Madeira is home to two species of speckled wood butterfly. Pararge xiphia is endemic and is common at mid to high altitudes, within and around the edges of the indigenous laurel forest. In 1976 P. aegeria colonized the island and anecdotal reports suggest that it may have been responsible for the loss of P. xiphia from some of its former haunts. The aims of this paper were (1) to provide comprehensive data on the distribution, habitat preferences and recent changes of range of the two species and (2) to examine territorial behaviour to see if inter-specific competition is taking place. Census results show that there are basic differences between the species in altitudinal range and habitat, but they are found together at high densities at habitat boundaries. Repetition of some of the census routes after a 4-year gap suggests that P. aegeria is expanding its range into the areas dominated by P. xiphia. Behavioural data demonstrate that the males may be competing by causing each other to expend more energy in defence of territories. Although competition may be present, it is not yet possible to establish which species is more affected and how competition may have contributed to the recent changes in the species' ranges. 相似文献

Avoidance thresholds and 96-h LC50 values were determined for golden shiners, Noiemigonus crysoleucas , for five individual elements: chromium, Cr; copper, Cu; cadmium, Cd; arsenic, As; selenium, Se. The avoidance concentrations were 73, 26 and 28 μgl-1 for Cr-VI, Cu and As-III, respectively. Cadmium and Se were not avoided at experimental concentrations up to 68 and 3489 μg1-1 , respectively. Acute flow-through 96-h LC50 values were Cr-VI 55·0, Cu 84·6, and As-III 12·5 mg 1-1 , which were more than two orders of magnitude above avoidance concentrations. The acute flow-through 96-h LC50 values for Cd and Se were 2·8 and 11·2 mg 1-1 , respectively. These concentrations are 31 and 2·2 times the highest concentration employed in the avoidance tests, neither of which were avoided by the test organisms. Thus, simple toxicity tests do not identify the environmental hazard of some elements, and the most toxic elements may not elicit a behavioural response. When used in concert with tests of organism function, more realistic indicators of environmental hazard or safety may be determined. 相似文献

Reproduction, studied by oviposition and larval survival, was negatively affected by the thrips‐resistant (TR) phenotype, whereas the offspring's developmental rate did not differ on TR and the thrips‐susceptible (TS) phenotype. While thrips’ behaviour was hardly affected by thrips resistance, a significant preference for TS plants over the TR plants was found in different tests. When released on either a TR or a TS plant, thrips dispersed at significantly higher rates from the TR plants, demonstrating that not only an impeded reproduction, but also a reduced residence time adds to the reported lower thrips numbers on TR plants. 相似文献

We examined the feeding habits of black‐backed jackals at Mokolodi Nature Reserve, Botswana, by analysing 237 scats collected between November 1995 and February 1997. Jackal dietary habits reflected the availability of a wide variety of food items and the differential vulnerability of prey. Potential animal and plant food available to jackals varies throughout the year because of its seasonal character. Seasonality of prey occurrence in scats was pronounced for small mammals, miscellaneous fruits and invertebrates. Across all seasons, mammals were the most common food resource (32.4%, n = 168), followed by anthropogenic items (14.8%), fruits (12.9%), invertebrates (10.8%), birds (8.5%), unidentified items (3.5%) and reptiles (1.4%). The presence of domestic mammals and poultry remains in scats reveals their importance in the diet of jackals and the tendency of jackals to frequent human settlements in search of food. Some ecological implications of jackal dietary habits are also explored. 相似文献

Different species of African dung beetles emerge from the soil at characteristic times of the day to fly and colonize the freshly-deposited dung of mammalian herbivores. Onitine dung beetles in their natural habitat displayed one of five distinctive daily flight behaviours: dusk crepuscular (Onitis alexis Klug, O. caffer Boheman, O. fulgidus Klug, O. tortuosus Houston, O. vanderkelleni Lansberge, O. westermanni Lansberge); dusk/dawn crepuscular (O. pecuarius Lansberge and O. viridulus Boheman); dusk/dawn crepuscular and nocturnal (O. aygulus (Fabricius), O. mendax Gillet, O. uncinatus Klug); late afternoon-dusk and dawn-early morning [Heteronitis castelnaui (Harold)]; or diurnal flight activity [O. belial (Fabricius), O. ion (Olivier)]. These diagnostic daily flight behaviours span a light intensity range of over 6 orders of magnitude and have been retained in selected species introduced into Australia. Ambient light intensity appears to be the primary determinant of the daily flight period in onitine dung beetles. Because the dung of mobile herbivores is rapidly exploited by onitine species for feeding and breeding purposes, different flight behaviours result in a spatial and temporal partitioning of species in the local dung beetle community. The timing of flight may contribute to, or lead to avoidance of, competition between species which may ultimately affect colonization success. Many onitines show a strong preference for dung of specific herbivores, which may further reduce interspecific competition. All crepuscular-nocturnal species examined raised their thoracic temperatures endothermically to between 35°C and 40°C before the onset of flight. In O. aygulus the thoracic temperature excess was as large as 19.3°C. The thermal threshold below which the frequency of flight onsets drops off rapidly is about 12°C for O. aygulus and 17°C for O. alexis and O. pecuarius. Radiant loss of body heat during cool nights and dawns may explain why smaller species (<0.4 g body weight), in particular, are adapted behaviourally so that they fly only during the day or early dusk. 相似文献

Abstract. The orientation of adults of the myiasis species Wohlfahrtia magnified and Lucilia sericata to artificial visual stimuli (cloth targets) and olfactory stimuli ('swormlure-4', a potent screwworm attractant), was studied in sheep pastures near to Sarbogard in Hungary. Experiments with odour-baited cloth targets, enclosed in electrocuting grids, demonstrated that colour was an important factor influencing catches on targets: a black target caught most flies of both species, with other colours in the following order of effectiveness, blue > white > yellow. Wohlfahrtia magnified did not respond to swormlure-4 in the strong manner that L. sericata did. The sex ratios of W. magnifica caught on targets (67.2% males) and hand-netted from fence posts (68.8% males) were similar and biased towards males, whereas that of L. sericata on targets was strongly biased towards females (15.6% males), indicating a fundamental difference in the response of these two myiasis species towards the swormlure-baited targets. The orientation of these two species towards hosts was also recorded together with that of a third species, Phormia regina . Electric nets placed beside infested sheep caught significantly more flies of all three species than those placed beside uninfested sheep or in the absence of sheep. The sex ratio of W. magnified caught around infested sheep was the reverse of that on targets, with 68.5% females. Wohlfahrtia magnifica responded more strongly to healthy, uninfested sheep than did L. sericata and P. regina . The potential for use of targets both for population monitoring and control is discussed. 相似文献

Individuals from a natural population of approximately 20 000 fathead minnows from a pike–free pond did not respond with appropriate anti–predator behaviour upon encountering pike odour in laboratory tests. However, 14 days after 10 pike were stocked into the pond, minnows had acquired recognition of pike odour. Laboratory studies have indicated several possible mechanisms for acquiring predator recognition in fathead minnows. This study indicates that these, or similar processes, can produce major changes in predator recognition in the wild. 相似文献

The behaviour ofSitobion avenae (F.), was compared on resistant wheat lines ofTriticum monococcum (L.) and a susceptible variety ofTriticum aestivum (L.). Firstly, stylet penetration activities were monitored with the Electrical Penetration Graph (EPG) technique and subsequently
analysed using flow charts combined with correspondence analysis. Plant resistance was shown to be associated with repeated
penetrations without access to either the xylem or the phloem, and with numerous failures in starting a sustained sap ingestion
(as represented by pattern E2). Access to sieve elements of the phloem did not seem to be much affected on resistant plants
but it took the aphid three times as long to produce a sap ingestion pattern when maintained on the resistant lineT. monococcum no 44 (Tm44) as compared with aphids maintained on susceptible plants. As a result the total time spent in ingesting from sieve
elements was reduced by 72% on Tm44. Secondly, direct observations of freely-moving apterous adults were performed. Aphids
did not discriminate between resistant and susceptible wheat during the first 30 min of access to test leaves, but only 4
out of 25 aphids were still probing after eight hours on resistant Tm44.
The relevance of these results to possible location of the resistance factor(s) are discussed. Although detection of plant
resistance before sieve elements are reached can not be rigorously excluded, the factors involved inT. monococcum resistance toS. avenae undoubtedly occur within the phloem vessels. 相似文献

We examined host evaluation behaviour in three species of aphid parasitoids, Ephedrus californicus Baker, Monoctonus paulensis (Ashmead), and Praon pequodorum Viereck (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae). Mated females were provided with pairwise choices among three kinds of hosts in the laboratory: (green) pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris), and a green and a pink colour morph of alfalfa aphid, Macrosiphum creelii Davis. Patterns of attack and host acceptance were species-specific. Females of E. californicus did not respond to the presence of aphids prior to making antennal contact. Variations in rates of parasitization (pea aphid>green alfalfa aphid>pink alfalfa aphid) were consistent with differences in aphid defensive behaviours; no ‘preference’ for any host type was evident when aphids were anaesthetized with carbon dioxide. In M. paulensis, the order of preference (pea aphid>green alfalfa aphid>pink alfalfa aphid) did not vary when aphids were immobilized, or presented in the dark, or both. Host movement did not influence the rate of attack by M. paulensis. In contrast, the ranked order of preference in P. pequodorum varied with circumstance. In the light, females attacked pea aphid and green alfalfa aphid with equal frequency, but parasitized significantly more of the former; both kinds of aphids were attacked and parasitized at higher rates than pink alfalfa aphid. In the dark, P. pequodorum females parasitized green and pink alfalfa aphids equally and at higher rates than pea aphids. Whereas E. californicus was more successful ovipositing in immobilized hosts, P. pequodorum females attacked and laid more eggs in normal than anaesthetized aphids. Littorina brevicula Philippi is one of the most common snails found in the upper intertidal zone of Japan. In Amakusa, some of the population
of L. brevicula migrate to the lower zone in the winter, while the rest stay in the upper zone. Thus, during the winter, which is its reproductive
season, the population of L. brevicula divides into two sub-populations. This leads to a hypothesis that the migration pattern in winter is genetically controlled
and this behavioural dimorphism is maintained by reproductive isolation between the two sub-populations. In order to test
this hypothesis, the following three points were investigated: (1) whether the same snails migrate in a similar way every
winter, (2) whether there is a significant tidal level preference in snails, and (3) whether reproductive isolation occurs
between the two sub-populations. The results showed (1) the migration behaviour of each snail was consistent over two successive
winters, i.e. the same group of snails migrated downward every winter and the same group of snails stayed in the upper zone
every winter, (2) transplanted snails moved toward the original zones where they were caught, suggesting that the snails actively
selected their tidal zone in winter, and (3) most of the snails copulated within each sub-population. Therefore, reproductive
isolation between the two sub-populations was considered to be established to some extent by the dimorphic migration behaviour.
In conclusion, the migratory behaviour of L. brevicula is determined separately for each individual and might be genetically controlled, and the behavioural dimorphism may be maintained
by partial reproductive isolation between the two sub-populations. 相似文献
