Taxonomy, biology and abundance of icefishes, or noodlefishes (Salangidae), in the Yellow River estuary of the Bohai Sea, China

Four species of icefishes were sampled in the Yellow River estuary of the Bohai Sea from April 1984 to April 1985 and from February 1988 to June 1989. Morphological analysis showed that they belonged to three subfamilies of Salangidae: one species from Protosalangicae, Protosalanx chinensis ; two species from Salanginae, Salanx ariakensis and Salanx prognathus ; and one species, Neosalanx andersoni , from Salangichthyinae, a new subfamily. External morphological characteristics, population composition, growth, maturity, food habits, longevity, fecundity, abundance and distribution of these icefishes are described. Based on these analyses, a clear outline of taxonomy, zoogeography aod biology of icefishes in the Yellow River estuary of the Bohai Sea was established.     

Implications of the variance effective population size on the genetic conservation of monoecious species

The concept of variance effective population size [Ne_(v)] and other expressions are reviewed and described for specific sampling steps in germplasm collection and regeneration of monoecious species. Special attention is given to procedures for computing the variance of the number of contributed gametes [V(k)] to the next generation. Drift, as it occurs between generations, was considered to contain a component due to the sampling of parents and a subsequent component due to the sampling of gametes. This demonstrates that drift, caused by reduction of seed viability, damages the genetic integrity of accessions stored in germplasm banks. The study shows how mating designs, such as plant-to-plant or chain crossings with additional female gametic control, can partially alleviate this problem. Optimal procedures for increasing Ne_(v) when collecting germplasm in the field are also discussed. The effect of different female and male gametic control strategies on Ne_(v) is considered under several situations. Practical examples illustrating the use of V(k) and Ne_(v) expressions are given.     

Scrape cytology in the diagnosis of Paget's disease of the breast

Eczema of the nipple is an important symptom presenting to the general surgeon in the out-patient department. the diagnosis of Paget's disease of the nipple has traditionally been made by incision biopsy necessitating at least a local anaesthetic. We present 14 patients with nipple skin change, in whom the technique of scrape cytology was used to identify patients with Paget's disease. In our series eight cases of Paget's disease were successfully identified by scrape cytology with no false negatives or positives. We suggest that this is a quick, easy, non-invasive method of screening eczema of the nipple in the out-patient clinic.     

Guanine nucleotide regulatory protein alterations in young Milan hypertensive strain rats

Vascular smooth muscle cell membranes from prehypertensive rats of the Milan hypertensive strain (MHS) were used to examine adenylyl cyclase activity and its regulation by guanine nucleotide regulatory proteins (G-proteins). Basal adenylyl cyclase activity was similar in MHS and Milan normontensive strain (MNS) membranes. Forsokolin (10^?4 M) produced a significantly greater stimulatory response in MHS membranes, but this was not observed with NaF (10^?2 M). Isoporterenol (10^?4 M) caused a significantly decreased stimulation of adenylyl cyclase activity in MHS membranes, while prostaglandin E₁ (10^?5 M) produced similar responses in the two strains. G_i function and GTP responses, as observed by biphasic effects of GTP on isoproterenol-stimulated membranes, were similar in both strains. The levels of G_i2α and G_qα/G₁₁α were similar in the two strains, while the levels of G_sα (44 and 42 kDa forms) and the β-subunit were significantly reduced by ～20% in MHS membranes. The α-subunit of G_i3 was dramatically reduced by ～80% in MHS membranes. The affinities of β-adrenergic receptors for the antagonist, cyanophindolol, were similar in the two strains; however, the number of β-adrenoceptors was substantially reduced in MHS membranes. These findings may be of relevance to altered vascular reactivity and transmembrane ion distribution observed in the MHS.

The interaction of the vanadyl(IV) cation with phytic acid

The interactions of VO²⁺ with phytate to form both soluble and insoluble complexes, have been studied by electronic absorption spectroscopy. A soluble 1∶1 VO²⁺: phytate complex is formed at pH <1. At higher pH-values insoluble complexes are produced. Two different solid complexes, obtained respectively at pH=2 and 4, were isolated and characterized. The maximal bonding ratio of VO²⁺: phytate was found to be 4, on the basis of a pH binding profile.     

Talaromyces lagunensis,a new species from Philippine soil

A new species ofTalaromyces (Ascomycetes; Trichocomaceae) with aPenicillium anamorph,T. lagunensis, is described and illustrated. This fungus is characterized by its extremely restricted growh on Czapek-yeast extract agar, light yellow to light orange ascomata with a telaperidium, catenate, pyriform or ellipsoidal asci, ellipsoidal or subglobose ascospores with a microtuberculate wall, short conidiophores with an irregular, mostly monoverticillate to biverticillate penicillus, and subglobose to ovoid conidia. The holotype was isolated from forest soil in the Philippines.     

A deterministic analysis of self-incompatibility alleles

A number of plant species have a self-incompatibility locus that prevents self-fertilization. We 'analyse a deterministic model with an arbitrary number of alleles. We prove that the only polymorphic equilibrium is the one for which all (heterozygous) genotypes are equally frequent, and we prove that all (initially) polymorphic populations converge to this equilibrium.     

食蚜绒螨对棉花苗蚜的控制作用研究

通过2年的田间调查和小区试验发现:(1)食蚜绒螨与被寄生的棉蚜有翅蚜和无翅蚜在时间—数量分布上具相似性。(2)棉蚜带螨率结果说明,50％有翅蚜可被迁入初期杀死,可使大部分棉蚜繁殖力下降或不能生殖;(3)棉田播种前施肥、浅翻,对食蚜绒螨的发生量不具明显影响;(4)食蚜螨在棉田期其他棉蚜天敌缺少的情况下,填补了此期控蚜天敌时间生态位的空缺,成为棉田生态系统中不可缺少的一员。     

Initial soil organic carbon stocks govern changes in soil carbon: Reality or artifact?

Changes in soil organic carbon (SOC) storage have the potential to affect global climate; hence identifying environments with a high capacity to gain or lose SOC is of broad interest. Many cross-site studies have found that SOC-poor soils tend to gain or retain carbon more readily than SOC-rich soils. While this pattern may partly reflect reality, here we argue that it can also be created by a pair of statistical artifacts. First, soils that appear SOC-poor purely due to random variation will tend to yield more moderate SOC estimates upon resampling and hence will appear to accrue or retain more SOC than SOC-rich soils. This phenomenon is an example of regression to the mean. Second, normalized metrics of SOC change—such as relative rates and response ratios—will by definition show larger changes in SOC at lower initial SOC levels, even when the absolute change in SOC does not depend on initial SOC. These two artifacts create an exaggerated impression that initial SOC stocks are a major control on SOC dynamics. To address this problem, we recommend applying statistical corrections to eliminate the effect of regression to the mean, and avoiding normalized metrics when testing relationships between SOC change and initial SOC. Careful consideration of these issues in future cross-site studies will support clearer scientific inference that can better inform environmental management.
