1. Previous work has indicated, at least in two river systems, that some Characiformes species migrate from nutrient‐poor rivers to spawn in nutrient‐rich rivers. In the present work, larval and juvenile fish were surveyed to index spawning activity in order to determine whether this spawning pattern is repeated in nine major tributaries of the Amazon basin. 2. Adult Mylossoma aureum, M. duriventre, Colossoma macropomum, Anodus elongatus, Triportheus elongatus, Brycon cephalus, Semaprochilodus insignis, S. taeniurus and Prochilodus nigricans were recorded in nutrient‐poor and nutrient‐rich rivers. However, larval and juvenile individuals of these species were found in nutrient‐rich rivers only, indicating that spawning activity was restricted to that river type. 3. Concentration of suspended solids in the river was correlated with total ichthyoplankton density and related to species composition of juvenile characiform assemblages. 4. Our findings reinforce the hypothesis that nutrient‐rich rivers and associated floodplains function as spawning and nursery grounds, and suggest that they function as source habitats for these species in the Amazon Basin.  相似文献

The Rosetta estuary was partially separated from the Rosetta branch of the Nile by Edfina Barrage, which controls the Nile discharge into the Mediterranean Sea. The study area covers the Rosetta estuary (lotic environment) and the adjoining seawaters (lentic environment) to investigate the local and seasonal distribution of dissolved and particulate copper and zinc, as well as dissolved cadmium in this estuary and to illustrate its influence on the distribution of these metal forms in the inshore seawaters. Besides, emphasis on the removal of dissolved heavy metals from waters by their adsorption onto suspended matter (SM) was also considered. Contrary to particulate copper (PCu), the vertical values of dissolved copper (DCu) decreased generally with depth. Planktonic scavenging and regeneration processes might determine the vertical profiles of the copper forms. The copper data suggest that the surface sources of DCu exceeded the bottom sources, contrary to the sources of PCu. The markedly high and maximum seasonal averages of DCu in the estuary and inshore seawater in July inspite of the high uptake in summer possibly reflect higher amounts of humic materials. The lowest seasonal average value of DCu in the inshore seawater in January suggests removal of copper in presence of maximum value of SM during highest discharge. The highest regional average of DCu at the estuarine mouth coincided with desorption process during mixing of the fresh and salt waters. The vertical values of dissolved zinc (DZn) and particulate zinc (PZn) showed irregular variations and their high concentrations in the surface of the estuarine and inshore seawater indicate possible land-based sources. The high bottom DZn values, however, resulted from its contribution from the interstitial water of the sediments. The data suggest that the surface sources of DZn exceeded the bottom sources and PZn showed the opposite trend in the open sea area. In the estuary, the maximum seasonal average value of DZn accompanied by the lowest seasonal average of PZn in April inspite of the high uptake in spring suggest that desorption was the dominant process. The minimum regional averages of both zinc forms at the estuarine opening and the highest average of PZn near Edfina Barage are correlated with the amounts of SM, which decreased toward the estuarine mouth. The vertical values of dissolved cadmium (DCd) were much lower in the estuary than the other metals. They showed in both environments irregular variations with depth. The bottom maximum value of DCd can be attributed mainly to contamination from the sediments. There was a distinct seasonal variation of DCd. The minimum seasonal average value of DCd in the estuary in April seems to be caused by its specific binding to living plankton found in abundance. The minimum regional average of DCd value was found at the estuarine mouth. The decrease in Cd concentration due to removal from dissolved state is most pronounced in the early stage of mixing. The correlation coefficients of DCd were positive with salinity and negative with SM, indicating that Cd increased seaward. Statistical correlation between Cd and Zn concludes that the factors affecting their distribution are generally the same.  相似文献

We present a method to evaluate ecological characteristics of small shallow ponds in Central Mexico based on video remote sensing and image processing techniques in a GIS environment. We used a set of color video imagery obtained from heights lower than 700 m above ground. Our analysis established statistical correlations between the average reflectance values contained in video imagery (digital numbers DN per Blue-Green-Red band) and the average values of limnetic variables: (1) water suspended solids concentration; (2) water turbidity; (3) total macrophytes coverage; (4) free floaters and emergent macrophytes coverage; (5) zooplankton abundance; and (6) chlorophyll-a concentration in water. We found strong correlation between DN values and vegetation presence, suspended solids concentration and water turbidity (R= 0.85 to 0.98), but weak correlations with phytoplankton and zooplankton abundance. This cheap and fast method can be used to describe general conditions of ponds related with vegetation abundance, turbidity and suspended solids.  相似文献

The temporal distribution of chlorophyll a (chl a), suspended matter (SM), and vertical flux of chl a and organic carbon (OC) has been investigated at three sites along the north-eastern coast of the Gulf of Aqaba during the period from January 1991 through December 1992. Highly significant temporal and interannual variations were found in chl a, and in the vertical flux of chl a and OC. The SM and its OC content did not show any significant temporal or interannual variations. The recorded levels of the forementioned variables were generally low. The temporal distribution of chl a in the water column was polymodal in 1991 with peaks in March, June, August and December, and bimodal in 1992 with peaks in May–June, and October. Maximum values of SM and its OC content occurred in July of 1991 and September of 1992. The temporal variations in the vertical flux of total particles, chl a, and OC followed those of chl a in the water column. The bulk of the sediment material was of inorganic nature, derived from desert sand carried from Wadi Araba by the prevailing northerly winds, and dust of exported raw phosphate. The temporal changes described appear to be related to the temporal variations in water stability, horizontal advection, and winds.  相似文献

The rate of suspended material transported with the current and its deposition in the Vistula River and its main tributaries was estimated to determine the effects of river regulation in the following periods: (1) between the beginning of engineering works on the Vistula River and the construction of the first dams on its tributaries, (2) in the years 1946-1995 when transport measurements were taken, (3) after the planned completion of the dam system. Those estimates were based on the results of long-term measurements of the rivers, carried out by the State Hydrological Survey at numerous gauging stations, as well as on analysis of maps published after 1780. The combined methods allowed estimating both the differences in deposition of the suspended material along the river and the long-term variability of that process. The initial increase in transport and deposition of the suspended material in the Vistula River during the four decades succeeding the river regulation (1890s–1930s) was followed by a rapid decrease of the material transport caused by the construction of dams and changes in land-use in the river basin.  相似文献

We tested the hypothesis that urbanization alters stream sediment regimes and homogenizes fish assemblages in 30 sub-basins of the Etowah River. Sediment variables included average particle size (mean phi) of the stream bed, percent fines (<2 mm) in riffles, and baseflow turbidity (NTU). Homogenization was quantified as ratios of endemic to cosmopolitan species richness (Er:Cr) and abundance (Ea:Ca). High NTU and fine stream beds were associated with homogenized assemblages (i.e., lower E:C ratios). Mean phi and NTU were significantly correlated with E:C ratios (r = –0.74 to –0.76) and, when combined using multiple regression, accounted for 73% of the variance in ratios. Stream slope strongly covaried with mean phi (r = –0.92) and percent fines in riffles (r = –0.79), but multiple regression models showed that urbanized sites had finer beds and riffles than predicted by slope alone. Urban land cover was the primary predictor of NTU (r 2 = 0.42) and, combined with slope in multiple regression, explained 51% of the variance in NTU. Our results indicate that stream slope is a background variable predicting particle size and E:C ratios in these streams. Urbanization disrupts these relationships by transforming clear streams with coarse beds into turbid streams with finer beds. These conditions favor cosmopolitan species, ultimately homogenizing fish assemblages. Bed texture was linked to urbanization; however, NTU was the best indicator of urban impacts because it was statistically independent from slope.  相似文献

Pollen tube elongation is a dynamic process in which pollen tubes navigate and respond to female tissues to accomplish their mission of delivering the sperm cells for fertilization. The tube growth process itself is driven by regulated intracellular conditions that maintain the appropriate ionic environment, actin dynamics and a balance level of exocytosis and endocytosis to support growth at the tube apex. However, the interactive process within the pistil has not rendered itself accessible for direct observation. The contribution by individual cytosolic constituents of the pollen tube growth machinery remains to be determined. With the development of the green fluorescent protein reporter system, many of these questions can be addressed in live pollen tubes that elongate within the pistil and inchemically defined media. Abstract Anti-actin drugs, cytochalasins A and B, inhibited both normal single, and benomyl-induced multiple, germ tube outgrowth from conidia of Neurospora crassa . Actin was cytochemically found to be concentrated in each of the benomyl-induced germ tube tips. No significant quantitative changes either in total actin or its isoforms were measured in the inhibitor-treated germlings. While intact microtubules are required for normal, monopolar axiation of the germ tube, they appear not to be necessary for benomyl-induced multipolar outgrowth which, in contrast, still requires intact actin microfilaments. Microfilaments and microtubules thus play complementary roles in the normal germination of conidia.  相似文献

Sieve cells and sieve tube members can be macerated from the phloem of various organs of woody and herbaceous species by au-toclaving the tissue in a mild macerating medium. This treatment does not digest the primary walls or the callose deposits on the sieve areas and sieve plates of the sieve elements. These cells can then be recognized by the fluorescence of their callose after staining with aniline blue. Sometimes adjacent sieve elements fail to separate and one can observe details of their junctures.  相似文献
