The potato tuber moth (PTM),Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae), is a major pest of processing tomatoes,Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. (Solanaceae), in Israel. The larvae penetrate the tomato fruit through the stem end and present a serious threat to
crop quality. Foliage and fruit samples were taken in nine commercial tomato fields located in Israel's three main tomato
growing areas, two of which are potato growing areas as well. PTM was not found where potatoes were absent. Potato harvest
in nearby fields was found to be the most significant factor affecting seasonal trends in PTM population density in tomatoes.
All four larval instars were found in foliage on all sampling dates. Significantly higher proportions of first instars were
found during the population density increase which followed potato harvest. Damaged fruits did not contain first instar larvae,
indicating that PTM never undergoes complete development within tomato fruit. Fruit damage levels at harvest were positively
correlated to the peak mean population densities on foliage and the date they were observed. In tomato fields not adjacent
to potatoes, infestation was first observed at the edge of the field. Both before and after the potato harvest in nearby fields,
population density at the edge of the field was significantly higher than at the center. In tomato fields adjacent to potatoes,
no significant differences were found between population densities at the edge and center before the potatoes were harvested.
After the potato harvest, population density at the center of tomato fields was higher than at the edge.

A cDNA clone (TAB2) encoding a nucleoside diphosphate (NDP) kinase has been isolated from a tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Ailsa Craig) cDNA library. The clone is 590 bp long and exhibits a high degree of sequence identity with spinach NDP kinases I and II, Pisum sativum NDP kinase I, Arabidopsis thaliana NDP kinase, Drosophila melanogaster NDP kinase, Dictyostelium discoideum NDP kinase and human Nm 23-H1 and Nm23-H2. Northern analysis has revealed that the mRNA encoded by TAB2 is up-regulated in both leaf and stem tissue in response to wounding. The increase is apparent within 1 h of wounding and is not further elevated by application of ethylene. Southern blot analysis indicates that TAB2 is a member of a small gene family. 相似文献

The nucleotide sequence and derived amino acid sequence were determined for a full-length version of the tomato cDNA clone, pTOM75, the mRNA for which has previously been shown to accumulate in roots, ripening fruit and senescing leaves. Computer analysis of the predicted protein product, which we have named tomato ripening-associated membrane protein (TRAMP) indicates strong homology to known transmembrane channel proteins from other organisms. The magnitude of sodium and potassium fluxes in Lycopersicon escutentum cuhivars Ace and Edkawi (Edkawi is considered more sait-tolerant I was evaluated in planls grown for 10 days in aerated Hoagland solution with the addition of 25 or 100 mM NaCl. Ion accumulatiun in different plant pans, ion concentration in xylem exudate. transpiration and membrane leakiness were measured. Both cultivars responded very similarly to these levels of salinity in terms of growth. No conspicuous differences in membrane leakiness were observed. Net uprake rates were calculated from ion contents data. Potassium uptake rates were lower in salinized planls than in controls, especially in cv. Aee. Potassium/sodium selectivity ratios were much higher in Edkawi than in Ace. and higher in shoot uptake rates than in xy lem exudate. This indicates that Edakw i has a higher capacity to retain potassium under salinity, a character which could contribute to its salt-tolerance. 相似文献

Given the close relationship between a plant's growth rate and its pattern of biomass allocation and the effects of abscisic acid (ABA) on biomass allocation, we studied the influence of ABA on biomass allocation and growth rate of wildtype tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Moneymaker) plants and their strongly ABA-deficient mutant sitiens. The relative growth rate of sitiens was 22% lower than that of the wildtype, as the result of a decreased specific leaf area. The net assimilation rate and the leaf weight ratio were not affected. The mutant showed a much higher transpiration rate and lower hydraulic conductance of the roots. These two factors resulted in sitiens having a significantly lower leaf water potential and turgor. resulting in reduced leaf expansion and, consequently, a lower specific leaf area relative to the wildtype. Addition of ABA to the sitiens roots resulted in phenotypic reversion to the wildtype. We conclude that the influence of ABA-deficiency on biomass allocation and relative growth rate is the result of altered water relations in the plants, rather than of a direct effect on sink strength of different plant organs. 相似文献

Use of lysophosphatidylethanolamine, a natural lipid, to retard tomato leaf and fruit senescence 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
We studied the influence of lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LPE) on the pattern and rate of ethylene production and respiration of tomato ( Lycopersicon esculentum cv. H7155) leaflets and fruit. Leaflets that had been senescing on the plant showed a climacteric-like rise in ethylene production but not in respiration rate which decreased continuously with leaf age. Detached leaflets had a climacteric-like pattern in respiration whether they were incubated in complete darkness or in light. Detached leaflets incubated in the dark had higher rates of ethylene production and CO2 evolution than did light-incubated leaves. There was no change in the pattern of ethylene production or CO2 evolution as a result of LPE treatment. However, LPE-treated attached and detached leaflets had consistently lower rates of CO2 evolution. The reduction in CO2 evolution by LPE was most pronounced at the climacteric-like peak of the detached leaves. LPE-treated leaflets had a higher chlorophyll content and fresh weight and lower electrolyte leakage than the control. LPE-treated fruits had lower rates of ethylene and CO2 production than did the control. LPE-treated fruits also had higher pericarp firmness and lower electrolyte leakage than the control. The results of the present study provide evidence that LPE is able to retard senescence of attached leaves and detached leaves and tomato fruits. The carbon dioxide and ethylene concentrations in tomato fruit ( Lycopersicon esculentum cv. Castelmart) and their stage of ripeness (characteristic external color changes) were periodically measured in fruit attached to and detached from the plant. An external collection apparatus was attached to the surface of individual tomato fruit to permit non-destructive sampling of internal gases. The concentration of carbon dioxide and ethylene in the collection apparatus reached 95% of the concentration in the fruit after 8 h. Gas samples were collected every 24 h. A characteristic climacteric surge in carbon dioxide (2-fold) and ethylene (10-fold) concentration occurred coincident with ripening of detached tomato fruit. Fruit attached to the plant exhibited a climacteric rise in ethylene (20-fold) concentration during ripening, but only a linear increase in carbon dioxide concentration. The carbon dioxide concentration increases in attached fruit during ripening, but the increase is a continuation of the linear increase seen in both attached and detached fruit before ripening and does not exhibit the characteristic pattern normally associated with ripening climacteric fruit. In tomato fruit, it appears that a respiratory climacteric per se, which has been considered intrinsic to the ripening of certain fruit, may not be necessary for the ripening of "climacteric" fruit at all, but instead may be an artifact of using harvested fruit. 相似文献

We examined the effect of soil NH4+ and NO3? content upon the root systems of field-grown tomatoes, and the influence of constant, low concentrations of NH4+ or NO3? upon root growth in solution culture. In two field experiments, few roots were present in soil zones with low extractable NH4+ or NO3?; they increased to a maximum in zones having 2μg-N NO3? g?1 soil and 6 μg-N NO3= g?1 soil, but decreased in zones having higher NH4+ or NO3? levels. Root branching was relatively insensitive to available mineral nitrogen. Plants maintained in solution culture at constant levels of NH4+ or NO3?, had similar shoot biomass, but all root parameters – biomass, length, branching and area – were greater under NH4 nutrition than under NO3?. These results suggest that the size of root system depends on a functional equilibrium between roots and shoots (Brouwer 1967) and on the balance between soil NH4+ and NO3?. 相似文献
