The rate of development of Lymnaea auricularia eggs was studied at various constant temperatures between 10° and 36°C. Development was accelerated as the temperature increased and at 36°C the eggs failed to develop. Spring eggs showed differences in their rate of development when compared with summer eggs when measured at similar tempertures.

Both spring and summer eggs were more than 90% fertile. Hatching success was high at temperatures between 10° and 30° (100%–82/9%); while at 34°C it was reduced to 60.6% for spring eggs. It was above 87% at temperatures between 10° and 34°C but it dropped to 62.3% at 36°C for summer eggs.

In one regularly changing temperature experiment a significant acceleration (P < .05) was found. In two others there was no significant difference beween predicted and observed egg durations. In one suddenly changing temperature regime (1 day at 20°, 1 day at 30° and so on) a huge retardation of development was found. In the other suddenly changing experiment (1 day at 15°, 1 day at 25°) no significant difference was found.

The exposure of eggs to extreme temperature (4°C, freezing and 4°C caused a retardation in the race of subsequent development of eggs at 25°C.  相似文献

Since 1994, our research has demonstrated how thermophysiological responses are mobilized in human volunteers exposed to three radio frequencies, 100, 450, and 2450 MHz. A significant gap in this frequency range is now filled by the present study, conducted at 220 MHz. Thermoregulatory responses of heat loss and heat production were measured in six adult volunteers (five males, one female, aged 24-63 years) during 45 min whole body dorsal exposures to 220 MHz radio frequency (RF) energy. Three power densities (PD = 9, 12, and 15 mW/cm(2) [1 mW/cm(2) = 10 W/m(2)], whole body average normalized specific absorption rate [SAR] = 0.045 [W/kg]/[mW/cm(2)] = 0.0045 [W/kg]/[W/m(2)]) were tested at each of three ambient temperatures (T(a) = 24, 28, and 31 degrees C) plus T(a) controls (no RF). Measured responses included esophageal (T(esoph)) and seven skin temperatures (T(sk)), metabolic rate (M), local sweat rate, and local skin blood flow (SkBF). Derived measures included heart rate (HR), respiration rate, and total evaporative water loss (EWL). Finite difference-time domain (FDTD) modeling of a seated 70 kg human exposed to 220 MHz predicted six localized "hot spots" at which local temperatures were also measured. No changes in M occurred under any test condition, while T(esoph) showed small changes (< or =0.35 degrees C) but never exceeded 37.3 degrees C. As with similar exposures at 100 MHz, local T(sk) changed little and modest increases in SkBF were recorded. At 220 MHz, vigorous sweating occurred at PD = 12 and 15 mW/cm(2), with sweating levels higher than those observed for equivalent PD at 100 MHz. Predicted "hot spots" were confirmed by local temperature measurements. The FDTD model showed the local SAR in deep neural tissues that harbor temperature-sensitive neurons (e.g., brainstem, spinal cord) to be greater at 220 than at 100 MHz. Human exposure at both 220 and 100 MHz results in far less skin heating than occurs during exposure at 450 MHz. However, the exposed subjects thermoregulate efficiently because of increased heat loss responses, particularly sweating. It is clear that these responses are controlled by neural signals from thermosensors deep in the brainstem and spinal cord, rather than those in the skin.  相似文献

Traditionally lower and upper temperature tolerances of fishes have been quantified in the laboratory via three different experimental approaches: the Fry or incipient lethal temperature (ILT), critical thermal (CTM) and chronic lethal (CLM) methodologies. Although these three experimental laboratory approaches generate endpoints which are quantitatively expressed as a temperature, are determined experimentally with random samples of fish acclimated to specific temperatures, and involve both time and temperature as major test variables, they do not quantify the same response. All three approaches generate valuable, albeit different, information concerning the temperature tolerance of a species. In this review we have summarized published research concerning the tolerance of North American freshwater fishes to dynamic changes in temperature, i.e., tolerance is tested by methods that gradually change temperatures until biological stress is observed. We found more than 450 individual temperature tolerances listed in 80 publications which present original dynamic temperature tolerance data for 116 species, 7 subspecies and 7 hybrids from 19 families of North American freshwater fishes. This total represents about 1/3 of the families and 1/6 of the known North American freshwater species. Temperature tolerance data were partitioned by experimental approach, i.e., critical thermal method (CTM) and chronic lethal method (CLM), and direction of temperature change. Although both CTM and CLM expose fish to dynamic changes in water temperature, these two methods differ in temperature change rates and test endpoints, and hence measure different aspects of thermal stress. A majority of the 80 studies employed CTM to assess temperature tolerance, in particular determination of CTmaxima. One or more CTmaxima has been reported for 108 fishes. Twenty-two fishes have reported highest CTmaxima of 40°C or higher. Several species in the family Cyprinodontidae have generated some of the highest CTmaxima reported for any ectothermic vertebrate. For a variety of reasons, data concerning tolerance of low temperatures are less plentiful. Low temperature tolerance quantified as either CTminima or CLminima were found for a total of 37 fishes. Acclimation temperature exerts a major effect on the temperature tolerance of most North American fish species and it is usually strongly linearly related to both CTmaxima and CTminima. Although we uncovered dynamic temperature tolerance data for 130 fishes, only a single dynamic, temperature tolerance polygon has been published, that for the sheepshead minnow, Cyprinodon variegatus.  相似文献

The distribution of the brown rnorph of the landsnail Cepaea nemoralis in part of the Brendon Hills, Somerset is described. The morph is at a high frequency on north-facing slopes, valley bottoms, and in a broad partly-enclosed basin. It is argued that low temperature is the selective agent. Alternative explanations are considered. In two population cages adult brown-shelled snails survived less well than pink five-banded ones during the summer months, this trend being reversed in the autumn. It is concluded that the experimental results support the 'climatic' interpretation of distributional data.  相似文献

Synopsis Literature on the temperature requirements of fishes expected to occur in eastern Lake Erie and the upper Niagara River is reviewed. Seventy-four species of fishes are reported from Lake Erie and sixty-one from the upper Niagara River. Incipient upper lethal temperatures range from 23° C for Salmo trutta to 41° C for Carassius auratus and Ictalurus nebulosus. Preferred temperatures ranged from 10° C for Coregonus clupeaformis to 31.1° C for Lepomis macrochirus. Spawning temperatures range from < 3.8° C for C. artedii to 15.6–27.7° C for Alosa pseudoharengus. Data is discussed in terms of the effects of thermal effluents on individuals of a species, structure of aquatic communities and impact on ecosystems. Synergistic effects of temperature and toxicants and disruption of sprawning are potentially the most damaging direct effects of thermal effluents. Heated water may be contributing to the present rate of eutrophication in the lake and river. Increased input of thermal effluents into the eastern basin of Lake Erie will maintain a stress on the fishery and may irreversibly damage it.  相似文献

Recently, we developed a novel method for estimating human circadian phase with noninvasive ambulatory measurements combined with subject-independent multiple regression models and a curve-fitting approach. With this, we were able to estimate circadian phase under real-life conditions with low subject burden, i.e., without need of constant routine (CR) laboratory conditions, and without measuring standard circadian markers, such as core body temperature (CBT) or pineal hormone melatonin rhythms. The precision of ambulatory-derived estimated circadian phase was within an error of 12?±?41?min (mean?±?SD) in comparison to melatonin phase during a CR protocol. The physiological measures could be reduced to a triple combination: skin temperatures, irradiance in the blue spectral band of ambient light, and motion acceleration. Here, we present a nonlinear regression model approach based on artificial neural networks for a larger data set (25 healthy young males), including both the original data and additional data collected in the same protocol and using the same equipment. Throughout our validation study, subjects wore multichannel ambulatory monitoring devices and went about their daily routine for 1 wk. The devices collected a large number of physiological, behavioral, and environmental variables, including CBT, skin temperatures, cardiovascular and respiratory functions, movement/posture, ambient temperature, spectral composition and intensity of light perceived at eye level, and sleep logs. After the ambulatory phase, study volunteers underwent a 32-h CR protocol in the laboratory for measuring unmasked circadian phase (i.e., “midpoint” of the nighttime melatonin rhythm). To overcome the complex masking effects of many different confounding variables during ambulatory measurements, neural network–based nonlinear regression techniques were applied in combination with the cross-validation approach to subject-independent prediction of circadian phase. The most accurate estimate of circadian phase with a prediction error of ?3?±?23?min (mean?±?SD) was achieved using only two types of the measured variables: skin temperatures and irradiance for ambient light in the blue spectral band. Compared to our previous linear multiple regression modeling approach, motion acceleration data can be excluded and prediction accuracy, nevertheless, improved. Neural network regression showed statistically significant improvement of variance of prediction error over traditional approaches in determining circadian phase based on single predictors (CBT, motion acceleration, or sleep logs), even though none of these variables was included as predictor. We, therefore, have identified two sets of noninvasive measures that, combined with the prediction model, can provide researchers and clinicians with a precise measure of internal time, in spite of the masking effects of daily behavior. This method, here validated in healthy young men, requires testing in a clinical or shiftwork population suffering from circadian sleep-wake disorders. (Author correspondence: )  相似文献

The aim of the study was to investigate whether women with primary vascular dysregulation (VD; main symptoms of thermal discomfort with cold extremities) and difficulties initiating sleep (DIS) exhibit a disturbed phase of entrainment (Ψ) under everyday life conditions. The authors predicted a phase delay of the distal-proximal skin temperature gradient and salivary melatonin rhythms with respect to the sleep-wake cycle in women with VD and DIS (WVD) compared to controls (CON), similar to that found in their previous constant-routine laboratory data. A total of 41 young healthy women, 20 with WVD and 21 matched CON without VD and normal sleep onset latency (SOL), were investigated under ambulatory conditions (following their habitual bedtimes) during 7 days of continuous recording of skin temperatures, sleep-wake cycles monitored by actimetry and sleep-wake diaries, and single evening saliva collections for determining the circadian marker of dim light melatonin onset (DLMO). Compared to CON, WVD showed increased distal vasoconstriction at midday and in the evening, as indicated by lower distal (DIST; hands and feet) and foot-calf skin temperatures, and distal-proximal skin temperature gradients (p?<?.05). WVD manifested distal vasoconstriction before lights-off that also lasted longer after lights-off than in CON. In parallel, WVD exhibited a longer SOL (p?<?.05). To define internal phase-relationships, cross-correlation analyses were performed using diurnal rhythms of wrist activity and foot skin temperature. WVD showed a phase delay in foot skin temperature (CON versus WVD: 3.57?±?17.28?min versus 38.50?±?16.65?min; p?<?.05) but not in wrist activity. This finding was validated by additional within-subject cross-correlation analyses using the diurnal wrist activity pattern as reference. DLMO and habitual sleep times did not differ between CON and WVD. The authors conclude that WVD exhibit a phase delay of distal vasodilatation with respect to their habitual sleep-wake cycle and other circadian phase markers, such as DLMO. A full factorial design will have to show whether the finding is specific to primary vascular dysregualtion, to DIS, or to their interaction. (Author correspondence: )  相似文献

The present study analyzed the relationship between bovine oocytes developmental competence and mRNA expression of apoptotic and mitochondrial genes following the change of vitrification temperatures (VTs) and cryoprotectant agent concentrations (CPAs). Cumulus oocyte complexes were randomly divided into five groups: control, vitrified in liquid nitrogen (LN; −196 °C) with 5.6 M CPAs (LN 5.6 M), LN with 6.6 M CPAs (LN 6.6 M), liquid helium (LHe; −269 °C) with 5.6 M CPAs (LHe 5.6 M), and LHe with 6.6 M CPAs (LHe 6.6 M). After vitrification and warming, oocytes of vitrified and control groups were subjected to in vitro maturation (IVM), in vitro fertilization and in vitro culture. The blastocyst rate in LHe 5.6 M group was the highest among the four vitrified groups (13.7% vs. 9.4%, 1.3%, and 8.4%; P < 0.05). The mRNA expression level of 8 apoptotic- and 12 mitochondria-related genes were detected through qRT-PCR after IVM. Lower VT (LHe, −269 °C) positively affected the mRNA expression levels of apoptotic genes (BAD, BID, BTK, TP53, and TP53I3) and mitochondrial genes (COX6B1, DERA, FIS1, NDUFA1, NDUFA4, PRDX2, SLC25A5, TFB1M, and UQCRB), and reduced oxidative stress from freezing. Decreased CPAs (5.6 M) positively affected mRNA expression levels of apoptotic genes (BAD, BCL2A1, BID, and CASP3) in LHe vitrification but negatively affected apoptotic genes (BAD, BAX, BID, BTK, and BCL2A1) in LN vitrification. In conclusion, decreased VTs and CPAs in LHe vitrification may increase the blastocyst rate by changing the mRNA expression levels of these apoptotic and mitochondrial genes for the vitrified oocytes.  相似文献

High power and energy density, long cyclability, and tolerance for wide temperature (seasonal and daily operational temperature differences) must be considered to construct large‐scale sodium secondary batteries. In this regard, Na3V2(PO4)2F3 (NVPF) has become a subject of interest as a high‐performance positive electrode material owing to its high energy density. However, the high operating voltage of NVPF causes continuous decomposition of electrolytes during cycles, resulting in significant capacity fading and low Coulombic efficiency. In this study, the electrochemical performance of the NVPF electrode in organic solvent electrolytes with and without additives and an ionic liquid is investigated at high voltage regimes over a wide temperature range (?20 °C to 90 °C). The results reveal that the performance of organic electrolytes is still insufficient even with additives, and the ionic liquid electrolyte demonstrates high electrochemical stability and cyclability with NVPF electrodes over a temperature range from ?20 °C to 90 °C, achieving stable cycling over 500 cycles. The detailed electrochemical analysis combined with X‐ray photoelectron and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy indicates that a sturdy cathode electrolyte interphase layer around the electrode protects it from capacity fading at high voltage and elevated temperature, resulting in high Coulombic efficiency.  相似文献
