In non-reciprocal cross-incompatibility (NRCI), the crossing of a female of a strain A with a male of a strain B results in hybrid offspring, whereas the reciprocal cross produces few or no hybrids. Only females are of hybrid origin in Hymenoptera because they arise from fertilized eggs; males arise from unfertilized (haploid) eggs. Crosses between many strains of Trichogramma deion showed some degree of NRCI. Crosses between a T. deion culture collected in Seven Pines, California (SVP) with one from Marysville, California (MRY) showed an extreme form of NRCI in which practically no female offspring was produced when MRY females were crossed with SVP males. The reciprocal cross produced a close to normal proportion of female and male offspring. Detailed studied of this cross indicated that 1) the female offspring produced in the compatible interstrain cross were not the result of parthenogenesis but were true hybrids, 2) the incompatible interstrain cross did not produce female offspring because fertilized eggs died during development, 3) the death of these eggs could not be prevented by either antibiotic or temperature treatment, 4) cytoplasmically inherited factors causing NRCI could be discounted because backcrossed females with the genome of MRY and the cytoplasm of SVP, exhibit the NRCI relationship characteristic of their genome. Therefore the NRCI between these strains appears to be caused by a modification coded for by the nuclear genes of MRY that results in incompatibility when SVP sperm fertilizes MRY eggs. In addition the level of incompatibility in crosses between the SVP females and MRY males is temperature sensitive, the higher the rearing temperature the lower the level of compatibility.  相似文献

Age-specific life tables of two important pests of cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., the pod sucking bugs Clavigralla tomentosicollis Stål and C. shadabi Dolling (Heteroptera: Coreidae), were obtained from observations carried out at different temperatures. A biophysical model was found satisfactory to describe the temperature-response of developmental and mortality rates of egg and nymphal stages, with a peak developmental rate around 34°C in both species. The variability in development times was small and the experimental data did not permit any conclusion with regard to the Erlang probability density function. Survival of eggs and nymphs remained high between 20° and 30°C for both species. At temperatures above 34°C, C. tomentosicollis survivorship and fecundity was higher than that of C. shadabi, which in turn laid more eggs at temperatures between 20° and 30°C. Maximum fecundity is estimated to be at 29°C for C. tomentosicollis (99 eggs/female) and 26°C for C. shadabi (261 eggs/female). At 30°C, the intrinsic rate of increase reached a maximum in both species, 0.152 per day for C. tomentosicollis and 0.145 per day for C. shadabi, and remained high for C. tomentosicollis until 36°C. C. tomentosicollis performed significantly better on pigeonpea, Cajanus cajan Millsp., than on cowpea at higher temperatures.  相似文献

We have measured the Soret band of the photoproduct obtained by complete photolysis of sperm whale carbonmonoxymyoglobin at 10 K. The experimental spectrum has been modeled with an analytical expression that takes into account the homogeneous bandwidth, the coupling of the electronic transition with both high and low frequency vibrational modes, and the effects of static conformational heterogeneity. The comparison with deoxymyoglobin at low temperature reveals three main differences. In the photoproduct, the Soret band is shifted to red. The band is less asymmetric, and an enhanced coupling to the heme vibrational mode at 674 cm−1 is observed. These differences reflect incomplete relaxation of the active site after ligand dissociation. The smaller band asymmetry of the photoproduct can be explained by a smaller displacement of the iron atom from the mean porphyrin plane, in quantitative agreement with the X-ray structure analysis. The enhanced vibrational coupling is attributed to a subtle heme distortion from the planar geometry that is barely detectable in the X-ray structure.  相似文献

Collections of lily genotypes are usually maintained by yearly planting, harvesting and storage of the bulbs. To facilitate this maintenance, a storage method has been developed for a collection of lily genotypes, including Asiatic hybrids, Oriental hybrids, Lilium longiflorum and L. henryi. Scale bulblets were stored either dry, sealed air-tight in polyethylene bags, or in moist vermiculite in open polyethylene bags for a period of 2 yr. The decrease in mass, sprouting proportion and ion leakage or sprouting proportion alone were determined for treatments carried out at -2°C, °C and 17°C. Sealing scale bulblets in polyethylene bags at -2°C resulted in the smallest decrease in mass, the least ion leakage and the highest sprouting proportion after 2 yr of storage.  相似文献

Some plants in arctic and alpine habitats have heliotropic flowers that track the sun. This results in a heating of the flower's interior, which may improve the possibilities for insect pollination and seed production. Here, I examine whether flower heliotropism in an alpine population of the self-incompatible Ranunculus acris L. (Ranunculaceae) enhances pollinator visitation and seed production. Flowers of Ranunculus acris tracked the sun during the day. Tracking accuracy was greatest during the middle of the day. The temperature elevation in flowers was negatively correlated with the flower's angle of deviation from the sun. Despite the increased temperature, insects did not discriminate among flowers on the basis of their angle of deviation from the sun, or tend to stay longer in the flowers aligned closest towards the sun. A tethering experiment was conducted on three groups of plants flowering at different times in the 1993 season and on one group the following season. Manipulation plants were constrained not to track the sun, whereas control plants tracked the sun naturally. Solar tracking had no effect on seed:ovule ratio, seed mass, or abortion rate in any of the groups. There is probably a very narrow range of weather conditions (cold, sunny, and calm) where flower heliotropism may enhance visitation rate to flowers and their seed production.  相似文献

Air temperature and the atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide are expected to rise. These two factor have a great potential to affect development, growth and yield of crops, including wheat. Rising air temperature may affect wheat development more than rising atmospheric CO2 as there is not yet evidence that elevated CO2 concentrations can directly induce changes in wheat development. In winter wheat, temperature has a complex effect on development due to its strong interaction with vernalization and photoperiod. In this paper, potential effects of rising temperature on the development of winter wheat from sowing to heading are considered in the light of this complex controlling mechanism. Data from a large series of field trials made in Romania is analysed at first and, subsequently, the IATA-Wheat Phenology model is used to calculate the impact of air warming on wheat development under different climate change scenarios. Data from the field trials showed very clearly the occurrence of a complex temperature/photoperiod/vernalization interaction for field sown crops and demostrated that the photoperiodic and vernalization responses have a key role in controlling the duration of the emergence-heading period. Temperature plays, instead, a central role in controlling seed germination and crop emergence as well as leaf inititiation and leaf appearance rate. The results of model analysis showed very well that the impact of an even or uneven distribution of warning effects may be very different. In the first case, the model predicted that the duration of the vegetative period was at least partly reduced in some years. In the second case, the model suggested that if warming will be more pronounced in winter than in spring, as predicted for some areas of the world by General Circulation Models, we may expect an increase in the duration of the vegetative phase of growth. On the contrary, in case of a spring warming but unchanged winter temperatures, we may expect a substantial decrease in the duration of the vegetative period.  相似文献

The specific monoclonal antibody productivity (q(Mab)) of a murine hybridoma (CC9C10) increased with incubation temperature in the range 33 degrees C to 39 degrees C. q(Mab) was constant at each temperature and was independent of the phase of culture. The q(Mab) increased 97% at 39 degrees C and decreased by 21% at 33 degrees C compared with controls at 37 degrees C. Specific rates of substrate (glucose and glutamine) utilization and byproduct (lactate and ammonia) formation also increased with temperature but the yield coefficient, Y(Lac/Llc') was constant for 33 degrees C to 39 degrees C and Y(Amm/Gin) was constant for 37 degrees C to 39 degrees C. Y(Amm/Gin) at 33 degrees C was lower than the control. Changes in specific nucleotide concentrations and ratios were monitored by analysis of intracellular nucleotide pools. The NTP ratio, (ATP + GTP)/(UTP + CTP), increased and the U-ratio (UTP/UDP-GNac) decreased during the course of each culture, whereas the adenylate energy charge, (ATP + 0.5ADP)/(ATP + ADP + AMP), remained relatively constant at a value 0.8. The relative content of UDP-/N acetyl galactosamine, UDP-N acetyl glucosamine, and NAD increased with incubation temperature, whereas the relative ATP content, SA(ATP + ADP + AMP)/SU (UTP + UDP-sugars) ratio, purine/pyrimidine, ATP/GTP, and U-ratio decreased at higher incubation temperatures. The variation for embryo production in anther ofSolanum phureja was examined as a function of maximum greenhouse temperature prior to bud harvest and innate responsiveness among anthers within a bud. Four clones ofS. phuyreja were grown in a greenhouse under a 16-h photoperiod. The temperature was monitored continuously. Buds (60 per day on 10 days) were collected and the anthers cultured in two groups of five flasks (30 anthers per flask). In the first group, each flask contained the 30 anthers from six buds; in the second group, each flask contained one anther from each of 30 buds. Significantly smaller coefficients of variation were observed for the second group, suggesting that variation for embryogenic capcity among buds was greater than that among anthers within a bud. Variation in embryo yield as a function of greenhouse temperature was examined by stepwise regression analysis. Embryogenic capacity of one clone was adversely affected by high temperatures (31–37°C) that occurred two and seven days before bud harvest. However, similarly high temperatures appeared to enhance the androgenic response of another clone. Conversion of anther-derived embryos over three subcultures to fresh regeneration medium was examined as a function of anther donor or clone, cold pretreatment of embryos, and morphological classification of embryos. Only clonal origin significantly affected conversion rate which ranged from 12.5% to 46.0%. In areas with short growing seasons, poor early vegetative growth of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) is often attributed to the restrictive effect of cool soil conditions on nodulation and N2-fixation by this subtropical grain legume. However, there are few studies regarding potential genetic variability of soybean and Bradyrhizobium japonicum genotypes for nodulation at cool root-zone temperatures (RZT). Experiments were conducted to (1) test for a threshold temperature for low RZT inhibition of soybean nodulation and (2) ascertain whether this threshold temperature response depends mainly on the micro- or macrosymbiont. In experiment 1 soybean seedlings (Glycine max [L.] Merr. cv. Maple Arrow) were inoculated with 1 ml of a log phase culture of B. japonicum strain 532C, H8 or H15 (the latter two strains were isolated from cold soils of Hokkaido, northern Japan) and maintained at either 16, 17.5, 19 or 25°C RZT. In experiment 2 seedlings of cv. Maple Arrow and a cold-tolerant Evans isoline were combined with strain 532C and two Hokkaido strains (H5, H30) at both 19 and 25°C RZT. Results indicated that N2-fixation at 44 days after inoculation was substantially reduced (30–40%) by RZT as high as 19°C, due to development of less nodule mass and to a delay in the onset of N2-fixation and a small decrease in the number of nodules formed. However, the number of nodules formed was sharply reduced and the time required for the first appearance of nodules was significantly delayed below an RZT of 17.5°C. Differences between cultivars for nodulation and N accumulation were apparent at 25°C, but were abolished by growth at 19°C, indicating that, in spite of differences in growth potential between the cultivars under optimum RZT, both cultivars were equally limited by low RZT. Differences between B. japonicum strains were consistent across temperatures and were largely attributable to higher rates of specific nodule activity recorded for strain 532C, which seemed well adapted to low RZT. These results suggest that the host plant mediates the sensitivity of N2-fixation under low RZT and that inoculation with B. japonicum strains from cold environments is unlikely to enhance soybean N2-fixation under cool soil conditions.  相似文献

The effects of rearing and acclimation on the response of adultDrosophila to temperature were investigated in a gradient.D. melanogaster flies preferred a higher mean temperature and were distributed over a wider range of temperatures thanD. simulans flies. Acclimating adults at different temperatures for a week did not influence the response of either species. Adults reared at 28°C as immatures had a lower mean preference than those reared at cooler temperatures, suggesting that flies compensated for the effects of rearing conditions. Adults from tropical and temperate populations ofD. melanogaster andD. simulans did not differ in the mean temperature they preferred in a gradient, suggesting little genetic divergence for this trait within species. The species differences and environmental responses may be related to changes in optimal physiological conditions for the flies.  相似文献
