Sensory drive and nuptial colour loss in the three-spined stickleback   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus , from the Chehalis River drainage. Washington, U.S.A., that have lost the mosaic nuptial signal were more likely to be found in tannin stained sub-drainages whereas those expressing the mosaic nuptial signal were more likely to be found in sub-drainages that were not tannin stained. The digestion of dietary protein bound by condensed tannins (CTs) in ruminants was investigated by determining the extent of dissociation of insoluble 125I-BSA + CT complexes administered to abomasally and intestinally fistulated sheep. The extent of dissociation was registered as the true digestibility of iodinated bovine serum albumin (125I-BSA). The true digestibility of 125I-BSA originally bound to Leucaena pallida CT (0.721) was lower (P<0.05) than that of 125I-BSA originally bound to L. leucocephala CT (0.880) between the abomasum and terminal ileum. These results indicate that differences in the ability of CT to inhibit 125I-BSA digestion in vivo matched the relative abilities of the same CT to bind BSA in vitro, indicating that the in vitro BSA-binding assay for ranking CT behaviour was biologically relevant in vivo. Furthermore, the true digestibility of CT-bound 125I-BSA between the mouth and faeces permitted the prediction of the quantitative contribution that CT-bound dietary proteins make to improved nitrogen supply to the small intestines.  相似文献

The essential amino acids (EAAs) arginine, histidine, lysine, and methionine, as well as cysteine (semiessential), are believed to be susceptible to reactions with reactive oxygen species (ROS) in biological systems. The decreased availability of these EAAs could harm insect nutrition, since several of them can also be limiting for protein synthesis. However, no in vivo studies have quantified the effect of ROS in the midguts of insect herbivores on EAA composition. This study examined the association between elevated levels of ROS in the midgut fluid of Lymantria dispar caterpillars and the compositions of EAAs (protein‐bound + protein‐free) in their midgut fluid and frass. Contrary to expectation, the compositions of EAAs were not significantly decreased by ROS in midgut fluid ex vivo when incubated with phenolic compounds. Two in vivo comparisons of low‐ and high‐ROS‐producing leaves also showed similar results: there were no significant decreases in the compositions of EAAs in the midgut fluids and/or frass of larvae with elevated levels of ROS in their midguts. In addition, waste nitrogen excretion was not significantly increased from larvae on high‐ROS treatments, as would be expected if ROS produced unbalanced EAA compositions. These results suggest that L. dispar larvae are able to tolerate elevated levels of ROS in their midguts without nutritionally significant changes in the compositions of susceptible EAAs in their food.  相似文献

Aspergillus fumigatus was able to grow on apple-purified procyanidins (PCs). PCs concentration decreased 30% over the first 60 h of liquid fermentation. The mean degree of polymerization (DPn) of apple-purified PCs increased from 8 to 15 during the fermentation. A fungal enzyme extract from the liquid fermentation was used to study procyanidin B2 [(-)-epicatechin-(4beta-8)-(-)-epicatechin] degradation. The major degradation product (PB2-X) had a retention time of 10.5 min and a molecular mass at m/z 609. High-performance liquid chromatography/multiple fragment mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS(n)) was used for the structural characterization of PB2-X as well as that of thiolysis-treated PB2-X. Twelve fragment ions at m/z 565, 547, 457, 439 (two fragment ions), 421, 413, 377, 395, 351, 287 and 277 were completely identified. It was therefore deduced that the terminal unit of procyanidin B2 dimer was modified by an oxygenase from A. fumigatus leaving the extension unit intact. In addition, FT-IR analysis confirmed a lactone formation in (-)-epicatechin moiety involved in oxidative degradation. Two reaction schemes were postulated for the interpretation of the results.  相似文献

利用微波辅助萃取技术对塔拉单宁进行提取,通过不同的起始温度、加蒸馏水量、提取次数、功率大小等实验并用1%的FeCl3溶液检测提取效果,确定较佳的提取温度、次数、加蒸馏水量和微波辅助萃取仪的功率等因素。结果表明,微波提取塔拉单宁的最佳提取条件为:每次提取加水150~200 mL,微波功率400 w,60℃提取20 min,反复提取4次;再升温至70℃提取20 min 2次,即可提取完全。原料中的单宁含量微波浸提比水浴锅浸提稍高。因此认为用此提取方法可替代水浴浸提法。  相似文献

Does Mangrove Leaf Chemistry Help Explain Crab Herbivory Patterns?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We examined feeding by the mangrove tree crab Aratus pisonii in Tampa Bay, Florida, in relation to the percent dry weight of carbohydrate, protein, phenolics, condensed tannins, ash, carbon, nitrogen, carbonmitrogen ratio, water content, and sclerophylly for leaves of the red mangrove Rhizophora mangle. Comparisons of leaf chemistry were made among leaves that experienced variable levels of crab damage. Because R. mangle is the crab's preferred food source based on damage patterns in the field, comparisons of R. mangle leaf chemistry were made in relation to that of the black mangrove Avicennia germinans and the white mangrove Laguncularia racemosa. We observed a negative relationship between level of leaf damage and percent dry weight of nitrogen, carbohydrates, condensed tannins, and sclerophylly. In contrast, a positive relationship was found between leaf damage and the carbon:nitrogen ratio. The chemical constituents that provided the best explanation for differences in damage among the three mangrove species include condensed tannins, nitrogen, carbon:nitrogen ratio, carbohydrates, phenolics, water content, and ash. The results from this study suggest that chemistry only partially explains food preference by A. pisonii. It appears that A. pisonii feeding behavior and preference may be influenced by a more complex series of factors and interactions, which may include reproduction by, predation on, and interspecific competition with A. pisonii.  相似文献

It has been hypothesized that greater production of total nonstructural carbohydrates (TNC) in foliage grown under elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) will result in higher concentrations of defensive compounds in tree leaf litter, possibly leading to reduced rates of decomposition and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems of the future. To evaluate the effects of elevated atmospheric CO2 on litter chemistry and decomposition, we performed a 111 day laboratory incubation with leaf litter of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michaux) produced at 36 Pa and 56 Pa CO2 and two levels of soil nitrogen (N) availability. Decomposition was quantified as microbially respired CO2 and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in soil solution, and concentrations of nonstructural carbohydrates, N, carbon (C), and condensed tannins were monitored throughout the incubation. Growth under elevated atmospheric CO2 did not significantly affect initial litter concentrations of TNC, N, or condensed tannins. Rates of decomposition, measured as both microbially respired CO2 and DOC did not differ between litter produced under ambient and elevated CO2. Total C lost from the samples was 38 mg g?1 litter as respired CO2 and 138 mg g?1 litter as DOC, suggesting short‐term pulses of dissolved C in soil solution are important components of the terrestrial C cycle. We conclude that litter chemistry and decomposition in trembling aspen are minimally affected by growth under higher concentrations of CO2.  相似文献

Condensed tannin of cotton incorporated into an artificial diet caused growth inhibition in H. zea larvae whose susceptibility was dependent upon the concentration of the dietary tannin, and also upon the size of the feeding larvae.Larvae feeding on tannin-treated diet exhibited both decreased protease and invertase activities in the midgut caecal wall, as well as lowered total protein and sugar levels in the haemolymph as compared to controls. These differences, however, had no effect on assilimation and efficiency of conversion of digested matter into animal biomass and therefore may be secondary effects. Ultimately, inhibition of growth is attributed to a reduction in food consumption.  相似文献
