An Ecological Imbalance Induced by a Non-Native Species: The Manila Clam in the Venice Lagoon 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
F. Pranovi G. Franceschini M. Casale M. Zucchetta P. Torricelli O. Giovanardi 《Biological invasions》2006,8(4):595-609
Among the 19 non-native species of marine invertebrates which have invaded the Venice Lagoon and have established populations, Ruditapes philippinarum, deliberately introduced in 1983, is surely the most successful species. According to the hypothesis that alien species invasion could be favoured by an altered ecological, chemical or physical state of the system induced by anthropogenic disturbance, R. philippinarum turned out to be ‘the right species at the right moment’. By comparing historical data (1968, 1985, 1990) with 1999 data, changes in macrobenthic community, in particular bivalve molluscs, of the lagoon induced by R. philippinarum introduction and subsequent clam exploiting activity were assessed. It has been possible to describe a sharp reduction, both in terms of distribution area and density, of all other filter feeder bivalves. Moreover, by using the clearance rate of the most abundant bivalve species in 1990 and 1999 (Cerastoderma glaucum and R. philippinarum, respectively), it was possible to estimate that the filtration capacity, expressed as l h−1 m−2, has more than doubled. This has altered the functioning of the ecosystem, resulting in a stronger benthic–pelagic coupling. In this context, R. philippinarum attains control of the system. Considering all this, it is possible to state that the Venice Lagoon ecosystem has entered into a new state, probably more resistant but less resilient, with implications for future management choices. 相似文献

Distinguishing between cryptic species is a perennial problem for biologists. Bombus ruderatus and Bombus hortorum are two species of bumblebee, which can be indistinguishable from their morphology. The former species is in decline, whereas the latter is ubiquitous. In the UK, isolated records of B. ruderatus occur amongst many for B. hortorum. For ecological studies of B. ruderatus to be feasible, the two species need to be reliably distinguishable. We present a diagnostic tool for quick and reliable identification of problematic individuals based on a restriction enzyme digest of the cytochrome b region of mitochondrial DNA. 相似文献

Novel strategies for assessing and managing the risks posed by invasive alien species to global crop production and biodiversity 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
RICHARD BAKER RAY CANNON PAUL BARTLETT IAN BARKER 《The Annals of applied biology》2005,146(2):177-191
International actions to combat the threat posed by invasive alien species (IAS) to crops and biodiversity have intensified in recent years. The formulation of 15 guiding principles on IAS by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) stimulated the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) to review its role in protecting biodiversity. IPPC standards now demonstrate clearly that the risks posed by any organism that is directly or indirectly injurious to cultivated or uncultivated plants can be assessed and managed under the IPPC. Since the IPPC, unlike the CBD, constitutes an international legal instrument recognised by the World Trade Organization, greater protection from the introduction of IAS is now available. However, phytosanitary measures can only be enacted if they can be justified by risk analysis and we outline some novel strategies to improve the assessment and management of the risks posed by IAS, highlighting some of the key challenges which remain. 相似文献

Size-related changes in hydraulic architecture, carbon allocation and gas exchange of Sclerolobium paniculatum (Leguminosae), a dominant tree species in Neotropical savannas of central Brazil (Cerrado), were investigated to assess their potential role in the dieback of tall individuals. Trees greater than ∼6-m-tall exhibited more branch damage, larger numbers of dead individuals, higher wood density, greater leaf mass per area, lower leaf area to sapwood area ratio (LA/SA), lower stomatal conductance and lower net CO2 assimilation than small trees. Stem-specific hydraulic conductivity decreased, while leaf-specific hydraulic conductivity remained nearly constant, with increasing tree size because of lower LA/SA in larger trees. Leaves were substantially more vulnerable to embolism than stems. Large trees had lower maximum leaf hydraulic conductance ( K leaf ) than small trees and all tree sizes exhibited lower K leaf at midday than at dawn. These size-related adjustments in hydraulic architecture and carbon allocation apparently incurred a large physiological cost: large trees received a lower return in carbon gain from their investment in stem and leaf biomass compared with small trees. Additionally, large trees may experience more severe water deficits in dry years due to lower capacity for buffering the effects of hydraulic path-length and soil water deficits. 相似文献

Host tree resistance against the polyphagous wood-boring beetle Anoplophora glabripennis 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
W.D. Morewood K. Hoover P.R. Neiner J.R. McNeil & J.C. Sellmer 《Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata》2004,110(1):79-86
Anoplophora glabripennis (Motschulsky) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae: Lamiini) is an invasive wood‐boring beetle with an unusually broad host range and a proven ability to increase its host range as it colonizes new areas and encounters new tree species. The beetle is native to eastern Asia and has become an invasive pest in North America and Europe, stimulating interest in delineating host and non‐host tree species more clearly. When offered a choice among four species of living trees in a greenhouse, adult A. glabripennis fed more on golden‐rain tree (Koelreuteria paniculata Laxmann) and river birch (Betula nigra L.) than on London planetree (Platanus × acerifolia (Aiton) Willdenow) or callery pear (Pyrus calleryana Decaisne). Oviposition rate was highest in golden‐rain tree, but larval mortality was also high and larval growth was slowest in this tree species. Oviposition rate was lowest in callery pear, and larvae failed to survive in this tree species, whether they eclosed from eggs laid in the trees or were manually inserted into the trees. Adult beetles feeding on callery pear had a reduced longevity and females feeding only on callery pear failed to develop any eggs. The resistance of golden‐rain tree against the larvae appears to operate primarily through the physical mechanism of abundant sap flow. The resistance of callery pear against both larvae and adults appears to operate through the chemical composition of the tree, which may include compounds that are toxic or which otherwise interfere with normal growth and development of the beetle. Unlike river birch or London planetree, both golden‐rain tree and callery pear are present in the native range of A. glabripennis and may therefore have developed resistance to the beetle by virtue of exposure to attack during their evolutionary history. 相似文献

The Importance of Hydrodynamics for Protected and Endangered Biodiversity of Lowland Rivers 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
R. J. W. de Nooij W. C. E. P. Verberk H. J. R. Lenders R. S. E. W. Leuven P. H. Nienhuis 《Hydrobiologia》2006,565(1):153-162
This paper examines the relationship between protected and endangered riverine species (target species) and hydrodynamics
in river-floodplain ecosystems, combining ecological and policy-legal aspects of biodiversity conservation in river management.
The importance of different hydrodynamic conditions along a lateral gradient was quantified for various taxonomic groups.
Our results show that (i) target species require ecotopes along the entire hydrodynamic gradient; (ii) different parts of
the hydrodynamic gradient are important to different species, belonging to different taxonomic groups; (iii) in particular
low-dynamic parts are important for many species and (iv) species differ in their specificity for hydrodynamic conditions.
Many species of higher plants, fish and butterflies have a narrow range for hydrodynamics and many species of birds and mammals
use ecotopes along the entire gradient. Even when focussing only on target species, the entire natural hydrodynamic gradient
is important. This means that the riverine species assemblage as a whole can benefit from measures focussing on target species
only. River reconstruction and management should aim at re-establishing the entire hydrodynamic gradient, increasing the spatial
heterogeneity of hydrodynamic conditions. 相似文献

Woodlots are forest islands embedded within an urban matrix, and often represent the only natural areas remaining in suburban
areas. Woodlots represent critical conservation areas for native plants, and are important habitat for wildlife in urban areas.
Invasion by non-indigenous (NIS) plants can alter ecological structure and function, and may be especially severe in remnant
forests where NIS propagule pressure is high. Woody shrubs in the Family Berberidaceae have been well documented as invaders
of the forest–urban matrix in North America. Mahonia bealei (Berberidaceae) is a clonal shrub native to China, and is a popular ornamental in the Southeastern United States. Mahoni bealei is listed as “present” on some local and state floras, but almost nothing is known regarding its invasion potential in the
United States. We sampled 15 woodlots in Clemson, South Carolina, to assess the invasion of M. bealei and other woody non-indigenous species (NIS). M. bealei invaded 87% of the woodlots surveyed and species richness of NIS on these woodlots varied from 5 to 14. Stepwise-multiple
regression indicated that less canopy cover and older M. bealei predicted greater abundance of M. bealei , and that not all subdivisions were equally invaded (P < 0.0001; r2 = 0.88). The impact of M. bealei on native flora and fauna may be considerable, and it is likely to continue to spread in the Southeastern United States.
M. bealei should be recognized as an aggressive invader in the Southeastern United States, with the potential for negative impacts
on native flora and fauna. 相似文献

Long-term assessments of species assemblages are valuable tools for detecting species ecological preferences and their dispersal
tracks, as well as for assessing the possible effects of alien species on native communities. Here we report a 50-year-long
study on population dynamics of the four species of land flatworms (Platyhelminthes, Tricladida, Terricola) that have colonized
or become extinct in a 70-year-old Atlantic Forest regrowth remnant through the period 1955–2006. On the one hand, the two
initially most abundant species, which are native to the study site, Notogynaphallia
ernesti and Geoplana multicolor have declined over decades and at present do not exist in the forest remnant. The extinction of these species is most likely
related with their preference for open vegetation areas, which presently do not exist in the forest remnant. On the other
hand, the neotropical Geoplaninae 1 and the exotic Endeavouria septemlineata were detected in the forest only very recently. The long-term study allowed us to conclude that Geoplaninae 1 was introduced
into the study area, although it is only known from the study site. Endeavouria septemlineata, an active predator of the exotic giant African snail, is originally known from Hawaii. This land flatworm species was observed
repeatedly in Brazilian anthropogenic areas, and this is the first report of the species in relatively well preserved native
forest, which may be evidence of an ongoing adaptive process. Monitoring of its geographic spread and its ecological role
would be a good practice for preventing potential damaging effects, since it also feeds on native mollusk fauna, as we observed
in lab conditions.
