In the context of delta restoration and its impact on salmonid rearing, success is best evaluated based on whether out‐migrating juvenile salmon can access and benefit from suitable estuarine habitat. Here, we integrated 3 years of post‐restoration monitoring data including habitat availability, invertebrate prey biomass, and juvenile Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) physiological condition to determine whether individuals profited from the addition of 364 ha of delta habitat in South Puget Sound, Washington, United States. Productivity in the restored mudflat was comparable to reference sites 3 years after dike removal, surpassing a mean total of 6 million kJ energy from invertebrate prey. This resulted from the development of a complex network of tidal channels and a resurgence in dipteran biomass that was unique to the restoration area. Consequently, a notable shift in invertebrate consumption occurred between 2010 and 2011, whereby individuals switched from eating primarily amphipods to dipteran flies; however, dietary similarity to the surrounding habitat did not change from year to year, suggesting that this shift was a result of a change in the surrounding prey communities. Growth rates did not differ between restored and reference sites, but catch weight was positively correlated with prey biomass, where greater prey productivity appeared to offset potential density‐dependent effects. These results demonstrate how the realized function of restoring estuarine habitat is functionally dependent. High prey productivity in areas with greater connectivity may support healthy juvenile salmon that are more likely to reach the critical size class for offshore survival.  相似文献

Manipulating freezing tolerance in transgenic plants   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Winterhardiness is a composite of tolerances to freezing, desiccation, ice-encasement, flooding and diseases. From one point of view, winterhardiness may not be easily manipulated by genetic engineering technology because many different genes are involved in the tolerance of these diverse stresses. However, these various stresses have similarities. They promote formation of activated forms of oxygen, promote membrane lipid and protein degradation, cause similar biophysical changes in membrane structure, and culminate with increased leakage of cytoplasmic solutes and loss of cellular membrane functions. These similarities led to the hypothesis that winter injury might be reduced in crop plants if their tolerance of oxidative stress was increased. Towards that objective we created transgenic alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) plants that overexpress either Mn-SOD or Fe-SOD cDNA (provided by Dirk Inzé, Universiteit Gent). Petiole explants were transformed using Agrobacterium tumefaciens and plants were regenerated by somatic embryogenesis. The primary transgenic plants were screened using PCR (polymerase chain reaction), Southern hybridization and native PAGE for SOD activity. Greenhouse and laboratory studies showed a minimal difference in stress tolerance between the primary transgenic and non-transgenic plants. In the first field trial, four primary transgenic plants expressing two forms of the Mn-SOD cDNA had greater survival after two winters than the non-transgenic RA3. Similar results were obtained in a second field trial, comparing 18 independent transformants with Mn-SOD targeted to the mitochondria, 11 independent transformants with Mn-SOD targeted to the chloroplast and 39 independent transformants with Fe-SOD targeted to the chloroplast, expressed in three different non-transgenic plants. The transgenic plants averaged over 25% higher survival than the non-transgenic controls after one winter. There was no effect of subcellular targeting or SOD type on field survival, but there was variation among independent transformants containing the same SOD construct. Activated oxygen therefore appears to be one of the possible causes of winter injury, and it should be possible to reduce winter injury in transgenic plants by constitutive overexpression of SOD.  相似文献

Why don't the gas spaces of submerged organs of wetland plants flood extensively when damaged? In addressing this intriguing question, Soukup et al . (pp. 71–75 in this issue) report on the role of rhizome diaphragms as barriers to flooding in Phragmites australis . This should prompt some reappraisal of the ways in which flooding resistance can be realized, even perhaps in undamaged organs.
Most emergent wetland macrophytes have an abundance of interconnected internal gas space, much of it in the form of large voids transversely partitioned at intervals by perforated cellular plates termed diaphragms. Functionally, it provides a low-resistance pathway for internal oxygen transport to support the respiratory needs of submerged and buried organs (Armstrong, 1979; Armstrong et al ., 1988; Crawford, 1992) and facilitates carbon dioxide removal. However, it does more than this, since it enables oxygen to be released from the root to where it can support aerobic microbial activity in otherwise anaerobic sediments, and phytotoxin immobilization or destruction (Armstrong et al ., 1992; Begg et al ., 1994; Gilbert & Frenzel, 1998). This oxygen release is regarded by some as a valuable aid to effluent purification by constructed wetlands. Perhaps a less desirable property of this gas-space provision is its recently discovered role in enhancing the emissions of greenhouse gases such as methane from wetlands (Brix et al ., 1992; Chanton & Whiting, 1996; Crutzen, 1991; Dacey & Klug, 1979).  相似文献

A dramatic change in population abundance of Salvelinus leucomaenis following a catastrophic flood event was investigated. Population density declined by c . 98% after the flood in a river section affected by debris flow. Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus aggregate to feed from May to October in Minas Basin (45° N; 64° W), a large, cul‐de‐sac embayment of the inner Bay of Fundy. The aggregation consists mainly of migrants from the Saint John, NB and Kennebec Rivers, ME (99%). During 2004–2015, 4393 A. oxyrinchus were taken as by‐catch by commercial fish trawlers or at intertidal fishing weirs, and 1453 were marked and/or sampled and released. Fork length (LF) ranged from 458 to 2670 mm, but 72·5% were <1500 mm. Mass (M) ranged from 0·5 to 58·0 kg. The mass‐length relationship for fish ≤50 kg was log10M = 3·32log10LF ? 5·71. Observed growth of unsexed A. oxyrinchus recaptured after 1–8 years indicated fish of 90–179 cm LF grew c. 2–4 cm a year. Ages obtained from pectoral spines were from 4 to 54 years. The Von Bertalanffy growth model predicted K = 0·01 and L = 5209 mm LF. Estimated annual mortality was 9·5–10·9%. Aggregation sizes in 2008 and 2013 were 8804 and 9244 individuals, respectively. Fish exhibited high fidelity for yearly return to Minas Basin and population estimates indicated the total at‐sea number utilizing the Basin increased from c. 10 700 in 2010 to c. 37 500 in 2015. Abundance in the Basin was greatest along the north shore in spring and along the south shore in summer, suggesting clockwise movement following the residual current structure. Marked individuals were recaptured in other bays of the inner Bay of Fundy, north to Gaspé, Quebec, and south to New Jersey, U.S.A., with 26 recoveries from the Saint John River, NB, spawning run. Fish marked at other Canadian and U.S. sites were also recovered in Minas Basin. Since all A. oxyrinchus migrate into and out of the Basin annually they will be at risk of mortality if planned tidal power turbines are installed in Minas Passage.  相似文献

We review the detrimental effects of waterlogging on physiology, growth and yield of wheat. We highlight traits contributing to waterlogging tolerance and genetic diversity in wheat. Death of seminal roots and restriction of adventitious root length due to O2 deficiency result in low root:shoot ratio. Genotypes differ in seminal root anoxia tolerance, but mechanisms remain to be established; ethanol production rates do not explain anoxia tolerance. Root tip survival is short‐term, and thereafter, seminal root re‐growth upon re‐aeration is limited. Genotypes differ in adventitious root numbers and in aerenchyma formation within these roots, resulting in varying waterlogging tolerances. Root extension is restricted by capacity for internal O2 movement to the apex. Sub‐optimal O2 restricts root N uptake and translocation to the shoots, with N deficiency causing reduced shoot growth and grain yield. Although photosynthesis declines, sugars typically accumulate in shoots of waterlogged plants. Mn or Fe toxicity might occur in shoots of wheat on strongly acidic soils, but probably not more widely. Future breeding for waterlogging tolerance should focus on root internal aeration and better N‐use efficiency; exploiting the genetic diversity in wheat for these and other traits should enable improvement of waterlogging tolerance.  相似文献

In order to clarify the induction of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) by anaerobiosis in oat (Avena sativa L.), the seedlings were exposed to anaerobiosis and activity of ADH and ADH isozyme profiles were determined. The anaerobiosis increased ADH activities in shoots and roots of the seedlings. By day 2, the activity increased 5 and 4 times in the roots and the shoots, respectively, compared with those under aerobic condition. Based on nondenaturing electrophoresis, ADH isozyme composition analysis revealed six bands consisting of a dimmer enzyme with submits encoded by three different Adh genes. Changes in staining intensity of the isozymes indicated that the increase in ADH activity in oat under anaerobiosis resulted from increased enzyme synthesis.  相似文献

Changes following culvert removal in the production of the saltmarsh mosquito, Aedes vigilax (Skuse), and the cover and occurrence of halophytes were investigated on Kooragang Island, New South Wales, Australia. Mosquito eggshells were collected from saltmarsh soil and used as an index of mosquito production. Saltmarsh bordering each of four tidal creeks was sampled prior to the removal of culverts from two of these creeks in 1995. All creeks were resampled two years later. In most instances, eggshell densities decreased significantly at saltmarshes affected by culvert removal, with relatively small change at reference saltmarshes. However, oviposition by Ae. vigilax was initiated in upland areas following culvert removal at one site. Sarcocornia quinqueflora cover decreased significantly at sites affected by culvert removal relative to reference sites. The cover of Sporobolus virginicus and frequency of occurrence of Triglochin striata increased significantly at one modified site, while the frequency of occurrence of Avicennia marina seedlings increased significantly at the other modified site. We suggest that culvert removal and other alterations intended to increase tidal flushing will lead to vegetation patterns and mosquito eggshell densities that typically occur in the more frequently inundated saltmarsh–mangrove complex.  相似文献

The annual cycle of physical and chemical variables and plankton dynamics was studied in two shallow ponds (East and West Ponds) of the El Hondo wetland, an ecosystem of international importance. Water conductivity increased up to 31–49 mS cm–1 as water level decreased due to high evaporation and minimal water inputs. Initially considered mesohaline, the waters were reclassified as polyhaline during the hot season. EP was subject to successive desiccation‐flooding cycles, and flooding of the dried sediment caused the release of high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds, which quickly depleted. The algal species composition was typical of eutrophic ecosystems, and the chlorophyll content indicated that EP was eutrophic and WP mesotrophic. Phytoplanktonic species richness and diversity were low in both ponds. Algal assemblages, in terms of biovolume, were mainly dominated by Dinophyceae in EP and by Cryptophyta in WP. The zooplankton community was dominated by Rotifers (Brachionus and Hexarthra), although Copepods and Ciliates were also important. Different water inputs to the ponds, partial drying in EP during the warm season with the subsequent higher increment of salinity, and the presence of dense populations of submerged macrophytes in WP, explain the differences in plankton communities found between the two ponds.  相似文献
