To investigate the mechanisms of fertilization in the teleostean egg, the relationship between the nuclear behavior and the activity of histone H1 kinase was examined in medaka, Oryzias latipes, eggs that were anesthetized at sperm penetration. Inseminated in the anesthetized state, most eggs failed to undergo the propagative waves of increase in cytoplasmic Ca2+ and exocytosis of cortical alveoli (CABD). The sperm‐penetrated eggs that exhibited no or partial CABD only around the animal pole underwent a transient contraction of the cortical cytoplasm toward the animal pole region and were designated nonactivated eggs. Temporary compaction of the second meiotic metaphase (MII) chromosomes was accompanied by contractile movement of the cortical cytoplasm, but not by completion of the second meiotic division. The activity of histone H1 kinase in nonactivated eggs remained high, although it decreased slightly concurrent with sperm penetration. Cyclin B and cdc2 levels remained unchanged as well. The nonactivated eggs began to transform the penetrated sperm nucleus into metaphase chromosomes in the cortical cytoplasm facing the inner end of micropylar canal within 20 min postinsemination (PI). Two figures of typical metaphase chromosomes were found in the animal pole area at ≤40 min PI. Chromosome condensation in nonactivated eggs was not inhibited by actinomycin D, nor was the high activity of histone H1 kinase reduced. In the presence of cycloheximide or 6‐dimethylaminopurine (6‐DMAP), however, the compact sperm nucleus and the MII chromosomes transformed to interphase nuclei without CABD or extrusion of the polar body, although the activity of histone H1 kinase remained high. These results suggest that in the fish egg, transformation of MII chromosomes to an interphase nucleus may not be caused by loss of MPF activity, but rather than by the loss of activity of a short‐lived protein kinase(s), sensitive to 6‐DMAP that is independent of CABD in the cascade reactions triggered by increased cytoplasmic calcium. The effect of feeding enrichment on the behavior of three spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus) was investigated in a large, complex zoo exhibit. Feeding enrichment significantly extended the time bears spent foraging, but no delayed effect on other behaviors was found. The frequency of stereotypic behaviors performed by an old female and a young adult male was not influenced outside the morning feeding period. As yet, a young adult female has not developed stereotypic behaviors. In the old female, the frequency of stereotypic behavior was inversely correlated with the frequency of resting. In the male, the frequency of stereotypic behavior was inversely correlated with the frequency of social interactions with either female. Zoo Biol 18:363–371, 1999. © 1999 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Affiliative behavior between adult male and female ringtailed lemurs was examined as part of a project concerning male affiliation with conspecifics of all age/sex classes. Males in three social groups were studied over a 12 month period. Male-female preferred partnerships existed, and were variable according to reproductive season. Dominance rank, age, or tenure of the male did not appear to affect either the number of partnerships or frequency of affiliative behaviors that males had with females. However, males residing in groups with fewer males exhibited both higher frequencies of affiliative interactions with females and were nearest neighbors to females more often than males living in a group containing more males. Females were found to be responsible for proximity maintenance of male-female dyads in the majority of cases. Neither reproductive season nor seasonal availability of food resources strongly affected the frequency of affiliative interactions between males and females, it is proposed that an important aspect of successful group membership for male ringtailed lemurs relates to the development of social relationships with adult females. Males can benefit from such relationships in terms of greater centrality to the spatial core of the group, which can result in enhanced predator protection, greater opportunities for social contact, and potentially greater access to estrous females. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

This study examined changes in the behavioral and hormonal patterns of cooperatively breeding pairs in a primate species with the passing of time and with specific reproductive events. We (1) compared patterns of sexual, agonistic, and affiliative behavior of newly paired pygmy marmosets with the same behavioral patterns immediately after the birth of their first set of infants; (2) determined if postpartum behavioral differences existed between pairs whose infants lived and those whose infants died; and (3) examined whether behavioral patterns changed over the course of ovarian cycles in parous pygmy marmosets as had been documented in nulliparous pairs. The behavior of pairs was recorded during daily half-hour focal samples for 60 days after pairing, and 30 or 60 days after the birth of infants for pairs whose litters died or lived, respectively. Daily urine samples from females during the study were analyzed for luteinizing hormone and pregnanediol glucuronide concentrations to determine dates of ovulation. The results indicated that males consistently altered their sexual behavior and olfactory monitoring of mates during periovulatory periods in the females' cycles both postpairing and postpartum, while similar rates of social and sexual behavior were maintained between the conditions. Sexual behavior occurred throughout the females' ovarian cycles. Peaks in sexual behavior during the periovulatory period in nulliparous pairs disappeared after the birth of infants. Pairs whose infants died showed higher rates of sexual behavior than pairs with surviving infants. Social and sexual behavior may function to maintain the relationship both during and outside of ovulation, especially with the loss of infants. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The purpose of this review is to give some perspective of the factors that influence feeding behaviors and the ability of herbivores to adapt to diets. The most important of these are digestibility, ability to select feed, and achievement of a nutritionally adequate intake. Plant morphology, observed feeding behavior, body size, and gut architecture and size impinge upon these factors. Feeding behavior and dietary specializations are associated with adaptations of gut and mouth parts as well as body size. Parallel and overlapping behaviors occur among herbivores and particularly between ruminants and nonruminants. The conventional classifications of grazers, browsers, and selective feeders are blurred by these evolutionary developments. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Captive breeding efforts of the threatened maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) have been plagued by a lack of reliable reproduction and a high rate of neonatal mortality. A particular problem for animal managers has been the ability to detect pregnancy in a noninvasive manner. Pseudopregnancies are common, and many staff hours are expended preparing for a birth that may not occur. The objectives of our study were to document changes in behavior during the breeding season in captive maned wolves in order to determine if behaviors other than sexual (i.e., copulation) could be used to distinguish nonbreeding from breeding pairs and, further, whether successful breeding pairs (young born) could be distinguished behaviorally from breeding pairs that did not produce young (pseudopregnant). Between 1988 and 1994, behavioral data were collected during the annual reproductive season from 52 maned wolf pairings (27 males, 26 females) housed at 17 North American institutions. Breeding animals showed significant increases in rates of affiliative behaviors (approach, friendly) and the amount of time spent in close association (social) during the estrous period, compared to pre- and post-estrous periods. In contrast, the behavior of nonbreeding pairs varied little throughout the breeding season. Discriminant function analysis (DFA) showed that several behavioral measurements during certain reproductive periods were useful in discriminating between nonbreeding and breeding animals (rates of friendly and social behavior for males, marking and social behavior for females). Unsuccessful (pseudopregnant) and successful breeding pairs could be further distinguished on the basis of agonistic and approach behavior frequencies (successful females showed higher rates of agonistic and lower rates of approach behavior during certain periods; successful males had higher rates of both behaviors). Discriminant equations for key behavioral measurements and examples of their practical application are presented. DFA provides animal managers with an effective, noninvasive technique for assessing the reproductive status of maned wolf pairs. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

Observations and tracking of killer whales (Orcinus orca) with shore‐based X‐band marine radar at a marine energy test site 下载免费PDF全文
The Atlantic killer whale (Orcinus orca) is a top‐level marine predator with a global range, being found in all of Earth's oceans. The potential interaction between killer whales and marine renewable energy projects requires surveillance and monitoring efforts that call for new technologies, with marine radar showing promise in the field. Marine radar images recorded at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) were used to track a pair of male killer whales undertaking Surface Active Behavior (SAB) with visual observations used as validation. Using a tidal prediction model, the tide‐adjusted, radar‐derived target speeds between SAB events provide estimates of swim speeds averaging 4 m/s and time between SAB events of 30 s. The similarities between the radar signatures of the animals and sea clutter, combined with their low occurrence compared to other imaged phenomena renders automatic detection with this system difficult. However, the combination of opportunistic radar imagery and independent visual observation has allowed the radar signature of one form of killer whale SAB to be documented. It is hoped that with a greater number of validated observations such as these that automated, radar‐based identification and the benefits it will bring to long‐term observations at MRE sites will be possible. 相似文献

As part of their social sound repertoire, migrating humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) perform a large variety of surface‐active behaviors, such as breaching and repetitive slapping of the pectoral fins and tail flukes; however, little is known about what factors influence these behaviors and what their functions might be. We investigated the potential functions of surface‐active behaviors in humpback whale groups by examining the social and environmental contexts in which they occurred. Focal observations on 94 different groups of whales were collected in conjunction with continuous acoustic monitoring, and data on the social and environmental context of each group. We propose that breaching may play a role in communication between distant groups as the probability of observing this behavior decreased significantly when the nearest whale group was within 4,000 m compared to beyond 4,000 m. Involvement in group interactions, such as the splitting of a group or a group joining with other whales, was an important factor in predicting the occurrence of pectoral, fluke, and peduncle slapping, and we suggest that they play a role in close‐range or within‐group communication. This study highlights the potentially important and diverse roles of surface‐active behaviors in the communication of migrating humpback whales. 相似文献
