Detecting declines in populations at broad spatial scales takes enormous effort, and long‐term data are often more sparse than is desired for estimating trends, identifying drivers for population changes, framing conservation decisions, or taking management actions. Museum records and historic data can be available at large scales across multiple decades, and are therefore an attractive source of information on the comparative status of populations. However, changes in populations may be real (e.g. in response to environmental covariates) or resulting from variation in our ability to observe the true population response (also possibly related to environmental covariates). This is a (statistical) nuisance in understanding the true status of a population. Evaluating statistical hypotheses alongside more interesting ecological ones is important in the appropriate use of museum data. Two statistical considerations are generally applicable to use of museum records: first without initial random sampling, comparison with contemporary results cannot provide inference to the entire range of a species, and second the availability of only some individuals in a population may respond to environmental changes. Changes in the availability of individuals may reduce the proportion of the population that is present and able to be counted on a given survey event, resulting in an apparent decline even when population size is stable.

This paper aims to collect and analyse existing information on different filter media used for phosphorus (P) removal from wastewater in constructed wetlands. The most commonly used materials are categorized as natural materials (considered in 39 papers), industrial byproducts (25 papers) and man-made products (10 papers). A majority of studies on sorbents have been carried out in lab-scale systems as batch experiments, and only very few studies have highlighted results on full-scale systems. Among the great variety of filter media studied, most of materials had a pH level >7 and high Ca (CaO) content. The highest P-removal capacities were reported for various industrial byproducts (up to 420 g P kg−1 for some furnace slags), followed by natural materials (maximum 40 g P kg−1 for heated opoka) and man-made filter media (maximum 12 g P kg−1 for Filtralite). We found a significant positive Spearman Rank Order Correlation between the P retention and CaO and Ca content of filter materials (R2 = 0.51 and 0.43, respectively), whereas the relation of P retention to pH level was weak (R2 = 0.22) but significant. There is probably an optimal level of hydraulic loading rate at which the P removal is the highest. Additional important factors determining the applicability of filter materials in treatment wetlands such as saturation time, availability at a local level, content of heavy metals, and the recyclability of saturated filter media as fertilizer should be taken into consideration.

The Tarrant Regional Water District (TRWD) is supplementing the flows to Richland-Chambers Reservoir, to meet future water supply needs of Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX. The Trinity River is the new source, but quality is not adequate. TRWD has constructed and investigated treatment wetland facilities located near the reservoir to upgrade river water quality, from an eight-year study at a 0.72 ha pilot site, and a five-year study at a 102 ha field-scale site. Both systems had a sedimentation basin followed by wetland cells in series. The pilot had two basins feeding three trains of three wetland cells each, while the field-scale system had one basin followed by four wetland cells in series. Water depths were about 30 cm for the pilot, and 40 cm for the field-scale. Design nominal detention times were roughly 5 and 9 days for pilot basins and wetland trains; and 1.5 and 8 days for the field-scale. The systems ran year-round, supplied with water pumped from the river, which at times was predominantly treated wastewater from the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The primary target contaminants were suspended solids, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Nitrogen forms in pumped flows from the river were dominated by oxidized nitrogen, which was mostly nitrate nitrogen. Pilot nitrate removal from the river water was 92%, and 61% for phosphorus, while sediment removal was 97%. Field-scale nitrate removal from the river water was 77%, and 45% for phosphorus, while sediment removal was 96%. The field-scale project is located on land owned by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and they participate in management of the wetlands for the secondary purpose of wildlife habitat.

Constructed wetland systems built to handle nutrient contaminants are often efficient at removing nitrogen, but ineffective at reducing phosphorus (P) loads. Incorporating a clay-based substrate can enhance P removal in subsurface-flow constructed wetland systems. We evaluated the potential of crushed brick, a recycled building product, and two particle sizes of a palygorskite–bentonite industrial mineral aggregate (calcined clay) to sorb P from simulated nutrient-rich plant nursery effluent. The three substrates were screened for P sorbing behavior using sorption, desorption, and equilibration experiments. We selected one substrate to evaluate in an 8-month field trial to compare field sorption capacity with laboratory sorption capacity. In the laboratory, coarse calcined clay average sorption capacity was 497 mg kg−1 and it sorbed the highest percentage of P supplied (76%), except at exposure concentrations >100 mg L−1 where the increased surface area of fine calcined clay augmented its P sorption capacity. Subsurface-flow mesocosms were filled with coarse calcined clay and exposed to a four and seven day hydraulic retention time treatment. Phosphorus export was reduced by 60 to 74% for both treatments until substrate P-binding sites began to saturate during month seven. During the eight month experiment, the four and seven day treatments fixed 1273 ± 22 mg kg−1 P and 937 ± 16 mg kg−1 P, respectively. Sequential extractions of the P saturated clay indicated that P could desorb slowly over time from various pools within the calcined clay; thus, if the calcined clay were recycled as a soil amendment, most P released would be slowly available for plant uptake and use. This study demonstrated the viability of using coarse calcined clay as a root bed substrate in subsurface-flow treatment wetlands remediating phosphorus from plant nursery runoff.

Advancing ecological restoration assessments requires a more detailed consideration of species interactions and ecosystem processes. Most restoration projects rely on a few metrics not always directly linked with ecological theory. Here, we used Odum's theory of ecosystem development to assess and compare the ecosystem structure and services of created marshes (4–6 years old) with preexisting, reference marshes in a brackish water region of the Mississippi River Delta. We built ecosystem models for created and reference marshes that integrated large datasets of stomach contents, stable isotopes, and taxa abundances. Despite strong resemblance in community structure, created marshes were at an earlier succession stage compared to the reference marshes, having lower biomass (including exploited species), higher biomass turnover and production, less dependence on detritus, lower material cycling, and less energy flowing through specialist pathways. Although preserving preexisting marshes should be a priority, created marshes may still be an important tool for the restoration of coastal areas and their ecosystem services. In addition, our results show that comparisons of species biodiversity alone may fail to capture essential differences in ecosystem processes between habitats, which reinforces the importance of ecosystem modeling approaches to assess restoration projects.

The loss of freshwater wetlands worldwide has underscored the importance of restoration to enhance biodiversity and functional objectives. While aquatic invertebrate communities within restored perennial freshwaters are well studied, few studies have occurred in the greatly reduced habitat of seasonal wetlands, such as vernal pools. California vernal pools have experienced high habitat loss and support many threatened or endangered invertebrate species. We compared 90 natural and 90 restored vernal pools of different ages across 10 sites throughout California and Southern Oregon using the Sars' method. Large branchiopod abundance, total invertebrate abundance, class richness, and community composition were assessed between pool types (natural vs. restored) and along environmental gradients (e.g. site, pool depth, surface area, age since restoration). Large branchiopod and total invertebrate abundance were 215 and 274% higher in natural pools than restored pools, but class richness was not different. Community composition was significantly different and driven by greater abundances of vernal pool fairy shrimp, San Diego fairy shrimp, Ostracoda, Cladocera, and Copepoda in natural pools. Few environmental or habitat variables explained patterns in richness or abundance. Our work demonstrates that restored pools, even those decades old, are different than natural pools. Future mitigation and monitoring guidelines for restored vernal pools should include quantitative evaluations for aquatic invertebrates. Restored pools are not adequate compensation for lost natural pools because they do not have the same ecological functions and values.

1. Reduction in diversity of both freshwater aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems has been attributed to salinity increase and such increases are a symptom of changes to land use. Hydrological alteration to ground and surface water are likely to be associated with salinity increase and its influence on biodiversity. However the combined effects of salinity and hydrology on aquatic biodiversity have not been elucidated fully in either field or experimental situations. 2. The effect of salinity and water regime on the biota in sediments from seven wetlands from inland south‐eastern Australia was tested experimentally using germination of aquatic plant seeds (five salinity and two water levels) and emergence of zooplankton eggs (five salinity levels). Salinity levels were <300, 1000, 2000, 3000, 5000 mg L?1 and water regimes were damp (waterlogged) and submerged. 3. Aquatic plant germination and zooplankton hatching was not consistent for all seven wetland sediments. Four of the wetland sediments, Narran Lakes, Gwydir Wetlands, Macquarie Marshes and Billybung Lagoon showed similar responses to salinity and water regime but the other three wetland sediments from Lake Cowal, Great Cumbung Swamp and Darling Anabranch did not. 4. As salinity increased above 1000 mg L?1 there was a decrease in the species richness and the abundance of biota germinating or hatching from sediment from four of the wetlands. 5. Salinity had a particularly strong effect in reducing germination from sediments in damp conditions when compared to the flooded conditions. In parallel, salts accumulated in the sediment in damp conditions but did not in flooded conditions. 6. There is potential for increasing salinity in freshwater rivers and wetlands to decrease the species richness of aquatic communities and thus of the wetland community as a whole, resulting in loss of wetland biodiversity. This reduction in diversity varies between wetlands and is at least partly related to hydrology. For aquatic plants the reduction in diversity will be more marked for plants germinating from seed banks at the edges of wetlands where plants are not completely submerged than for the same seed bank germinating in submerged conditions.
