似文献

Invertebrates form an important part of the diet in the omnivorous African tortoises of the genus Kinixys. Millipede prey of Kinixys spekii in Zimbabwe had a mean volume of 0.9 ml, and made up 64.7% of invertebrate food by volume; beetles made up most of the remainder and had a mean volume of 1.4 ml. The mean mass of invertebrate prey was 0.19% of tortoise mass, a similar value of relative prey mass to many insectivorous lizards. Tortoises preferentially attacked moving millipedes at or just behind the head, but predatory behaviour was otherwise unspecialized, with tortoises killing millipedes by ingesting them in pieces. Handling times of millipede prey varied significantly with relative prey mass, defensive behaviour, and direction of ingestion. The profitability (mass intake/handling time) of millipedes was maximal at a relative prey mass of 0.2%; the basis on which prey are selected is discussed.  相似文献

The Middle Asian tortoise Testudo horsfieldii is one of the most radioresistant animals, with Lethal Dose (LD) 50/30 around 500 Gy. Extracts were prepared from different organs of the tortoise, and their biological activity was evaluated. Crude extract from the spleen was found to significantly increase survival of mice treated with lethal doses of radiation. In an iterative process, the active extract was purified by chromatography, and the fractions were screened for biological activity. Various vital parameters were monitored: peripheral blood leukocytes, spleen colonies, mitosis in the bone marrow, and survival after 30 days. The process concluded with the isolation, characterization, and synthesis of the tetrapeptide FTGN, which accelerated repopulation of the irradiated bone marrow at very low concentrations both in vivo and ex vivo. A fluorescently labeled derivative of the peptide was found to selectively associate to CD34+ stem cells, suggesting that the peptide mediates their proliferation and allows fast repopulation of hematopoietic lineages. Interestingly, the peptide protected animals from alopecia. The studies in experimental animals suggest that treatment with FTGN can potentially benefit patients who suffer bone marrow damage due to radiotherapy or chemotherapy and patients undergoing autologous or allogenic bone marrow transplantation.  相似文献

The radiated tortoise (Geochelone radiata) is an endangered species endemic to Madagascar. It inhabits the semiarid spiny forest of the southern part of the island, an ecosystem heavily affected by habitat destruction. Furthermore, illegal harvesting greatly threatens this species. The main objective of our study was to acquire better knowledge of its genetic structure, in order to take appropriate management decisions concerning, for instance, the reintroduction of confiscated individuals. Our hypothesis was that rivers represent effective barriers to tortoise dispersal despite the fact that they are dry most of the year. We used 13 polymorphic microsatellite markers to compare samples from six populations across the range of the species. All analyses (Fisher’s exact tests, F ST values, AMOVA) indicated that the radiated tortoise exhibits moderate levels of genetic structure throughout its range. In addition, we used a multiple regression approach that revealed the importance of rivers to explain the observed structure. This analysis supported the role of the Menarandra and Manambovo Rivers as major barriers to the dispersal of most radiated tortoises, but Markov chain Monte Carlo simulations revealed that low levels of recurrent gene flow may explain why F ST values were not higher. We identified three distinct conservation units with relatively high assignments rates (87%), which should be valuable for the management of the species. This is the first study to report the genetic structure of a species sampled throughout the Malagasy spiny forest.  相似文献

We translocated 120 Agassiz's desert tortoises to 5 sites in Nevada and Utah to evaluate the effects of translocation on tortoise survivorship, reproduction, and habitat use. Translocation sites included several elevations, and extended to sites with vegetation assemblages not typically associated with desert tortoises in order to explore the possibility of moving animals to upper elevation areas. We measured survivorship, reproduction, and movements of translocated and resident animals at each site. Survivorship was not significantly different between translocated and resident animals within and among sites, and survivorship was greater overall during non-drought years. The number of eggs produced by tortoises was similar for translocated and resident females, but differed among sites. Animals translocated to atypical habitat generally moved until they reached vegetation communities more typical of desert tortoise habitat. Even within typical tortoise habitat, tortoises tended to move greater distances in the first year after translocation than did residents, but their movements in the second or third year after translocation were indistinguishable from those of resident tortoises. Our data show that tortoises translocated into typical Mojave desert scrub habitats perform well; however, the large first-year movements of translocated tortoises have important management implications. Projects that employ translocations must consider how much area will be needed to contain translocated tortoises and whether roads need fencing to prevent the loss of animals. © 2012 The Wildlife Society.  相似文献

Abstract: Effective conservation requires strategies to monitor populations efficiently, which can be especially difficult for rare or elusive species where field surveys require high effort and considerable cost. Populations of many reptiles, including Sonoran desert tortoises (Gopherus agassizii), are challenging to monitor effectively because they are cryptic, they occur at low densities, and their activity is limited both seasonally and daily. We compared efficiency and statistical power of 2 survey methods appropriate for tortoises and other rare vertebrates, line-transect distance sampling and site occupancy. In 2005 and 2006 combined, we surveyed 120 1-km transects to estimate density and 40 3-ha plots 5 times each to estimate occupancy of Sonoran desert tortoises in 2 mountain ranges in southern Arizona, USA. For both mountain ranges combined, we estimated density to be 0.30 adult tortoises/ha (95% CI = 0.17–0.43) and occupancy to be 0.72 (95% CI = 0.56–0.89). For the sampling designs we evaluated, monitoring efforts based on occupancy were 8–36% more efficient than those based on density, when contrasting only survey effort, and 17–30% more efficient when contrasting total effort (surveying, hiking to and from survey locations, and radiotracking). Occupancy had greater statistical power to detect annual declines in the proportion of area occupied than did distance sampling to detect annual declines in density. For example, we estimated that power to detect a 5% annual decline with 10 years of annual sampling was 0.92 (95% CI = 0.75–0.98) for occupancy and 0.43 (95% CI = 0.35–0.52) for distance sampling. Although all sampling methods have limitations, occupancy estimation offers a promising alternative for monitoring populations of rare vertebrates, including tortoises in the Sonoran Desert.  相似文献

  • 1 Tortoise beetle larvae possess a shield composed of exuviae and faeces which functions as an effective defence against some invertebrate predators.
  • 2 In the laboratory, Charidotella bicolor, Deloyala guttata and Chelymorpha cassidea larvae with their shields experimentally removed did not exhibit enhanced performance (i.e. decreased development time, increased body mass, or higher survival) compared to control larvae with shields intact.
  • 3 Disturbance caused during shield removal did not adversely affect larvae because performance did not differ among controls (undisturbed larvae with intact shields), disturbance controls (shield removal simulated, but shield left in place), and larvae with shields removed.
  • 4 Larvae without shields did not exhibit compensatory feeding to reconstruct the shield following its removal.
  • 5 In a field experiment in which predators were excluded, larvae with shields removed did not develop faster than controls; in fact, survival was slightly reduced (10%) for larvae without shields and may have resulted from desiccation.
  • 6 For slow-moving tortoise beetle larvae, the cost of bearing the shield is minimal. Thus, larval shields, composed of recycled waste products, provide an inexpensive mode of protection from some natural enemies.
