One of the acknowledged limitations ofconventional toxicity tests is their inabilityto evaluate the impact of toxicants onsubsequent generations. Given their relativelyshort lifespan, cladocerans in the field may beexposed to toxicants for several generations.However, it is unclear what effect such anexposure regime could have on the cladoceranfitness after removal of the toxicant. Thispaper aimed to determine the offspring fitnessof juveniles produced by adult Ceriodaphnia cf. dubia exposed toresidual levels of 3,4-dichloroaniline overfour generations. Mass cultures of Ceriodaphnia cf. dubia were maintainedfor several generations in variousconcentrations of 3,4-dichoroaniline (0, 2.5,5, 10, 15 and 20 µg/L). The mass cultureswere re-established every generation using4th brood neonates <24 h old. Eachgeneration, 4th brood neonates <24 h oldwere also transferred individually intotoxicant-free water and examined until theproduction of their 3rd brood. F1offspring of mothers exposed to 15 and20 µg/L 3,4-dichloroaniline showedsignificantly (p < 0.05) reducedreproduction compared to the controls. Nosignificant (p > 0.05) changes inreproduction due to 3,4-dichloroaniline wereobserved for the F2 and F3 offspring. However,F4 offspring of mothers exposed to all3,4-dichloroaniline concentrations showedsignificantly (p < 0.05) increasedreproduction compared to the controls. Possibleexplanations for the varying influence ofmaternal 3,4-dichloroaniline exposure on thereproductive output of the offspring arediscussed. 相似文献

The problem of scale has three components: (a) direct measurement is usually confined to small areas and brief periods, (b)
the most pressing issues occur at the scale of ecosystems and decades, but (c) direct scale-up fails when pattern and process
at small scales differ from those at larger scales. Recognition of this dilemma has grown exponentially since around 1980.
The problem of scale is particularly acute for seabirds, which inhabit one of the most extensive habitats on the planet—the
surface of the ocean. The application of power laws is a promising solution to the problem. Power laws have a long empirical
tradition, are readily estimated from data, and now have a theoretical basis. Power law behavior (with nonintegral exponents)
appears in systems with episodically warring exponential rates. In marine ornithology, examples of areas where power laws
can be applied include patchy spatial distributions, the association of predator with prey, the scaling of food intake to
body size, and fractal habitat structure. Scaling theory and power laws are applicable to a wide variety of ecosystem phenomena
and dynamics, including fluxes of material and energy.

Simultaneously with increasing afforestation efforts in western Europe, among conservationists the consciousness is growing that protecting areas to conserve biodiversity will not be sufficient in the long term, and that also the ecological restoration of more or less severely altered areas will be necessary. The probability that recently established forest stands develop towards their ecological reference (i.e. ancient forest) depends largely on the possibility of the target species to colonize them. We focused on the colonization ability of forest plant species and particularly on so-called ancient forest plant species. Major constraints for ecological forest restoration are the spatial characteristics of the target site (isolation, shape and area), imposing dispersal limitations, and in the duration and intensity of the historical land use, leading to changes in habitat characteristics influencing recruitment probability. We reviewed the ecological literature with respect to these constraints and conclude that it takes at least a century to restore the understorey layer of recent forests, even when the target stand is adjacent to a well-developed ancient forest. Both recruitment and dispersal limitation of the target species are responsible for this. Newly established forests should therefore be situated at a minimal distance of the ancient forest source. In other cases, forest plant species will not be able to colonize the newly established forest on a measurable time scale and artificial introduction of forest plant species can be taken into consideration. The negative effects of habitat characteristics, and mainly high soil nutrient values in the recent forest stand can be mitigated by soil nutrient lowering measures. Disturbances in the recent forest should be minimized to maintain a high canopy closure level, preventing light demanding, high competitive species from establishing a stable population. An additional negative consequence of soil disturbances is that it stimulates germination of species from the soil seed bank, which is mainly composed of highly competitive or ruderal species. 相似文献

Multivariate analysis identified atwo-dimensional continuum of life-historyvariation among 301 fish species from Europe,North America, South America and the Atlanticand Pacific coasts of North America. The firstaxis was associated with larger body size,higher fecundity, delayed maturation, fewerreproductive events, and shorter breedingseason on one end and small size, lowfecundity, early maturity, multiplereproductive events per year, and prolongedbreeding season on the other. The second axiscontrasted fishes having larger eggs and moreparental care against fishes with the oppositesuite of traits.Phylogenetic affiliations of species wereapparent in the general patterns of ordinationof species within orders, indicatingevolutionary divergences in life-historypatterns. In fact, partitioning the variance oflife-history traits showed that taxonomic orderand latitude were the most important factorsand geographic region and habitat the least.Despite phylogenetic constraints, basiclife-history patterns showed consistencybetween distantly geographical regions,latitudinal ranges and basic adult habitats,indicating convergences in life-historypatterns. Although the basic life-historypatterns seemed repeatable among distantlyrelated taxa, geographical and latitudinalaffiliations were apparent. Species from SouthAmerica are skewed toward the opportunisticendpoint, whereas North American marine speciesare skewed toward the periodic endpoint of thetrilateral continuum model. Most of the fishspecies from South American data set came fromfluctuating environments, so an opportunisticstrategy of early maturation and continuousspawning permits efficient recolonization ofhabitats over small spatial scales. Incontrast, most species in the North Americanand European data sets came from seasonalhabitats that are nonetheless more hydrologicalstable, so a periodic strategy of delayingmaturation to attain large clutches enhancesadult survivorship during suboptimalenvironmental conditions and recruitment whenearly life stages encounter suitableenvironmental conditions. The aim of this study was to investigate the existence of synchronic fluctuation patterns in cladoceran populations of the Upper Paraná River floodplain. The following hypothesis were tested: (i) the populations of a given species present the same fluctuation pattern in abundance for different environments and (ii) synchrony is higher when we consider subsets of neighboring environments or those belonging to the same category (e.g., lagoons, rivers). Samplings were performed every three months from February 2000 to November 2002 at 11 sites. To evaluate spatial synchrony, the intraclass correlation coefficient was used. The results showed no significant correlation for the most abundant species, meaning that fluctuation patterns of planktonic cladocerans were asynchronous. Asynchrony indicated that the influence of floods and regional climatic factors was not strong enough to synchronize the populations, suggesting that local factors were more important than regional effects in determining zooplankton abundance patterns. The implications of these results are that the observations from a single environment cannot be extrapolated to other environments in a manner that would allow its use as a sentinel site. Maternally derived traits, such as within-clutch variation inthe amount of testosterone deposited in egg yolks, may haveprofound effects on offspring fitness. Offspring with elevatedlevels of testosterone may benefit from increased competitiveability through effects on aggression and growth rate. However,elevated levels of testosterone are also associated with costsof increased peroxidative damage from free radicals and consequentoxidative stress. Diet-derived antioxidants, such as vitaminE and various carotenoids, provide protection against the deleteriouseffects of oxidative stress. Here we show that within-clutchvariation in yolk testosterone is the opposite to that of yolkantioxidant concentration in the lesser black-backed gull Larusfuscus. We provide evidence that suggests that these two direct
maternal effects are, in fact, complementary and, in conjunctionwith an indirect maternal effect (the onset of incubation),may provide an adaptive mechanism for parental favoritism inresponse to environmental variability. The potential implicationsof these findings with respect to previous investigations onvariation in yolk testosterone concentrations and on the understandingof intrafamilial dynamics are discussed. 相似文献

The temporal heterogeneity of chum salmon stock of the Anadyr Bay region was investigated on the basis of a set of discrete external morphological features and fluctuating asymmetry level of some meristic structures. Differentiation of Anadyr Bay chum salmon during the spawning run was found to be associated with the abundance level of spawning stock in a particular year. Sharply pronounced temporal heterogeneity, based on the investigated characteristics, in the area near the river mouth can be considered as an indicator of the subsequent deficiency of spawners on the spawning grounds of rivers in the Anadyr Bay region. 相似文献

The main concern regarding methylmercury neurotoxicity relates to adverse effects on the brain during development. Many environmental chemicals may act as developmental neurotoxicants, but solid documentation from epidemiological studies exists only on methylmercury, lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Neurobehavioral tests may reveal subtle dysfunctions, but the tests chosen must be valid and appropriate for the setting. In a prospective study in the Faroe Islands, the main neuropsychological functions affected by prenatal methylmercury exposure were attention, language and memory. Deficits in visuospatial function were mainly related to postnatal exposures. These associations were stable after adjustment for confounders and exclusion of the children with the highest exposures to methylmercury and PCBs. Tests with good psychometric properties were more likely to show an association with mercury exposure. Greater sensitivity was also seen with tests administered by specialized academic staff rather than a trained technician. Despite highly significant effects on nervous system function, the deficits were subtle, and mercury exposure explained only a small part of the variation. Available evidence suggests that neurotoxicity may have severe implications on public health, but current methods are not amenable to application as sentinels of adverse health effects in environmental health surveillance. 相似文献

In a laboratory study of maturation feeding of female pine weevil Hylobius abietis on current and 1‐year‐old stem bark of transplants of Scots and Corsican pine, Norway and Sitka spruce, Douglas fir, and hybrid larch, the length of the pre‐oviposition period was influenced by the species on which weevils fed. The shortest pre‐oviposition period was on hybrid larch (11.8 days) and the longest on Douglas fir (15.5 days). 2. The species on which weevils fed also affected fecundity but there was evidence of a species–year interaction. Over a period of 36 days, most eggs were laid by weevils feeding on current stem of Norway spruce and Corsican and Scots pine and fewest on current stem of Sitka spruce. 3. Significant maternal effects on egg size were observed both in relation to female size and conifer species. The largest eggs were laid on Corsican pine and the smallest on Douglas fir, with no evidence of a trade‐off between number of eggs laid and their size. 4. There was a positive relationship between egg and larval size and between larval size and survival on logs of four conifer species. Residual resistance mechanisms in the bark of recently cut stumps and larval competition are discussed briefly in relation to the importance of the observed maternal effects on weevil population dynamics. 相似文献

The morphological variability of the temporal articular tubercle was studied inHomo erectus andHomo sapiens. Five configurations have been defined. There is a high heterogeneity amongHomo erectus. The Neandertal lineage and that leading toHomo sapiens sapiens are more homogenous, each of them exhibits a high frequency of one configuration. This study has also focused on the functional
implications of this variation. A theoretical approach to two different configurations of the articular tubercle is considered
in the same bony, muscular and ligamentary context. This suggests that the configuration which consists of a transverse concavity
is, for the mandible depression, concomitant with a slight functional disadvantage in comparison with the cylindrical configuration.
It appears that a midfacial projection allows for a compensation of this disadvantage. It is concluded that this model can
be proposed for Neandertals which present a very concave articular tubercle and a typical midfacial projection. 相似文献
