Primates possess the remarkable ability to differentiate faces of group members and to extract relevant information about the individual directly from the face. Recognition of conspecific faces is achieved by means of holistic processing, i.e. the processing of the face as an unparsed, perceptual whole, rather than as the collection of independent features (part-based processing). The most striking example of holistic processing is the Thatcher illusion. Local changes in facial features are hardly noticeable when the whole face is inverted (rotated 180°), but strikingly grotesque when the face is upright. This effect can be explained by a lack of processing capabilities for locally rotated facial features when the face is turned upside down. Recently, a Thatcher illusion was described in the macaque monkey analogous to that known from human investigations. Using a habituation paradigm combined with eye tracking, we address the critical follow-up questions raised in the aforementioned study to show the Thatcher illusion as a function of the observer''s species (humans and macaques), the stimulus'' species (humans and macaques) and the level of perceptual expertise (novice, expert). 相似文献
1. 1.The sensations evoked by pairs of distinct thermal stimuli applied to the back of the hand were studied in 17 volunteer subjects. Four stimulus combinations were used; neutral-cold (NC), neutral-neutral (NN), neutral-warm (NW), and cold-warm (CW).
2. 2.The subjects were first asked to estimate the magnitude of the thermal sensations evoked by the thermal stimuli. On average, the four pairs were reported as increasing magnitude in the following order: NC, CW, NN, and NW, seeming to suggest that the subjects experienced the cold-warm combination as a composite sensation of cold and warmth intermediate between pure cold and pure warmth.
3. 3.When asked only to detect the presence of a cold stimulus, the subjects performed as well for the CW combination as for the CN combination. This second result indicates that the reported composite magnitude of CW does not result from a true opponency of cold and warmth but from a cognitive combination of distinct sensations of cold and warmth.

Summary Tongue-projecting plethodontid salamanders have massive direct ipsilateral retinal afferents to the tectum opticum as well as a large and well developed nucleus isthmi. Retrograde staining revealed two subnuclei: A ventral one projecting to the contralateral tectal hemisphere and a dorsal one projecting back to the ipsilateral side. The isthmic nuclei show a retinotopic organization, which is in register with that of the tectum. Electrophysiological recordings from nucleus-isthmi neurons revealed response properties that are very similar to those found in tectal neurons. Thus, there is no substantial processing of tectal neural activity in the nucleus isthmi. Measurements of peak latencies after electrical and light stimulation suggest the continuous coexistence of 4 representations of the visual field in the tectum mediated by (1) the contralateral and (2) the ipsilateral direct retinal afferents, (3) the uncrossed and (4) the crossed isthmo-tectal projection. (1) and (2) originate at the same moment in the retina and arrive simultaneously in the tectum. It is assumed that in plethodontid salamanders with massive ipsilateral retino-tectal projections depth perception based on disparity cues is achieved by comparison of these images.Representations mediated by (3) and (4) arriving in the tectum at the same time as (1) and (2) originate 10–30 ms earlier in the retina. It is hypothesized that these time differences between (1)/(2) and (3)/(4) are used to calculate three-dimensional trajectories of fast-moving prey objects.Abbreviations

Research on visual blight has been predominantly qualitative and has pointed out salient attributes of blight: that it is durable, visually demeaning, and somehow aesthetically depressing. Data from a national sample (n=3005) are used in this study to measure the effect of demographic variation on the perception of visual blight. The perception of blight shows marked and regular variation with socioeconomic status, marital status, and religiosity.Harris data for this study was purchased with funds from the Shell Foundation. The kinetics of gravitropism and of amyloplast sedimentation were studied in dark-grown protonemata of the moss Ceratodon purpureus (Hedw.) Brid. The protonemata grew straight up at a rate of 20–25 m·h– in nutrient-supplemented agar. After they were oriented to the horizontal, upward curvature was first detected after 1–1.5 h and reached 84° by 24 h. The tip cells exhibited an amyloplast zonation, with a tip cluster of nonsedimenting amyloplasts, an amyloplast-free zone, and a zone with pronounced amyloplast sedimentation. This latter zone appears specialized more for lateral than for axial sedimentation since amyloplasts sediment to the lower wall in horizontal protonemata but do not fall to the basal wall in vertical protonemata. Amyloplast sedimentation started within 15 min of gravistimulation; this is within the 12–17-min presentation time. The data support the hypothesis that some amyloplasts function as statoliths in these cells. This work was supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration grant NAGW-780. Plasma membrane flavins and pterins are considered to mediate important physiological functions such as blue light photoperception and redox activity. Therefore, the presence of flavins and pterins in the plasma membrane of higher plants was studied together with NAD(P)H-dependent redox activities. Plasma membranes were isolated from the apical hooks of etiolated bean seedlings (Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv. Limburgse Vroege) by aqueous two-phase partitioning. Fluorescence spectroscopy revealed the presence of two chromophores. The first showed excitation maxima at 370 and 460 nm and an emission peak at 520 nm and was identified as a flavin. The second chromophore was probably a pterin molecule with excitation peaks at 290 and 350 nm and emission at 440 nm. Both pigments are considered intrinsic to the plasma membrane since they could not be removed by treatment with hypotonic media containing high salt and low detergent concentrations. The flavin concentration was estimated at about 500 pmol mg?1 protein. However difficulties were encountered in quantifying the pterin concentrations. Protease treatments indicated that the flavins were non-covalently bound to the proteins. Separation of the plasma membrane proteins after solubilisation by octylglucoside, on an ion exchange system (HPLC, Mono Q), resulted in a distinct protein fraction showing flavin and pterin fluorescence and NADH oxidoreductase activity. The flavin of this fraction was identified as flavin mononucleotide (FMN) by HPLC analysis. Other minor peaks of NADH:acceptor reductase activity were resolved on the column. The presence of distinct NAD(P)H oxidases at the plasma membrane was supported by nucleotide specificity and latency studies using intact vesicles. Our work demonstrates the presence of plasma membrane flavins as intrinsic chromophores, that may function in NAD(P)H-oxidoreductase activity and suggests the presence of plasma membrane bound pterins. 相似文献
During mate choice, receivers often assess the magnitude (duration, size, etc.) of signals that vary along a continuum and reflect variation in signaller quality. It is generally assumed that receivers assess this variation linearly, meaning each difference in signalling trait between signallers results in a commensurate change in receiver response. However, increasing evidence shows receivers can respond to signals non-linearly, for example through Weber's Law of proportional processing, where discrimination between stimuli is based on proportional, rather than absolute, differences in magnitude. We quantified mate preferences of female green swordtail fish, Xiphophorus hellerii, for pairs of males differing in body size. Preferences for larger males were better predicted by the proportional difference between males (proportional processing) than the absolute difference (linear processing). This demonstration of proportional processing of a visual signal implies that receiver perception may be an important mechanism selecting against the evolution of ever-larger signalling traits. 相似文献
Echolocating bats (Eptesicus fuscus) were trained to discriminate between simulated targets consisting of one or two echo-wavefronts with internal time delays of up to 100 s. Spectral and temporal properties and total signal energy of the targets were evaluated and predictions for performances of bats derived from receiver models were compared with measured performances.

Eptesicus fuscus was able to discriminate a one-wavefront target from two-wavefront targets with distinct internal time delays (12 s, 32–40 s and 52–100 s). Performance was not affected by changes in total signal energy. Bats also successfully discriminated between two-wavefront targets with different internal time delays.
3.
Performance predicted from differences in total energy between targets did not match the measured performance, indicating that bats did not rely on total echo energy. This finding is also supported by the behavioral data. Performance predicted from spectral and temporal receiver models both matched the measured performance and, therefore, neither one of these models can be favored over the other.

The behavioral data suggest that Eptesicus fuscus did not transform echo information into estimates of target range separation and, therefore, did not perceive the two wavefronts of each simulated two-wavefront echo as two separate targets.
