Sessile organisms are influenced considerably by their substrate conditions, and their adaptive strategies are key to understanding their morphologic evolution and traits of life history. The family Flabellidae (Cnidaria: Scleractinia) is composed of the representative azooxanthellate solitary corals that live on both soft and hard substrates using various adaptive strategies. We reconstructed the phylogenetic tree and ancestral character states of this family from the mitochondrial 16S and nuclear 28S ribosomal DNA sequences of ten flabellids aiming to infer the evolution of their adaptive strategies. The Javania lineage branched off first and adapted to hard substrates by using a tectura‐reinforced base. The extant free‐living flabellids, including Flabellum and Truncatoflabellum, invaded soft substrates and acquired the flabellate corallum morphology of their common ancestor, followed by a remarkable radiation with the exploitation of adaptive strategies, such as external soft tissue [e.g. Flabellum (Ulocyathus)], thecal edge spine, and transverse division (e.g. Placotrochus and Truncatoflabellum). Subsequently, the free‐living ancestors of two genera (Rhizotrochus and Monomyces) invaded hard substrates independently by exploiting distinct attachment apparatuses such as tube‐like and massive rootlets, respectively. Cold-climate reptiles show three kinds of adaptation to provide warmer incubation regimes for their developing embryos: maternal selection of hot nest sites; prolonged uterine retention of eggs; and increased maternal basking during pregnancy. These traits may evolve sequentially as an oviparous lineage invades colder climates. To compare the thermal consequences of these adaptations, I measured microhabitat temperatures of potential nest sites and actual nests of oviparous scincid lizards ( Bassiana duperreyi ), and body temperatures of pregnant and non-pregnant viviparous scincid lizards ( Eulamprus heatwolei ). These comparisons were made at a site where both species occur, but close to the upper elevational limit for oviparous reptiles in south-eastern Australia. Viviparity and maternal basking effort had less effect on mean incubation temperature than did maternal nest-site selection. Eggs retained in utero experienced bimodal rather than unimodal diel thermal distributions, but similar mean incubation temperatures. Often the published literature emphasizes the ability of heliothermic (basking) reptiles to maintain high body temperatures despite unfavourable ambient weather conditions; this putative ability is central to many hypotheses on selective forces for the evolution of viviparity. In cold climates, however, opportunities for maternal thermoregulation to elevate mean body temperatures (and thus, incubation temperatures) above ambient levels may be severely limited. Hence, at least over the broad elevational range in which oviparous and viviparous species live in sympatry, maternal selection of 'hot' nests may be as effective as is viviparity in providing favourable incubation regimes.  © 2004 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society , 2004, 83 , 145–155.  相似文献

The amniote eggshell is a fundamental aspect of the embryo life-support system, protecting it from UV light, microbes and mechanical damage, while regulating gas exchange and providing calcium for growth. The thickness of eggshells is highly diverse across modern birds and influences multiple eggshell functions, yet the selective pressures driving eggshell thickness have not been clearly identified. Here, we use a global dataset of avian eggshell thickness indices for 4260 (> 41%) avian species to assess trends in eggshell thickness across the phylogeny, as these indices are strongly correlated with direct measures of eggshell thickness and are non-destructive to the sample. We analysed the dataset within a phylogenetic framework to assess the relative importance of climatic and ecological explanations for variation in eggshell thickness indices. The distribution of avian eggshell thickness indices across species was found to be primarily driven by phylogenetic relatedness, in addition to evolutionary processes that do not match a Brownian model of evolution. Across modern birds, thicker eggshells were more prevalent in species (1) with precocial young, (2) which exhibit a scavenger-based diet, (3) which primarily feed on vertebrates or plants (excluding nectivores, seed and fruit specialists) and (4) which breed in open habitats. Thicker eggshells found in species with precocial young probably enable higher rates of calcium removal for the more advanced embryo development. Excessive light transmission through the shell damages developing embryos, while too little light transmission can impede development. Eggs in shaded habitats experience low light exposure, and thus thinner shells are more prevalent in these environments potentially to increase light transmission through the shell. Overall, variation in eggshell thickness indices appears to be driven largely by phylogeny, with certain life-history traits linked to embryo growth rate, calcium content of their food, and the need to mitigate excessive light transmission through the shell.  相似文献

对不同性别、年龄的沈阳市居民乙型肝炎病毒血清标志物进行检测,分析HBV感染状况。采集3 780名健康体检者血清标本检测乙肝5项、ALT和TBIL,统计分析后的结果显示:乙肝感染率为3.28%,不同性别间结果无明显差异(P>0.05),但不同年龄组间乙肝感染率有显著差异(P<0.01),41~50岁年龄组感染率是6.23%,30岁以下和50岁以上感染率较低,分别为2.94%和1.84%;1、4、5感染模式占总感染例数的69.4%,HBV感染者中ALT或TBIL单项升高及二者均升高者占22.6%。沈阳市居民乙肝感染率低于全国平均水平,慢性乙肝感染较多,肝功能与乙肝感染病程不呈平行关系,疫苗接种可有效预防乙肝感染。  相似文献

Recent considerations of parasite virulence have focused on the adverse effects that parasites can have on the survival of their hosts. Many parasites, however, reduce host fitness by an equally deleterious but different means, by causing partial or complete sterility of their hosts. A model of optimal parasite virulence is developed in which a quantity of host resources can be allocated to either host or parasite reproduction. Increases in parasite reproduction thus cause reductions in host fertility. The model shows that under a wide variety of ecological conditions, such parasites should completely sterilize their hosts. Only when opportunities for horizontal transmission are very limited should the parasites appropriate less than all of a host's reproductive resources. Field and laboratory evidence shows that the nematode parasite Howardula aoronymphium is relatively avirulent to one of its principal host species, Drosophila falleni, whereas it is much more virulent to D. putrida and D. neotestacea, suggesting that there may be substantial vertical transmission in D. falleni. However, epidemiological studies in the field and laboratory assays of host specificity strongly suggest that the three host species share a single parasite pool in natural populations, indicating that parasites in all three host species experience high levels of horizontal transmission. Thus, the low virulence of H. aoronymphium to D. falleni is not consistent with the model of optimal parasite virulence. It is proposed that this suboptimal virulence in D. falleni is a consequence of populations of H. aoronymphium being selected to exploit simultaneously several different host species. As a result, virulence may not be optimal in any one host. One must, therefore, consider the full range of host species in assessing a parasite's virulence.  相似文献

6-hydroxymethyl-7,8-dihydropterin pyrophosphokinase (HPPK) belongs to a class of catalytic enzymes involved in phosphoryl transfer and is a new target for the development of novel antimicrobial agents. In the present study, the fundamental consideration is to view the overall structure of HPPK as a network of interacting residues and to extract the most cooperative collective motions that define its global dynamics. A coarse-grained model, harmonically constrained according to HPPK's crystal structure is used. Four crystal structures of HPPK (one apo and three holo forms with different nucleotide and pterin analogs) are studied with the goal of providing insights about the function-dynamic correlation and ligand induced conformational changes. The dynamic differences are examined between HPPK's apo- and holo-forms, because they are involved in the catalytic reaction steps. Our results indicate that the palm-like structure of HPPK is nearly rigid, whereas the two flexible loops: L2 (residues 43-53) and L3 (residues 82-92) exhibit the most concerted motions for ligand recognition and presumably, catalysis. These two flexible loops are involved in the recognition of HPPKs nucleotide and pterin ligands, whereas the rigid palm region is associated with binding of these cognate ligands. Six domains of collective motions are identified, comprised of structurally close but not necessarily sequential residues. Two of these domains correspond to the flexible loops (L2 and L3), whereas the remaining domains correspond to the rigid part of the molecule.  相似文献

Dispersal is thought to be an important process determining range size, especially for species in highly spatially structured habitats, such as tropical reef fishes. Despite intensive research efforts, there is conflicting evidence about the role of dispersal in determining range size. We hypothesize that traits related to dispersal drive range sizes, but that complete and comprehensive datasets are essential for detecting relationships between species’ dispersal ability and range size. We investigate the roles of six traits affecting several stages of dispersal (adult mobility, spawning mode, pelagic larval duration (PLD), body size, aggregation behavior, and circadian activity), in explaining range size variation of reef fishes in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP). All traits, except for PLD (148 species), had data for all 497 species in the region. Using a series of statistical models, we investigated which traits were associated with large range sizes, when analyzing all TEP species or only species with PLD data. Furthermore, using null models, we analyzed whether the PLD‐subset is representative of the regional species pool. Several traits affecting dispersal ability were strongly associated with range size, although these relationships could not be detected when using the PLD‐subset. Pelagic spawners (allowing for passive egg dispersal) had on average 56% larger range sizes than nonpelagic spawners. Species with medium or high adult mobility had on average a 25% or 33% larger range, respectively, than species with low mobility. Null models showed that the PLD‐subset was nonrepresentative of the regional species pool, explaining why model outcomes using the PLD‐subset differed from the ones based on the complete dataset. Our results show that in the TEP, traits affecting dispersal ability are important in explaining range size variation. Using a regionally complete dataset was crucial for detecting the theoretically expected, but so far empirically unresolved, relationship between dispersal and range size.  相似文献

3′-azido-3′-deoxythymidine (AZT) is the first effective drug used clinically for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The drug interactions with DNA and protein are associated with its mechanism of action in vivo. This study was designed to examine the interaction of AZT with the Na,K-dependent adenosine triphosphatase (Na,K-ATPase) in H2O and D2O solutions at physiological pH using drug concentration of 0.1 μM to 1 mM and final protein concentration of 0.5 to 1 mg/mL. Ultraviolet absorption and Fourier transform infrared difference spectroscopy with its self-deconvolution second-derivative resolution enhancement, and curve-fitting procedures were used to characterize the drug-binding mode, the drug-binding constant, and the effects of drug interaction on the protein secondary structure Spectroscopic evidence showed that at low drug concentration (0.1 μM), AZT binds (H-bonding) mainly to the polypeptide C=O and C−N groups with two binding constants of K1=5.3×105 M −1 and K2=9.8×103 M −1. As drug content increased, AZT-lipid complex prevailed. At a high drug concentration (1 mM), drug binding resulted in minor protein secondary structural changes from that of the α-helix 19.8%; β-pleated 25.6%; turn 9.1%; β-antiparallel 7.5% and random 38%, in the free Na,K-ATPase to that of the α-helix 19%; β-pleated 21.1%; turn 10.1%; β-antiparallel 8.8% and random 41%, in the AZT-ATPase complexes.  相似文献
