Environmental predictability and remating in European blackbirds   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We studied mate and site fidelity between years in an Englishpopulation of blackbirds (Turdus merula) from 1985 to 1991.Divorce was observed in 32% of 183 cases where mates had survivedfrom the previous breeding season. After divorces, females tendedto nest farther from their original site than males did, butthere was no sex difference in distance moved after the deathof a mate. The mean annual fledgling production of 60 m x 60m breeding sites was statistically repeatable among years, evenafter accounting for possible differences in reproductive performanceamong site-tenacious individuals. Divorce rates were greatestin low-quality sites. We found no annual fitness cost associatedwith mating with an unfamiliar bird. However, breeding in anew site cost on average one fledgling per year.  相似文献

Of three coexisting triggerfishes, in the intertidal and immediate subtidal zones of a coral reef within the Kenting National Park, southern Taiwan, Balistoides viridescens was observed only in the subtidal zone and foraged preferentially by nipping directly at small invertebrates among algal covered substrata. They fed also, although at a lower frequency, by using a water-jet technique to uncover prey on sandy substrata. Territory size ranged from 61·05 to 161·57 m2 but was not related to rates of feeding or defence. Feeding frequency was, however, positively related to the area of algae present in the territory, and inversely related to the frequency of defence. In contrast to B. viridescens, Rhinecanthus verrucosus and R. aculeatus foraged mainly in the intertidal zone when the tide was high. They fed preferentially off rocky substrata and used only nipping (not water-jetting) to secure prey.  相似文献

To understand the contemporary process of desertification in the Mu-Us Sandy Land, China, we assessed the current status of desertification from satellite images. We analyzed the effect of land use by comparing desertification images and GIS-based thematic data. Socioeconomic factors were studied through interviews with local people. The desertified area ratio in each village was related to the sand dune ratio. Desertification in this region was affected by the activity of sand dunes. The revegetated area ratio had a close relationship with the cropland ratio. The development of cropland and surrounding woods contributed to revegetation of desertified land. Desertified areas were distributed mainly in pastoral regions. Critical carrying capacity of grassland for sheep and goats was approximately 2 head/ha. High population density of goats was evident in the severely desertified ranges. Goats were increasingly introduced to earn money through modernization, but they overgrazed fenced pastures. Further environmental education is needed to promote sustainable land use.  相似文献

Problems in species recognition are thought to affect the evolution of secondary sexual characters mainly through avoidance of maladaptive hybridization. Another, but much less studied avenue for the evolution of sexual characters due to species recognition problems is through interspecific aggression. In the damselfly, Calopteryx splendens, males have pigmented wing spots as a sexual character. Large-spotted males resemble males of another species, Calopteryx virgo, causing potential problems in species recognition. In this study, we investigate whether there is character displacement in wing spot size and whether interspecific aggression could cause this pattern. We found first that wing spot size of C. splendens in populations decreased with increasing relative abundance of C. virgo. Secondly, C. virgo males were more aggressive towards large- than small-spotted C. splendens males. Thirdly, in interspecific contests C. virgo males had better territory holding ability than C. splendens males. These results suggest that interspecific aggression may have caused character displacement in wing spot size of C. splendens, because the intensity of aggression towards large-spotted males is likely to increase with relative abundance of C. virgo males. Thus, interspecific aggression may be an evolutionarily significant force that is able to cause divergence in secondary sexual characters.  相似文献

Evolution of male care is still poorly understood. Using phylogenetically matched-pairs comparisons we tested for effects of territoriality and mating system on male care evolution in fish. All origins of male care were found in pair-spawning species (with or without additional males such as sneakers) and none were found in group-spawning species. However, excluding group spawners, male care originated equally often in pair-spawning species with additional males as in strict pair-spawning species. Evolution of male care was also significantly related to territoriality. Yet, most pair-spawning taxa with male care are also territorial, making their relative influence difficult to separate. Furthermore, territoriality also occurs in group-spawning species. Hence, territoriality is not sufficient for male care to evolve. Rather, we argue that it is the combination of territoriality and pair spawning with sequential polygyny that favours the evolution of male care, and we discuss our results in relation to paternity assurance and sexual selection.  相似文献

In many species, male territorial aggression is tightly coupled with gonadal secretion of testosterone (T). In contrast, in song sparrows (Melospiza melodia morphna), males are highly aggressive during the breeding (spring) and nonbreeding (autumn and early winter) seasons, but not during molt (late summer). In aggressive nonbreeding song sparrows, plasma T levels are basal (< or = 0.10 ng/ml), and castration has no effect on aggression. However, aromatase inhibitors reduce nonbreeding aggression, indicating a role for estrogen in wintering males. In the nonbreeding season, the substrate for brain aromatase is unclear, because plasma T and androstenedione levels are basal. Aromatizable androgen may be derived from plasma dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), an androgen precursor. DHEA circulates at elevated levels in wintering males (approximately 0.8 ng/ml) and might be locally converted to T in the brain. Moreover, plasma DHEA is reduced during molt, as is aggression. Here, we experimentally increased DHEA in wild nonbreeding male song sparrows and examined territorial behaviors (e.g., singing) and discrete neural regions controlling the production of song. A physiological dose of DHEA for 15 days increased singing in response to simulated territorial intrusions. In addition, DHEA treatment increased the volume of a telencephalic brain region (the HVc) controlling song, indicating that DHEA can have large-scale neuroanatomical effects in adult animals. The DHEA treatment also caused a slight increase in plasma T. Exogenous DHEA may have been metabolized to sex steroids within the brain to exert these behavioral and neural effects, and it is also possible that peripheral metabolism contributed to these effects. These are the first results to suggest that exogenous DHEA increases male-male aggression and the size of an entire brain region in adults. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that DHEA regulates territorial behavior, especially in the nonbreeding season, when plasma T is basal.  相似文献

Synopsis We examined the abundance of blue tang surgeonfish, Acanthurus coeruleus, in each of three social modes (schooling, territorial, and wandering) in relation to size class, ecological variables, population density and time of day to discern potential determinants of social organization. We found individuals from all three social modes in all four fringing reef habitats (back reef, flat, crest and spur and groove zones) at our main site. Territorial tang density was highest in the flat zone, lowest in the spur and groove zone and negatively related to adult damselfish density. A higher proportion of tangs formed schools in reef zones with the highest densities of territorial damselfishes (spur and groove, crest). In the back reef and flat zones, where damselfish densities were very low, tangs rarely formed schools. Tangs in the wandering mode were most abundant in the back reef. The density of territorial tangs did not change with time of day, but non-territorial tangs tended to wander more in the morning and to form schools more at midday. Small yellow-phase juveniles were always territorial, and the incidence of territoriality decreased in the larger size classes, while schooling and wandering increased. Among similar fringing reefs, the incidence of territoriality increased with increasing population density. These data suggest that life history stage, damselfish density, and conspecific population density are important determinants of blue tang social organization.  相似文献

Aggressive behavior of Pachydiplax longipennis during foraging was quantified by observing focal individuals on arrays of artificial perches. Pachydiplax apparently aggressively defend, for up to several hours at a time, one or a few feeding perches. Seventeen percent of all behaviors included agonistic actions, e.g., chasing or physical contact. The frequency of interactions was correlated positively with ambient temperature, solar radiation, prey density and density of other dragonflies. Both sexes initiated and responded to intra- and interspecific aggression; intraspecific interactions were more intense, however. Males had significantly higher interaction rates and fighting success than females, and intraspecific male–male contests were particularly intense. When prey were visibly localized, contest winners commonly gained perches closer to the prey swarm, and aggressive behavior was apparently correlated with feeding opportunity. Despite the frequency of aggression, these dragonflies allocated only about 19 s, on average, to agonistic behavior during 30-min observation periods. This and other costs appear small compared to foraging benefits of occupying a favorable perch, although at a very high interaction intensity high energy costs and lower intake reduce the net energy gain.  相似文献
